Dominion Trivia Questions

1. The Prosperity expansion introduces a new Victory card worth ten victory points, what is it called?

From Quiz
Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Colony

The Prosperity expansion pack contains twenty five new Kingdom cards and two new Supply cards, Platinum and Colony. Platinum is a Treasure that costs nine Coins to buy and is worth five Coins in the game. Colony is a new Victory card that is worth ten victory points and costs eleven Coins to buy. In a game using Colonies the game ends when either the Colony or the Province pile is empty or when three other Supply piles are empty.

2. The "Smithy" card costs 4 coins and only provides one effect... what is it?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: +3 cards

By allowing the player to draw 3 extra cards, from their deck, the "Smithy" card allows them to try to increase their coin pool for the 'buy phase' of their turn.

3. Which cards do you ultimately want to get the most of in the game "Dominion", and what do they represent?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Victory cards; land

Victory cards are cards with a certain value of Victory points, and can be bought with money. The three basic groups of Victory cards are Estates, which are worth one victory point, Duchies, worth three Victory points, and Provinces, valued at six Victory points. In the base game without any extension packs, "Dominion" contains 24 Estate cards, 12 Duchies, and 12 Provinces. The game also comes with 12 Victory cards called "Gardens" that also award points, but are not found in every game. The goal of the game is to amass the most victory points, and Victory cards are the only way to do so. The game will end when all of the Province cards have been bought. However, Victory cards are only useful for the final count; when drawn as part of the hand, they do nothing but take up space, unless the player finds their presence in the deck gratifying and psychologically relaxing.

4. Which expansion released in October 2009 introduced Duration cards for the first time?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Seaside

The Seaside expansion includes twenty six new Kingdom cards some of which are Duration cards. Duration cards are a type of card that stay in play for a specified number of turns meaning they are not removed in Clean-up. The Duration cards in Seaside have an instruction for when the card is initially played and further instructions for subsequent turns that the card remains in play.

5. What distinctive feature of some card games was pioneered by "Dominion", earning it the nickname of a "deck-builder" game?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Used cards are kept for the player's reuse, instead of being turned in

"Dominion" was the first game to allow the players to reuse their own cards instead of turning them in once used. Other deck building games followed, such as some of the Ascension, Nightfall, Puzzle Strike, and Resident Evil card game series. In "Dominion", each player is dealt a certain number of cards at the beginning which are placed in the player's personal Deck. Once a player finishes with a hand, the cards, used, just bought, and otherwise, are placed in the Discard pile. The player draws more cards from the Deck. Once the player's Deck is used up, the discarded cards are reshuffled into a new Deck. Thus, as the game progresses and cards are bought, but the currency not turned in, the player's deck keeps growing bigger.

6. The Nocturne expansion adds a new phase to the gameplay which takes place after the buy phase. What is this additional phase called?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Night

The Night phase comes after the Buy phase but before the Clean-up phase of a player's turn. During the Night phase a player may play as many cards of the Night type as they wish. Night cards are a new type of Kingdom card that is introduced in the Nocturne expansion. As well as introducing the Night phase and cards Nocturne also introduces two new types of landscape card called Boons, which give players positive things, and Hexes, which have a negative effect on the player.

7. Which action card would you use if you wanted to trash up to 4 cards from your hand?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: Chapel

The "Chapel" card costs 2 coins and allows the player to trash up to 4 cards from their hand. This is an effective way to get rid of curse cards or low value treasure cards which are clogging up a deck.

8. With a hand consisting of five cards, how many cards is a player given as a starting deck?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: 10

Each player needs ten cards, five for the first hand, then to be discarded, and five for the second hand, after which all the cards, along with any purchased cards, are reshuffled and used as the new deck. In any "Dominion" game, the first ten cards are three Estate cards and seven Copper cards. Copper cards are the lowest of the currency cards and are worth one coin each. Thus, a player begins with three victory points, courtesy of the three Estate cards, and seven Copper coins, with which other cards can be bought.

