Bill Hodges Series Trivia Questions

1. Where was Bill Hodges when Pete called him about a murder/suicide scene he was working?

From Quiz
End of Watch

Answer: Doctor's office

Bill was there to get test results from his doctor, Dr. Stamos. Holly had urged him in to see the doctor after he suffered from recurring bouts of stomach pain. Pete called about the murder of Martine Stover, and the suicide of Martine's mother, Janice Ellerton. Martine had been left paralyzed after the mass murder at City Center by the Mercedes Killer. Janice had fed her daughter a mixture of pills and vodka, via her feeding tube. Then, Janice killed herself.

2. The story started off in what fateful year for author John Rothstein?

From Quiz Finders Keepers

Answer: 1978

Poor Rothstein, age 79, was woken by burglars in his home. The three men who'd invaded in the wee hours of the morning were Morrie, Freddy, and Curtis. They demanded the combination to his safe, which happened to be John's birth date (March of 1899). Freddy and Curtis were interested in money, while Morrie wanted hidden manuscripts. They found both in the safe, and Morrie killed John because John hurt his feelings. Morrie had some serious emotional deficiencies, mostly narcissism.

3. Who did August "Augie" Odenkirk meet when he first arrived at the First Annual City Job Fair?

From Quiz Mr. Mercedes

Answer: Janice and her baby girl Patti

Augie had his own car, but in an effort to save on gas, he took the bus in hopes of finding a job. He met Janice Cray immediately, who was also in line waiting for the event to begin. They'd both recently lost their jobs. She'd been a housekeeper for a family who owned a car dealership, and had absolutely no one to babsyit her well bundled up baby girl Patti. Augie, Janice and Patti were all killed shortly after they met.

4. What was the name of the website that Mr. Mercedes wanted to use to talk with retired detective K. William Hodges?

From Quiz Mr. Mercedes

Answer: Under Debbie's Blue Umbrella

Brady Hartsfield, Mr. Mercedes, wasn't too afraid of being tracked through the website because it had servers in Europe. Brady worked at Discount Electronix, and believed his choice of writing style prevented Hodges from using forensics to analyze his handwriting. Carrie's Moving Parts is a nod to Carrie White from King's novel "Carrie", and Jack's Devolving Torrent is a nod to Jack Torrance from "The Shining".

5. Brady contacted Bill once more through a social media site. What was the name of that site?

From Quiz End of Watch

Answer: Under Debbie's Blue Umbrella

As in "Finders Keepers", Brady used the same site to contact Bill. He did so while inhabiting Al Brooks' body, and calling himself Z-Boy. Z-Boy was a persona Brady developed inside Al, who could be put to use as Brady needed. Setting up shop inside people slowly erased the original identity, so Brady had to be patient with the people with whom he had access. He couldn't overstay his welcome, so to speak. The Dal Riata was the bar owned by Trick in the TV series "Lost Girl".

6. What was the name of the fictional character, created by John Rothstein, who Morrie became obsessed with?

From Quiz Finders Keepers

Answer: Jimmy Gold

Jimmy was everything Morris "Morrie" Bellamy wanted to be, and he was about fourteen when he discovered Jimmy. His teacher had given him the first book in John Rothstein's "Runner" trilogy. When Morrie read the third book he was devastated by the turn of events. Jimmy, once carefree and daring, had become the average grown up. He had a wife, kids, house, friends, and a job in advertising. Morrie felt John Rothstein had sold out. That was one of the reasons he was okay with killing the man. Pinkie Brown was from "Brighton Rock" by Graham Greene, Huck Finn was created by Mark Twain, and Dexter Morgan by Jeff Lindsay.

7. Who owned the car that Mr. Mercedes used to run down the people at City Center?

From Quiz Mr. Mercedes

Answer: Olivia Ann Trelawney

After the mass murder at City Center, 52 year old Ms. Trelawney denied having anything to do with aiding the killer. But he had the key, the smart key in fact, that controlled her expensive car. He even locked it after he abandoned it. She later appeared to have committed suicide, thus cementing her guilt in the public eye. After the letter from Mr. Mercedes, Hodges no longer believed in the suicide as a certainty. Wanda Debec is from the novel "Under the Dome", Fran Goldsmith is from the novel and mini-series "The Stand", and Audrey Parker is from the TV show "Haven" which is based on King's story "The Colorado Kid".

