Mary Hoffman Trivia Questions

1. Who was the first young Stravagante to stravigate from the 20th century in 'City of Masks'?

From Quiz
"Stravaganza" Series

Answer: Lucien

Lucien Mulholland introduced the world of stravagante (people who can travel between two worlds using a given talisman) by traveling from his 20th century world to the 16th century.

2. "City of Masks": How does the duchessa appear to be the same young age every year at the 'Marriage with the Sea'?

From Quiz "Stravaganza" Trilogy

Answer: She uses body doubles

The duchessa uses a body double each year. This year, the impersonation was done by Guiliana, who later becomes intertwined with the story as she is engaged to be married with Rinaldo Di Chimici's spy. Later in the book, she is asked to impersonate for a different occasion, which leads to her death. The duchessa deliberately put her in that position of peril, and reasoned with it by saying that she violated the agreement of revealing to no one that she had taken the duchessa's place at the 'Marriage with the Sea', which indeed she had violated. The ruthless duchessa made this plan ironic, as Guiliana was killed by her own fiance. The duchessa, however, used this death to her own advantage; she planned to pretend that the assassination had succeeded, and became once again Silvia Bellini - and went to live an alias in Padavia as a rich widow.

3. What was Lucien's very first Talisman that transported him to the 16th century world in 'City of Masks'?

Paola is able to figure out di Chimici's plan and, through the language of lace, tells Silvia (The Duchessa) about the next assassination attempt.

5. What do many people comment on as a feature of the city Lucien first stravigates to that makes it different from the other cities such as Talia?

Answer: Mandolas are the main form of transport here

Many characters throughout the three books in the series mention that though Bellelza is a beautiful city they missed the horses that were in many of the other cities. 6. "City of Masks": When Lucien's shadow is seen on the floor in the people's senate, what does this mean for his real body in 21st century England?

From Quiz "Stravaganza" Trilogy

Answer: He has died in 21st century England

Lucien could not Stravagate home, because he was kidnapped in Talia and his Talisman was taken from him. What he did not know, however, was that even if Rinaldo di Chimici did give him the book back, he could not Stravagate home because Rodolfo had replaced the real book with a substitute one, so that if di Chimici did get his hands on it, he wouldn't be able to discover anything about the secret of stravagation. Rodolfo made the mistake of not telling him this, which would have given Lucien slightly less cause to worry, but even if Lucien had known, there would have been nothing he could do to get home. In 21st century England, Lucien's mother - Vicky Mulholland - and his father - David Mulholland - become worried when they cannot wake their son, believing that it is the Leukemia and Tumor. Lucien not stravagating home destabilises the time barrier, so what is only hours in Talia is weeks in England. Worried about their son, Lucien's parents take his sleeping body to the doctor, who says it's a coma. Three weeks pass in England and Lucien does not wake, so the doctor decides that there is nothing else to do but pull the plug on the machines that are keeping Lucien alive. He was now a permanent citizen of Bellezza, and a visitor from 16th century Talia to 21st century England, and not the other way around.

17. What is the most precious substance in the 16th century world?

Answer: Silver

This difference between the worlds is highlighted often. It is the stravagante's duty to hide their power in order to keep the portal between the worlds safe from the enemy D'ciminchi family.
