Soltan is not about to tell Heller the true name of the Apparattus base on Earth, and so tells him it means "Black Fortress", even though the true translation is "Black Opium Castle". Situated in Turkey, "Afyonkarahisar" is the base from which Lombar Hisst has begun importing Earth drugs to Voltar, to further his scheme.

Jettero Heller, of Manco, Grade X Fleet Combat Engineer, Royal Officer, Bullet Ball champion, Hero, and all around Nice Guy, is first kidnapped by the C.I.A. (Co-ordinated Information Apparatus) to cover up a report on Earth, and then recruited by Officer Griz, also of the C.I.A. to, he thinks, save the planet Earth from itself.

In a ploy to get Heller killed, Gris arranges for him to be given the name of the son of the wealthiest man on the planet. He is later given the name Jerome Terrance Wister by a lawyer named Bury. Horsey Mary Schmeck is the Heroin addicted prostitute he saves from the police, who later dies of drug withdrawl. And of course Bugs Bunny is the Cartoon Character adored by Officer Gris, who considers him a master of Applied Psycology.

O.K., it's obviously not Dorothy Gale, so it must be the highly feared, and offically dead, Countess Krak. Born to a family of circus entertainers, where she learned her training skills, the Countess Krak was forced into training a group of children to commit burglaries, for which she was sentenced to death.

The aged grey Cadillac that Heller buys figures prominently in the later books. Heller buys it mainly because it has a chemical burning engine, and is known as a fuel hog. He plans to use it, with major modifications, to prove that his "Gasless Carborator" works.

Lombar, who is more than slightly insane, has developed a plan based on Earth Psychology, to addict the Council of Lords, and incidentally the Emperor of Voltar, to heroin and amphetamines, turning them into puppets. He also hopes that one day he can become Emperor, even though he was born to the lowest class on Voltar.

Agents Stupewitz and Maulin nearly have a heart attack they get so exited when they read the name on Heller's birth certificate. They call Bury, of Swindle and Crouch, who is Delbert John Rockecenter's personal lawyer, and thus set off the series of events that end up with Heller being renamed Jerome Terrance Wister.

Answer: Will-Be-Was Time Drive

The Will-Be-Was Time Drive functions through gravitational falsification. One half of the Drive creates a fraudulant planetary mass just to the rear of the ship. The other half of the Drive reads this mass, says to itself that the mass in question is no longer there, and pushes it away, causing forward motion. Thus the name, Will-Be-Was. This Drive is the fastest known engine in the Voltar Confederacy. However, "Tug One's" sister ship "Tug Two" was destroyed by these engines, and therefore "Tug One" was decommisioned. (Side Notes: The Alderson Point Jump Engines are from "The Mote in God's Eye", by Jerry Pournelle.; The "Antimatter Space Warp Drive" is a long winded name for the Warp Engines of Star Trek fame. The "Quantum Singualrity Subspace Impeller" is an acurate description of the drive from "The Starwolf Trilogy" by David Gerrold.)

A taxi driver, mistaking Heller's desire to find a place to live as a desire for some action, takes Heller to the highest class Cat House in New York. Located directly across form the U.N. building, "The Gracious Palms" does business with the Ambassadors from many nations. On his first entrance Heller ends up saving the Manager, Vantagio Meretrici, from certain doom at the hands of the Faustino's mob's henchmen, because he refused to sell drugs to the Ambassadors. "The Gracious Palms" is owned and run by the Corleone mob, headed by the widow of "Holy Joe" Corleone, who was killed by Gunsalmo Silva.

Delbert John Rockecenter, through use of drugs and psychology, has raised himself from a nobody, to the unclaimed title of Emperor of Earth. Hisst, born a commoner, wishes to use drugs and psychology to gain control of Voltar in the same way. As a side note, both of them are quite, quite mad.

After having "Bang Bang" Rimbombo, of the Corleone mob, rescue his Cadillac from the booby-traps planted by the Faustino mob, he gets it rebuilt from the ground up, and has the garage paint it the most glaring color they have. While the reason for this escapes Officer Gris, it later becomes clear that he wants the car to stand out when he runs it through the Marathon Demolition Derby in Book 4, "An Alien Affair".

For three weeks Gris, and his driver Ske, were stranded in the Blike Mountains. Gris descibes this time as an "idyll of primitive atavism", as he spends most of it pursuing his favorite activity, hunting songbirds.

And Chief, in a primitive fire society such as Blito-P3, hydrogen and oxygen are the primary fuels."

Miss Simmons is infuriated at Heller because of his influence in being admitted to "Empire University" as a Senior, despite the extremely low grades the documents given to him by Bury of "Swindle and Crouch" show. She gives him an overbalanced classload in an attempt to force him to fail, and, as a back-up measure, forces him to take "Nature Appreciation 101", her own class, to try to instill in him a love of nature so that he will not blow the world up after he graduates. She is slightly unbalanced herself, being an anti-nuclear fanatic.