8. Dr. Felix Babineau used an experimental drug on Brady he called ______.

From Quiz End of Watch

Answer: Cerebellin

Cerebellin (truly known as Number 649558) was not approved for use in the USA, and Babineau found Brady to be the perfect candidate for unauthorized trials. When it appeared to have no affect, Babineau decided to stop giving it to the killer. Later in the story, we learn from Brady's perspective that it was he who'd convinced the doctor the drug was not working. It obviously had worked, because the MRIs showed "unprecedented" repair to the damage inside Brady's brain. Brady couldn't let that get out, lest he be tried for all of his crimes. Adravil was an OTC type of pain reliever created by the Umbrella Corporation in the "Resident Evil" franchise, Dittany was the healing drug used in the "Harry Potter" franchise, and Lot 6 was from another Stephen King story, "Firestarter".

9. Who was sending anonymous cash money to the Saubers through the postal mail?

From Quiz Finders Keepers

Answer: Pete Saubers

Pete found a trunk filled with money and journals down by the creek. It had been buried near a tree by Morrie Bellamy in 1978. Morrie's confidant, Andy, had urged him to hide the evidence that linked Morrie to John Rothstein's murder. So, Morrie buried it just down from his mother's home, on an overgrown patch of land near the creek. That evening, Morrie got blind drunk and assaulted a woman named Cora Ann Hooper. He was sentenced to life in prison, and would not get out until 2014. Meanwhile, the Saubers family moved into that home years later during economic hard times. Pete found the trunk by accident, when part of the earth covering it shifted and the treasure was exposed. He used the money inside to help his family through the financial strain by sending in about $500 a month to his father. This relief eventually led to his mom getting a better job, his dad recovering significantly from his Mr. Mercedes injuries, and Pete reading all of John Rothstein's secret writings. These included two more novels about Jimmy Gold, and in those Jimmy reverted back to the wily and fun person he'd once been.

10. Mr. Mercedes had two jobs. One was at an electronics store and the other was in which type of food service?

From Quiz Mr. Mercedes

Answer: Ice cream truck driver

Yes, he drove a Mr. Tastey ice cream truck. It gave him a reason for being in better neighborhoods than his own, like Hodges' part of town or even the Sugar Heights section where Ms. Trelawney lived.

11. After he'd successfully talked three woman into suicide, which of Bill's friends did Brady almost kill in the same manner?

From Quiz End of Watch

Answer: Barbara Robinson

Barbara had escaped death at the 'Round Here concert in "Finders Keepers". But, Brady had organized a way to get the Zappit games to kids who'd been at the arena that night. Barbara had been "talked" into going to an area known as Lowtown, and to walk herself into oncoming traffic. A boy from Todhunter High had shoved her out of the way and she'd only suffered minor injuries. Brady had become impatient and rushed into harming Jerome Robinson's little sister. After the accident, Jerome returned from Arizona, where he'd been building homes with Habitat for Humanity. The boy who saved Barbara, Dereece Neville, came to visit her frequently after her accident. Brady had already talked nurses Sadie and Ruth into suicide, as well as Janice Ellerton. Penny Kalisto is a character from "Odd Thomas" and Freddi was one of Brady's co-workers in book one, "Mr. Mercedes".

12. Which terminal illness was Bill Hodges diagnosed with in this book?

From Quiz End of Watch

Answer: Pancreatic cancer

After he found out, he lied to Holly about it. But, she did some quick searching and discovered the truth. That truth, and Barbara's accident, brought Jerome home from Arizona. The three of them sought to uncover the connection behind the Zappit consoles and the suicides surrounding them.

13. How did Mr. Mercedes' mother die?

From Quiz Mr. Mercedes

Answer: Poisoning

Brady had purchased gopher killer and put the poison into hamburger meat. He stored this tasty treat inside his own mini-fridge to serve to Odell later. His alcoholic incestuous mother found the meat, cooked it for herself and ate it. By the time Brady arrived home, she was well on her way to an agonizing death. His instinct was to save her, but he quickly realized he'd be condemning himself should he call for help, so he let her die.

14. When he was 12 years old Brady read a book about what man, which led to his fascination with suicide?

From Quiz End of Watch

Answer: Reverand Jim Jones

The book was called "Raven", and it talked about how Jim Jones had basically hypnotized a mass of followers into believing death was a glamorous eventuality. This was based on the true story of a religious cult called the Peoples Temple. Brady was impressionable, and very smart, and the ability to control people into taking their own lives was his true desire. He'd also planned for his own suicide, which would have happened if Holly hadn't stopped him from using an explosive during the concert.

