Two One Trivia Questions

1. Why was Mr Morley on a bad mood on the day of his murder? (I hope he didn't know about it!)

From Quiz
Why?

Answer: His assistant/secretary Gladys was on a leave

A hoax telegram was sent to Miss Nevill stating that her aunt had a stroke. It was meant to keep her away for that day. Morley, of course, didn't know that, but guessed that the telegram was a bogus telegram so that Miss Nevill and her fiancé, Frank Carter, could spend some time and felt angry.

2. This book was also published under other titles. Which were they?

From Quiz One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Answer: Both of these

It was initially titled 'The Patriotic Murders' and later 'An Overdose of Murder'.

3. What reason was accepted by the police for Morley having committed suicide?

From Quiz Why?

Answer: He had accidentally killed a patient by using an overdose of medicine

Amberiotis was a blackmailer and the likely candidate for killing Morley. When the police went to investigate him, however, they found that he was also dead. The reason for his death was given as an overdose of two anaesthetics used by dentists. The police put forward the theory that Morley committed this mistake, realized it and hence committed suicide.

4. Mr Barnes did not accept that Morley had committed suicide. What was his own theory regarding this?

From Quiz Why?

Answer: Morley was offered a bribe to kill Alistair Blunt, which he refused

Mr Barnes stated that it was common knowledge that a large group of people wanted to kill Mr Blunt, and stated that he would be very vulnerable in a dentist's chair. Morley must have been offered the job, but was killed after he refused to do so. He gave three more instances of such happenings.

5. Julia Olivera had recently come to England along with her daughter, Jane, and lived at Alistair Blunt's house. Where had they come from?

From Quiz One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Answer: America

Julia, Alistair Blunt's niece by marriage, was unhappy with her daughter's growing fondness for Howard Raikes. She brought her to England in order to separate them. She also hoped that Alistair Blunt would take a liking to Jane and leave her the bulk of his estate since he had no other close relatives.

6. Miss Olivera called Mr Poirot to tell him about Miss Sainsbury Seale's meeting with her uncle, Alistair Blunt, a few months back, on reading about Miss Sainsbury Seale's disappearance in the newspaper. Was that her true intention?

From Quiz Why?

Answer: No; she wished to know if Howard Raikes was involved in the case

Miss Olivera had other reasons for calling on Poirot. She had arranged a meeting between Howard Raikes, the man she loved, and her uncle at Mr Morley's chamber on that fateful day. She wanted to know if Mr Raikes was involved in the case in any way. She had expected something to happen to Mr Blunt, as Mr Raikes had different political ideals than Mr Blunt and was quite violent, and not something to happen to Mr Morley. She even remarked, "Absurd", on hearing that Mr Morley was dead.

7. Whose dead body did the police find at King Leopold Mansions?

From Quiz One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Answer: Mabelle Sainsbury Seale

The body was found in a large metal chest in a flat belonging to Mrs. Alice Chapman. The face of the corpse was battered beyond recognition. A handbag containing a letter addressed to Mabelle Sainsbury Seale was found inside the chest.

8. Who (really) was the woman living in a small cottage on Alistair Blunt's estate at Exsham?

From Quiz One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Answer: His wife, Gerda

Blunt told everyone that the woman living in the cottage was his distant cousin, Helen Montressor from Canada. It is later revealed that Helen had died a few years ago. The woman impersonating her was Blunt's first wife, Gerda. He had hidden his earlier marriage in order to marry Rebecca Arnholt for her wealth and the power it would give him. Gerda acquiesced to the situation. Even after Rebecca's death, they didn't marry and preferred to continue meeting clandestinely.

9. However, Poirot was nearing the end of the case. Why did he think that the real Miss Sainsbury Seale was murdered?

From Quiz Why?

Answer: She had a very good memory for faces

Alistair Blunt was already married when he married Rebecca Arnold, and was guilty of bigamy. When they were in India, Miss Sainsbury Seale worked with his wife, Gerda, and now recognized Alistair Blunt again. The little information given by Miss Olivera helped Poirot to realize this point. He remembered from Miss Olivera's statement that Miss Sainsbury Seale had met Alistair Blunt a few months back. During that meeting, she had claimed to be a friend of Mr Blunt's wife, who could most certainly not be a woman of high status like Rebecca Arnold. Miss Sainsbury Seale was killed to preserve this secret.

10. Who was the last person to see Morley alive?

From Quiz One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Answer: Alistair Blunt

Alistair Blunt shot Morley after his dental appointment. The next patient, Mabelle Sainsbury Seale, was in cahoots with Blunt. Mabelle had in fact already been murdered and the woman impersonating her was Blunt's first wife. This was Amberiotis' first visit to Morley and hence he didn't know that it was Blunt, not Morley, pretending to be the dentist. Blunt then administered the fatal dose of anesthetic to him.

11. What was the name of Alistair Blunt's cousin?

From Quiz Why?

Answer: Helen Montressor

In the penultimate chapter, in which Poirot explains the case, we come to know that the real Helen Montressor had died seven years ago. Alistair Blunt took advantage of this fact and kept his real wife, Gerda, disguised as her. She also played the roles of Mrs Chapman and the fake Mabelle Sainsbury Seale to perfection.

12. What was the reason behind Mr. Barnes' interest in this case?

From Quiz One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Answer: He was secret agent, Albert Chapman.

When Mabelle Sainsbury Seale's body was found, investigations revealed that the flat belonged to Albert Chapman and his wife had been living there for quite some time. She had also told some neighbours that her husband was involved in espionage work for the British government. Mr. Barnes was in fact secret agent Albert Chapman and as he had never married, he was curious about the woman claiming to be his wife.

13. Who murdered both Mr Amberiotis and Mr Morley?

From Quiz Why?

Answer: Alistair Blunt

Alistair Blunt killed Morley and pretended to be him when Amberiotis came in. Amberiotis knew about Mr Blunt's secret from Miss Sainsbury Seale, and it was necessary to kill him to stop his blackmail. Blunt killed him with the overdose. It was a perfect plan - the deaths cancelled each other out. He would have gotten away scot free, if it wasn't for Hercule Poirot and his "little grey cells".

14. Who had murdered Mr. Amberiotis and Mabelle Sainsbury Seale?

From Quiz One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Answer: Alistair Blunt

Mabelle Sainsbury Seale had been a friend of Blunt's first wife, Gerda, and recognized him even though she was seeing him after many years. In order to keep his first marriage a secret, Blunt had to murder her. Later, Amberiotis started blackmailing him once he learnt of Blunt's earlier marriage through an accidental meeting with Mabelle. Blunt decided to administer an overdose of anesthetic to him during his appointment with the dentist and hence Morley had to be killed. Thus, he ended up committing three murders. He was so full of himself and his own importance, that he considered his safety to be a matter of national interest and even tried to convince Poirot that his well-being was more important than delivering justice for the crimes committed.