9. The Dark Ages expansion includes which type of card that replace a player's starting Estate cards?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Shelters

Shelters are a new type of card found in the Dark Ages expansion pack. There are three different Shelters and each player starts with one of each of Overgrown Estate, Hovel and Necropolis. The Necropolis card gives the player +2 Actions, the Overgrown Estate is a Victory card worth zero victory points but does allow the player to draw an extra card when it is trashed while the Hovel does nothing except allow the player to trash it when they gain a Victory card. By starting with cards that 'do something' rather than Estates Shelters encourage players to alter their tactics, especially in the early rounds of the game.

10. The "Mine" card allows a player to upgrade a treasure card. By playing this card a player may trash a treasure card from their hand and gain a treasure card costing up to how much more?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: 3 coins

The "Mine" card costs 5 coins, making it an expensive purchase. Given that a "Copper" card costs nothing, a "Silver" card costs 3 coins and a "Gold" card costs 6 coins, the effect is to upgrade each treasure card by one step.

11. "Dominion" has three phases of moves the player can do in one turn. Which phase, requiring kingdom cards for completion, is the first phase?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Action phase

In the Action phase, a player is allowed to play one Action card if they have one in their hand. If not, the player skips directly to the next phase. In the first two rounds, no player has an Action card, so the Action phase is skipped. If a player has more than one card in hand, only one can be used, unless the first Action card played awards the player another action. After the player completes all that the Action card dictates or allows, the Action phase ends. Kingdom cards are a category of cards, most of which are Action cards. There are twenty-five groups, or piles, of Kingdom cards, and ten cards per group. Twenty-four of the groups consist of Action cards, the remaining "Garden" pile awards victory points. Each group has a name, price, and specific action. For example, the "Village" cards cost three coins and award one more card (so you can draw a sixth card for your hand) and two more actions. Other cards have different, set prices and combinations.

12. Alchemy, a small expansion from 2010, introduced a new type of Treasure. What was this treasure called?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Potion

Potion is a type of Treasure introduced in the Alchemy expansion, the card costs four Coins to buy and when played is worth one Potion, represented by a potion bottle symbol on relevant cards. Cards with Potion in their cost will have a Coin value (if greater than zero) shown next to a potion bottle symbol, to buy cards with Potion in the cost a player must play Treasure cards meeting the Coin amount shown and the required number of Potion cards.

13. What effects do you get if you play a "Market" action card?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: +1 Card, +1 Action, +1 Buy and + 1 coin

The "Market" card is extremely valuable as it allows a player to extend their turn and, hopefully, increase their chances of buying higher value victory cards. Many people like to play a second "Market" card as their +1 action, giving them all of these perks again!

14. Treasure cards are needed to complete the second phase, which is what phase?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Buy phase

After the Action phase comes the Buy phase, when money, consisting of Treasure cards, comes into play. In the Buy phase a player can buy any of the cards in the piles used in the game, provided that the number of coins in the player's hand cover the price of the item purchased. The reason the Buy phase comes after the Action phase is that some Actions can grant coin for the Buy phase, and purchased Actions cannot be played in that turn. There are three groups of Treasure cards, Coppers, worth one coin each, Silver cards, with a value of two coins, and Gold cards, amounting to three coins each.

15. Which expansion introduces the Debt mechanism to the game?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Empires

The Debt mechanism allows players to buy certain cards by taking Debt tokens rather than paying the cost in Coins. Cards that can be bought this way have a cost in Debt marked in a red hexagon on the card. If a player has Debt tokens they are not allowed to buy cards until they have got rid of their Debt tokens by paying one Coin per Debt token.

16. How many coins does the "Feast" card cost?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: 4 coins

The "Feast" card allows the player to trash that "feast" card and replace it with another action card costing up to 5 coins.

17. In the final phase of a turn, the player discards their hand and draws new cards, so the final phase is named what?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Clean-up phase

In the third and final phase, a player discards a hand and draws five new cards. If the Deck does not have enough cards, it is necessary to shuffle the Discard pile and make it the new Deck. A player's Clean-up phase can happen while the next player has a turn. However, if the next player uses an Action card that affects other players, Clean-up phases must be finished before the Action is resolved.

18. The Renaissance expansion introduces cards that give players Villagers. What do players get if they cash in a Villager?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: +1 Action

A number of cards in the Renaissance expansion give players a number of Villagers. When a player gains Villagers they add the required number of coin tokens to their Villagers mat. During a player's Action phase they may remove coin tokens from the Villagers mat in order to gain +1 Action per token removed.

