Fun Trivia
In the leadup to Magrat's marriage to King Verence, the barrier between Lancre and the world of the Elves is weakened, leading to an invasion. Many elements of this story will remind you of Shakespeare's 'Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Lords And Ladies Trivia Questions

1. Which witch's nuptials with King Verence II of Lancre form the background for the events in "Lords and Ladies"?

From Quiz
Don't Say Their Name

Answer: Magrat Garlick

Magrat is the youngest, and most 'New Age', of the three witches who lead the fight to keep the elves from returning to Lancre and ruling it. At the start of the book, she has just returned from a journey to Genua (see "Witches Abroad", the previous book in the series, for details) and discovers that her vague understanding of an interest in a possible relationship with Verence has been accelerated into an impending marriage. She eventually discovers that this has been caused by a letter from Granny Weatherwax advising Verence to push the matter so that Magrat cannot be her own worst enemy by hesitating in the matter. Esmerelda Weatherwax, more often called Esme by her friends and Granny by the rest of the world, and Gytha "Nanny" Ogg are the senior witches in the Lancre coven. Because Magrat is preoccupied with her impending marriage, it is they who are at the centre of the action for most of the book. Galinda is from another series entirely, hailing from the land of the Gillikins in Gregory Maguire's revisionist series of Oz novels.

2. What was the name of the ancient Queen who 'communicated' with Magrat after she put on her armor.

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: Queen Ynci The Short-Tempered

Magrat claimed to hear the voice of the late Queen Ynci The Short-Tempered encouraging her to be brave and relentless. In reality, Queen Ynci was a complete and utter fabrication of the late King Lully...who was apparently a bit mad about romantic history.

3. To what animal are elves repeatedly compared in this book?

From Quiz Don't Say Their Name

Answer: Cats

There are repeated comparisons, both directly and in the choice of an adjective or adverb to describe the appearance and behavior of the elves, to their playing with humans much as cats play with mice. Scenes in which Magrat is trapped inside the castle and they are trying to lure her out bring images of a cartoon cat peering in at a mousehole irresistibly to mind. As Nanny Ogg reflects, "We remember the elves for their beauty and the way they move, and forget what they were. We're like mice saying, 'Say what you like, cats have got real style.'"

4. According to Nanny Ogg, what is "Chateau" foreign for?

From Quiz 'Lords and Ladies' Random Questons

Answer: Cat's water

Chat-eau. But she says the Chateau Maison wasn't made with real cat's water; it tastes sharper than the wine.

5. There is a ring of stones which guard the door to another world in Lancre. What are these stones called?

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: The Dancers

The stones are called the Dancers. They're said to be ordinary and perfectly dull. They're made of iron, and keep the elves away.

6. How do the witches become aware that the distance between their world and that of the elves is thinning?

From Quiz Don't Say Their Name

Answer: Crop circles appear

Granny Weatherwax finds a crop circle in her herb garden. Nanny Ogg's grandson Pewsey is distressed when one forms in the tray of sprouts he is proudly displaying to her. Magrat can't help but notice that a large circle forms in the crop of beans that Verence has grown in the palace rose garden to introduce the farmers to modern farming techniques. The three witches immediately meet to discuss the problem. Magrat is too young to remember why crop circles are dangerous, but knows they are. This is the first time that the older witches avoid naming the precise danger they face, as naming it gives it increased power. Nanny Ogg just refers to the need to stop Them. Magrat is so irritated at being treated like a child that she flounces back to the castle to get ready to be queen, leaving Granny and Nanny to organize the defense of the kingdom.

7. Who wrote The Entertainment to be performed at the wedding?

From Quiz 'Lords and Ladies' Random Questons

Answer: Hwel

Read 'Wyrd Sisters' for the convulted parentage which led to Verence becoming King, but when he mentions that his brother (Tomjon) and Mr. Vitoller's men can't come to the wedding as they will be touring Klatch, he says that Hwel the playwright has written something for the wedding - something even rustics can't mess up. Shows how much he knows.

8. What is special about the stones that keep the elves away?

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: They're made of the love of iron

They're made of iron and the love of iron. Elves hate iron.

9. What is the name of the ancient formation of standing stones that usually provides a barrier to the elves?

From Quiz Don't Say Their Name

Answer: The Dancers

'The Dancers' are a circle of stones (imagine Stonehenge, if you will) made of a material that is described as 'iron-loving' (magnetic). Because they attract iron so strongly, nothing made of or containing iron can pass through the circle they form. The circle also acts as a barrier between Discworld and the world of the elves, but it is a barrier that is weakened when the distance between the two worlds is thinner than usual, which is when crop circles form. It is implied that if a crop circle were to form so that it intersected the circle formed by the Dancers, their power would disappear completely, and the path between the worlds would be open. Granny and Nanny are determined to avoid this.

10. What does Jason Ogg tell the other Morris Men that they are NEVER to mention again?

From Quiz 'Lords and Ladies' Random Questons

Answer: The Stick and Bucket Dance

Old Mr. Thrum still walks with a limp from the apparent last time they performed the Stick and Bucket Dance three months earlier. When the elves invade Lancre, they end up doing the Stick and Bucket dance and take out several elves. The Webley Twizzle is a real Morris Dance deemed to be physically dangerous.

11. Why is Esme able to capture the unicorn?

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: She's a virgin

Only a virgin is capable of capturing a unicorn. And as Mrs. Ogg says, Granny was able to outrun every boy in Lancre.

