Five Little Pigs Trivia Questions

1. Although Caroline Crale was convicted of murdering her husband Amyas 16 years before the story begins, why does her daughter Carla believe Caroline to be innocent?

From Quiz
Five Little Pigs

Answer: Because Caroline told her daughter she was innocent

Carla produces a letter her mother wrote her from prison in which she explains that she is innocent. While normally this would not be convincing, Carla remembers her mother would never lie to her, ever, in any circumstance. Poirot is not convinced by this, but agrees to take up the challenge of proving Caroline Crale innocent (or guilty).

2. Amyas Crale was murdered via coniine poisoning, which had been stolen by Caroline from Meredith Blake. How was the coniine administered to Amyas?

From Quiz Five Little Pigs

Answer: In his glass of beer

The fact that the coniine poison was found in the glass of beer but not in the beer bottle is one of the major clues for Poirot that proves Caroline innocent. Since Caroline was seen wiping fingerprints off the bottle of beer, it meant that she thought the poison was in the bottle and not in the glass.

3. Who was convicted of the murder?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Caroline Crale

All the evidence pointed to her, plus the fingerprints on the bottle of poison were hers - and she admitted having taken it from Meredith. She died in jail a year later.

4. Who consulted a detective about solving the crime 16 years later?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Carla Lemarchant

She had come of age (21) and had been told about her early childhood years. Her mother, Caroline, had written her a letter before her death, claiming innocence.

5. 'This little pig went to market'. Which character 'went to market'?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Philip Blake

He was a stockbroker, and Amyas's best friend. He was staying at the estate at the time.

6. 'This little pig stayed at home'. Who 'stayed at home'?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Meredith Blake

Merry (Philip's brother) lived next door to the Crales, and the coniine used was from his mixture of spotted hemlock.

7. 'This little pig ate roast beef'. Who was this pampered character?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Elsa Greer

Amyas was painting a portrait of this rich divorcee who was only 20 at the time.

8. 'This little pig had none'. Who 'had none'?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Cecilia Williams

She was the governess to Caroline's sister Angela. She was aged at about 50 at the time.

9. 'This little pig cried "wee, wee, wee" all the way home'. Who does this refer to?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Angela Warren

Caroline's disfigured sister. Caroline had thrown a paperweight at her as a baby. She was 15 when the murder occurred.

10. Who solved the crime?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Hercule Poirot

Carla hired the Belgian with the 'little grey cells' to find out the truth so that she could marry John Rattery in peace. Marple and the Beresfords are other detectives of Christie's, and Holmes was the detective in Arthur Conan Doyle's books.

11. After Elsa is revealed to be Amyas' killer, in what manner is justice served?

From Quiz Five Little Pigs

Answer: She leads a miserable life

Poirot promises Elsa that he intends to try and bring the case against her. However, after 16 years and slim evidence, he admits it is unlikely. It is implied that Elsa will get away with the murder. However, during those 16 years, Elsa married and became Lady Dittisham. Despite her new and wealthy life, Elsa has led an unhappy life since she killed Amyas. Poirot explains that this miserable feeling stems from the fact that she never won over Amyas, losing him to Caroline. The couple is now together in death leaving Elsa to go about her life completely emotionally alone.

12. Who was the real murderer?

From Quiz Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs"

Answer: Elsa

Evidence pointed to Caroline, who had thought the killer was Angela and tried to cover it up (though as a suicide), hence 'one has to pay one's debts'. Elsa Greer (now Lady Dittisham) knew the evidence would go against Caroline as well, but in killing Amyas she also killed a part of herself. The almost finished portrait, according to Poirot, was of Elsa 'watching her lover die'. Hope you enjoyed doing this quiz!