19. The Menagerie expansion introduces a type of landscape card that gives players an alternative way to play their Action cards. What is the name given to these landscape cards?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Ways

The Menagerie expansion was released in March 2020 and introduced a new type of landscape cards called Ways. Landscape cards are so called because they are printed in a landscape orientation unlike other cards in the game that are portrait in orientation. There are twenty Ways, each named for an animal. In games with Ways players can choose when playing an Action card whether to do what is written on the Action card or to do what is written on the Way instead.

20. Which attacking action card forces each other player to reveal the top 2 cards of their deck, and then to trash any revealed treasure cards that the attacking player chooses, later allowing the attacking player to steal the trashed cards?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: Thief

Any treasure cards revealed and chosen by the attacking player are trashed if they are not stolen. All other cards are discarded.

21. Even in the base version of "Dominion" without expansion packs, the game can be played in different ways. This is done by alternating types of which cards?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Kingdom cards

Unlike Victory and Treasure cards, only ten of the 24 available Kingdom piles are used in a game. Victory and Treasure cards are somewhat of a staple in the game; the three groups of both categories always appear in a game. Combinations of Kingdom cards are not set by rules, but can be done randomly, or according to suggestions in the manual. The suggestions of gameplay done by varying the Kingdom cards are: "First Game", an introductory game with basic, building-block Action cards; "Big Money", the purpose of most of the Kingdom cards being to make you a tycoon; "Interaction", with a leaning towards Action cards that affect other players as well as you; "Size Distortion", an introduction of magic; and "Village Square", a more complex version of "First Game".

22. The Adventures expansion introduces cards of the Reserve type. These cards tell the player to put the cards on which type of mat?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Tavern Mat

Reserve cards are initially played as Action cards during the Action phase of the game and feature an instruction to the player to "put this on your Tavern mat". The cards feature additional instructions which detail when a player may call the card from the Tavern mat and what benefits (if any) they will get if they do this, for example the Ratcatcher instructs players that "at the start of your turn, you may call this, to trash a card from your hand". Once called from the Tavern mat and played, the Reserve card is discarded as normal in Clean-up.

23. What does a "Village" card do for its player?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: + 1 Card, + 2 Actions

A "Village" card costs just 3 coins and is often played along with multiple other villages to provide a player with the opportunity to play a large number of actions in one turn.

24. Which type of cards are the only cards that can be completely omitted from the game, depending on the chosen form of gameplay?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Curse cards

Curse cards are in their own category because they are not any of the other cards. They take away Victory points, so if a player holds two Curse cards, in the final count two Victory points will be subtracted. Thus, unlike other cards, it is truly a curse to be holding one. Also unlike any of the other cards, the entire category of Curse cards can be added to or taken away from the game according to player preference.

25. Dominion cards have a small icon in the bottom right to identify which set they are from. Which expansion set has a horse for its icon?

From Quiz Dominion Expansion Sets

Answer: Hinterlands

The Hinterlands expansion was released in October 2011 and adds twenty six new Kingdom cards to the game. Having an identifying icon makes it easy to tell which cards belong to which set which is helpful when you have lots of sets. The icon for Seaside is an anchor, for Renaissance a paintbrush and for Dark Ages is a double headed battle-axe.

26. The "Moneylender" states that its player must trash a "Copper" card from their hand. if they do, what do they get to use in that turn?

From Quiz Dominion - Action Cards

Answer: + 3 Coins

This card can only be used if you hold a "Copper" card. The + 3 coins are only playable in the "buy phase" of that one turn, but the trashing of the "Copper" card is permanent.

27. "Dominion" is formed with a certain theme, a theme of which historical period?

From Quiz Dominion

Answer: Middle Ages

The Middle Ages were the period in European history during which chivalry, monarchy, and social classes were the norm. "Dominion" clearly reflects this with card names such as "Smithy", "Moat", and others. Also, the introduction of the game is rife with Medieval references, saying that the player is a monarch who wishes to build a dominion with many kingdoms and fiefs.