12. Esme Weatherwax has a powerful ability to enter the minds of animals. What is this practice called?

From Quiz Don't Say Their Name

Answer: Borrowing

Granny Weatherwax often sends her mind to reside within the body of a nearby useful animal so that she can explore the region quickly. Early in this book, Nanny Ogg finds her looking dead, but with a sign reading "I ATE'NT DEAD" clutched in her hands to reassure visitors. She returns from exploring the kingdom inside the body of a bat (chosen in preference to her usual nighttime owl because the owl's constant neck turning always leaves her with a stiff neck) with a strong taste of moth in her mouth, and the news that some local girls have been dancing near the standing stones. Nanny Ogg, uncomfortable with the uncanny practice of borrowing, obtained the same information by grilling her son Jason, who also provided the names of two of the girls.

13. Diamanda challenged Granny to a contest where each of them would have to stare at the sun for as long as they could. How did Granny win?

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: She tended to Pewsey when he fell inside the magic circle.

When Pewsey, who was planted by Gytha, fell inside the circle and cried out, Granny looked away from the sun and tended to him. The townspeople then stated that she won, because that was what witchcraft was about.

14. What is gem-like name of the leader of the would-be witches who have been dancing near the stone circle at the full moon?

From Quiz Don't Say Their Name

Answer: Diamanda Tockley

The aspiring witches accept the leadership of Lucy Tockley, who prefers to be called Diamanda, and who seems (in their eyes) to know everything necessary about becoming witches. It is she who takes on Granny Weatherwax in a staring contest, and loses only because she keeps staring at the sun (the challenge) when Granny stops to rescue young Pewsey, who 'accidentally' enters the magic circle during the duel. Agnes Nitt, witch-name Perdita, will be an important witch in future books. Magenta Frottidge was named Violet by her parents. Amanita Muscaria is a poisonous (reputedly psychogenic) fungus which has a red cap with white spots. Think of the 'toadstools' you have seen fairies dancing around in cartoons for a clear image. There is no witch with this name, but one of Diamanda's followers is Muscara (born Susan), and another is Amanita.

15. From whom did Granny Weatherwax learn witchcraft?

From Quiz 'Lords and Ladies' Random Questons

Answer: Nanny Gripes

She learned it from Nanny Gripes who learned it from Goody Heggety who learned it from Nanny Plumb who learned it from Black Aliss. When Diamanda says "So what you're saying is that nobody has actually learned anything new?", you know her fate is sealed.

16. Which member of Nanny's family influences the outcome of the battle between Granny and Diamanda?

From Quiz 'Lords and Ladies' Random Questons

Answer: Pewsey

When Pewsey falls into the magic circle while running across the square (towards Nanny dangling a bag of sweets), Granny looks away from the sun to help him. Diamanda says that disqualifies Granny, but the villagers say that a true witch is someone who would look around when she heard a child scream.

17. On Casanunda's card he is claimed to be 'The world's second greatest lover' in bold lettering underneath his name. What quote is printed underneath this?

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: "We Never Sleep"

"We never Sleep" is what's printed there. There are other statements under that, which include; Finest Swordsman, Outrageous Liar, Soldier of Fortune and Stepladders Repaired.

18. What renowned lover's name is referenced by the name of the dwarf who attempts to hold up Ridcully's party on their way to the wedding?

From Quiz Don't Say Their Name

Answer: Casanova

Giamo Casanunda first makes himself known in this book (we have met him before, in "Witches Abroad") as he delivers the immortal line "Kneel and deliver!", attempting to rob Mustrum Ridcully, Ponder Stibbons, the Bursar of Unseen University and the Librarian as they are travelling from Ankh-Morpork to Lancre. His business card proclaims him 'World's Second Greatest Lover', 'Finest Swordsman', 'Soldier of Fortune' and 'Outrageous Liar', some or all of which may be true. Certainly he appeals to Nanny Ogg - their attempt at a romantic dinner is what keeps her from attending the Entertainment, so that she is on the spot when the elves start rampaging through town. Meanwhile, Ridcully has transported Granny Weatherwax to Lancre Bridge in an attempt to revive their youthful romance.

19. How much did Ridcully wind up owing Casanunda after playing Cripple Mr. Onion with him.

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: $8,000

He owes him $8000 long after it should have been clear to him that Casanunda had lied about his playing skills.

20. When Granny Weatherwax collapses to the ground during her confrontation with the Elf Queen, what surprising animal offers her a means of escape?

From Quiz Don't Say Their Name

Answer: Bees

All the bees from Granny Weatherwax's garden respond to her call, and swarm to the stone circle, where they cover her body. Esme then performs the astonishing feat of Borrowing (entering the mind of another creature) with the entire hive, so that her mind is spread across the minds of thousands of bees as they fly away. Her apparently dead body is left behind, and carried back to the castle by a forlorn Ridcully. While going through Esme's belongings, Nanny Ogg realizes what has happened, races to the Great Hall and opens the windows to let the bees back in, so that Esme's mind can be restored to her own body.

21. How many times have the Lancre Morris Men won the Fifteen Mountains All-Comers Morris Championship?

From Quiz 'Lords and Ladies' Random Questons

Answer: 6

"Three times outright, once after eleven hours extra time, and twice when the other finalists ran away." We don't find out if they won with the Stick and Bucket Dance any of those times.

22. What did Ridcully do to the bandit who tried to rob their coach?

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: He turned him into a pumpkin

He turned him into a pumpkin. Apparently, according to the laws of comedy he still had his hat. Also, Ridcully assured the coachman that it would wear off in a couple hours.

23. What did the Bursar suggest as a remedy when he found out that Ridcully was going bald?

From Quiz Lords And Ladies

Answer: A mixture of honey and horse manure

The Bursar claimed that his grandfather swore by this mixture. Later on, Ridcully also wears a mouse cage on his head as well, in accordance with other things that the Bursar suggested.
