Colors of the Garden Trivia Questions

1. Which red flower was featured on the reverse of a Canadian quarter (25 cents) in 2004?

From Quiz
In the Red: Beautiful Blooms

Answer: Poppy

The 2004 quarter was the world's first coloured coin in general circulation and the design was repeated in 2008 and 2010. Poppies are well known for their association to Flanders Field especially and WWI in general as a symbol of remembrance and it was for this reason that the Canadian coins were minted. This question bloomed in the mind of Team Red member 480154st.

2. Which strikingly red flower, endemic to Australia, is the State flower of New South Wales and the nickname of the state's Rugby Union Team?

From Quiz In the Red: Beautiful Blooms

Answer: Waratah

The Waratah is a native to the South-Eastern parts of Australia. Most well known is the Telopea speciosissima- with its bright red flower that can grow to 15cm in diameter. While many regard it as a single flower, it is actually a densely packed head of small flowers, mimicking a single large bloom. It was declared the state flower of New South Wales in 1962. This question was potted by Red Team member leith90.

3. Southern peas come in many colors, but one of the most well known is named for the black spot that appears on the otherwise cream-colored peas. My true love says they do best with a long hot growing season. What are they called?

From Quiz Black is the Color in my True Love's Garden

Answer: Black-eyed peas

Black-eyed peas belong to the general class of cowpeas or field peas, and so are more closely related to beans than peas. Some people believe that eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day brings good fortune, particularly if eaten with greens, such as collard greens.

4. Known for its beautiful red flowers, which flower with the species name 'Salvia elegans' could in other words be described as a person much-knowledged of a tropical fruit?

From Quiz In the Red: Beautiful Blooms

Answer: Pineapple sage

The pineapple sage, also known as the tangerine sage, is native to the regions of Mexico and Guatemala. The plants grow through the summer and flourish and bloom in the late summer and early autumn, and do indeed have a pleasant pineappley smell. These plants attract hummingbirds, butterflies and humans alike. This fragrant option was created by Team Red's malik24.

5. This common leaf-lettuce variety is named for the color of its seeds and a person. Not much seems to be known about the person, but he or she probably wasn't a yellow cartoon character. What is this ruffled lettuce variety called?

From Quiz Black is the Color in my True Love's Garden

Answer: Black-seeded Simpson lettuce

Black-seeded Simpson was introduced commercially in the Peter Henderson seed catalog in the 1870s, and is still popular. My true love saves her own seeds by leaving in the garden the plants that "bolt" (send up seed stalks) last. She lets them bloom and set seed, dries the tops in the sun, then keeps the seeds with all their fuzz and chaff in a dark cool jar till next year. Next spring, she just sprinkles it all where she wants lettuce, and there are plenty of seeds among the chaff.

6. Often associated with death in Japanese legend, which scarlet flowering plant is also known as the 'spider lily'?

From Quiz In the Red: Beautiful Blooms

Answer: Lycoris

Hanakotoba is the Japanese form of the language of flowers. The Lycoris radiata symbolizes abandonment, longing, loss and lost memories. One legend says that if you meet a person that you won't see again these flowers grow along the path. They're also often used in funerals. This floral tribute was written by Team Red member sally0malley.

7. More than sixty species exist of a common red annual flower whose name is derived from Greek words meaning 'unfading flower'. What is this flower that the Aztecs cultivated into a grain for consumption?

From Quiz In the Red: Beautiful Blooms

Answer: Amaranthus

In addition to amaranthus grain, the various amaranthus species are also commonly used as decorations and eaten as leaf vegetables. While many of the species are red there are also variants that are green, gold and purple. Some amaranthus species are considered undesirable and have received the unfortunate nickname 'pigweed'. This question was carefully tended by Team Red member Triviaballer.

8. "The Watchman" is a black-flowered variety of this tall, exuberant, large-leafed, biennial that's often associated with cottage gardens, old farmsteads and picket fences.

From Quiz Black is Beautiful

Answer: Hollyhock

"The Watchman" hollyhock is a glorious addition to an heirloom garden. Imagine a row of pink, black and yellow hollyhocks (6-8 feet tall) against a white shingled farm house, shed, garage, or gazebo in mid-July. Bring out the icy lemonade and you're well on your way to great summer. None of the other choices have particularly large leaves and they aren't biennials.

9. 'Scarlet Cardinal', 'Hollandia' and 'Burning Heart' are all red varieties of which flower, associated with spring?

From Quiz In the Red: Beautiful Blooms

Answer: Tulip

The second variety might have given you an additional clue, since tulips are closely linked to The Netherlands, or Holland as it is sometimes called. The varieties listed are different shades of red, with 'Scarlet Cardinal' being an orange/red, 'Hollandia' red and 'Burning Heart' a cream/red. This question was cultivated in the mind of Team Red member Rossian.

Answer: Bird of paradise

The bird of paradise flower is named after a flower named after the birds of paradise, which are found mostly in New Guinea and often feature intricate designs in the plumage of some species. Answer: Swan River

There are over 100 species of the Swan River Pea and all but two of these are found in Western Australia and these are generally in the south western region of the state. The plants are commonly prostrate but shrubs have been known to grow to two metres in height. Most of these species are poisonous and may cause issues for farmers and their stock.
