Fun Trivia
A social trick-taking game originally coming from Europe, Pinochle is now quite popular in the United States as well. The combination of melds (scoring hand card combinations) and trick-taking stages makes this game very variable to play. Enjoy the quizzes!

Surprisingly after perusing the card games sub-category I discovered there is no quiz dedicated to this wonderful game of cards. So, my fellow pinochle lovers, please enjoy this quiz...based on the rules and bidding for a single deck.

Recently I made a quiz for connoisseurs of the card game - pinochle. Customarily, pinochle is played with a single-deck of 48 cards. Many pinochle players prefer the double-deck variety. This quiz is for those folks, but single-deckers also please enjoy!

Pinochle Trivia Questions

1. This should be a simple one for pinochle lovers...how many cards are there in a standard pinochle deck?

From Quiz
Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: 48

A standard pinochle deck includes a total of 8 aces, 8 kings, 8 queens, 8 jacks, 8 tens and 8 nines. You can make a pinochle deck by acquiring two standard decks of playing cards and simply removing the twos through eights! Of course, the easier alternative is to simply purchase a pinochle deck...

2. In game play, which card ranks the highest in the game of pinochle?

From Quiz Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: ace

Strangely, after the ace, a ten is ranked highest...defeating a king, queen, jack and nine, respectively.

3. Since the game is called pinochle, we had better discuss what a pinochle is. What exactly is a pinochle?

From Quiz Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: Queen of spades and jack of diamonds

It is always most pleasing to find a pinochle in one's hand, but even more exciting is the double pinochle! A regular pinochle is worth a mere 40 points, but a double pinochle is worth 300!

4. Let us say that you have won the bid. You have a single run in hearts, have aces around (at least one ace in each suit) and double pinochle. How many points would this be worth as meld?

From Quiz Pinochle - Double Deck

Answer: 55

A single run would be worth 15 points, the aces 10 and the double pinochle 30, for a total of 55. Let's hope you didn't overbid!

5. What is the term for the combination of points that a player bids on following the deal and prior to game play?

From Quiz Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: meld & melding & to meld & melds

Meld is only a dirty word when you don't have any...

6. Junlin, your opponent, wins the bid by default at 50 (she is the dealer and all other players have passed). She shows a total of 10 meld, while her partner Hernando shows a total of 8 meld. What happens next?

From Quiz Pinochle - Double Deck

Answer: The hand is defaulted

Unfortunately, the hand must be defaulted and 50 points subtracted from Junlin and Hernando's score. Theoretically, it is possible that Hernando could turn the table over, but I have always felt Hernando to be a cool-headed player.

7. How many points would you receive for a double round of aces?

From Quiz Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: 1000

Only a double run (two aces, tens, kings, queens and jacks of trump) is worth more at 1500. I drool at the thought of being dealt either one!

8. Which term is used when a team fails to earn enough points to reach the bid made by the winning bidder?

From Quiz Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: set & to set & to go set & setting

There's nothing worse than the humiliation of going set, and nothing greater than the satisfaction of setting your over-zealous opponents!

9. Sometimes lower valued cards can win tricks, a particularly satisfying event for a player. What is the phrase that relates to this occurrence?

From Quiz Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: Making it walk

Once the aces have been exhausted, it's a free for all if each player has remaining cards in a suit. At that point, lowly cards (such as queens and kings) can win tricks!

10. Customarily, what does an initial bid of 51 represent?

From Quiz Pinochle - Double Deck

Answer: Aces around

You should only bid 51 if you have aces around, unless you have agreed with your partner otherwise!

11. Which term is used to describe the situation in which all players pass, in which case the dealer is forced to take the bid?

From Quiz Pinochle - Single Deck

Answer: Dumped on

It's always fun to have the bid dumped on you...well, not always...but isn't it fun when this occurs and you have a sweet little run to deal with it?
