'The Gondoliers; or, The King of Baritaria', the twelfth collaboration between Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert, debuted at the Savoy in 1889, and ran for 554 performances, making it the fifth-longest run for a musical theatre production at that time. It was during this run that the infamous carpet quarrel occurred, which led to the breakdown of the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership.

Inez reveals that in order to protect the King, she swapped him with her own son. This means that the man she has raised as her son is in fact the King - Luiz, the Duke's drummer. Since he and Casilda are in love, and the gondoliers are reunited with their wives, this means that the operetta ends happily for everybody.