15. What weapon did Morrie use to kill his old pal Andy, the bookstore owner?

From Quiz Finders Keepers

Answer: Hatchet

Morrie bought the hatchet at Home Depot, along with some tools to retrieve the buried trunk. When he found the trunk empty, Morrie deduced that Andy must have figured out his hiding spot. Andy actually had no idea and have never tried to locate the notebooks on his own. He figured Pete had discovered the treasure somewhere inside Morrie's old house. Morrie confronted Andy, who confessed to his dealings with young Pete. So, Morrie took his revenge, axed Andy to death and gathered more evidence on Pete Saubers.

16. How did Brady's original body die?

From Quiz End of Watch

Answer: He overdosed himself with drugs

He installed himself inside Dr. Babineau's body and stayed inside so long that the doctor disappeared almost completely. Then, he used the doctor's body to go back to the hospital and into room 217. Once there, Brady left the doctor's body and went back inside his own body long enough to take an overdose mixture of Ambien and Vicodin (which he'd taken from Babineau's house). After the overdose was taken care of, Brady left his body and re-entered the doctor's once more. He left the hospital and went to the hunting camp to finish his reign of suicides.

17. Mr. Mercedes bombed Hodges' Toyota after the funeral service for Mrs. Wharton. Instead of killing Hodges in the explosion, who did it kill?

From Quiz Mr. Mercedes

Answer: Janey

Janey Patterson, Olivia's younger sister, was killed. Janey and Hodges had become lovers and investigators in the short time they'd known each other. And though she'd told him she was not staying in town after the funeral, she did admit to herself that she was in love with him. Holly, in her fragile state, needed her new friend Bill Hodges to ride with her from the funeral home. So, Janey agreed to drive Bill's car. Brady had no idea it was Janey driving, as she was wearing Bill's hat. He blew up the car, killing her instantly. Bill made a quick call to Jerome to instruct him to stay silent about their investigation and then to send Mr. Mercedes a message at Under Debbie's Blue Umbrella. The message taunted Brady, who realized he'd failed to be rid of the ole "Det-Ret" after all. Detective Retired Hodges let Brady know he was coming for him.

18. How was Morrie Bellamy killed?

From Quiz Finders Keepers

Answer: In a fire

Morrie had Tina trapped in the basement of the Rec, an abandoned property Pete's dad was in charge of selling. The Rec, as it had been known even in Morrie's time, was also the place Pete had hidden the Rothstein notebooks. Pete told Bill, Holly, and Jerome he was heading home to make sure him mom and sister were safe, and that he'd meet them all there. Unfortunately, Morrie arrived first and shot Linda Saubers in the head. He abducted Tina as a ransom for the notebooks, using Tina's cellphone to communicate with Pete. Once they were all at the Rec together, Pete doused the notebooks in lighter fluid and held a lit Zippo lighter over them. He and Morrie were at standoff. Pete offered up the unharmed notebooks in exchange for their release, but Morrie said he was going to shoot Tina multiple times instead. Bill and Jerome arrived at the Rec, Holly stayed behind to make sure Linda received medical attention, and Pete was startled into dropping the Zippo onto the fuel-laced books. Morrie tried to save the notebooks as Bill, Tina, and Pete were pulled from the building by Jerome. Morrie died in the fire and Linda, only grazed by the bullet, recovered.

19. Who was it that actually stopped Mr. Mercedes before he could detonate a bomb a the MAC center?

From Quiz Mr. Mercedes

Answer: Holly

Holly came a long way during her short time in the novel. Seeing her cousin Janey blown into pieces had snapped her out of her role as a victim. She helped Jerome and Bill Hodges ferret out Brady's true final plan. When the three arrived at the MAC, short for Midwest Culture and Arts Complex, Hodges was having a heart attack. Jerome and Holly had to get to Brady before he set off the bomb. When they reached him, Holly hit him in the head a couple of times, and this left him in a coma. They averted the disaster and received a medal. Hodges did not receive a medal, but was lucky not to be charged with any obstruction crimes.

20. At the end of the book, who did Bill Hodges visit at the traumatic brain injury hospital?

From Quiz Finders Keepers

Answer: Brady Hartsfield

Ever since Brady woke up out of a coma, a year after Holly had bashed his brains in so to speak, Bill had visited him regularly. Brady, Mr. Mercedes himself, had never been expected to wake from the coma. So, when he did, Bill felt it necessary to check and make sure Brady was still empty on the inside. He'd use verbal taunts to try and get a reaction, but it had never worked. In the months prior to this latest visit, rumors had begun to circulate that Brady had some kind of mental powers. He could turn on water in other areas of the hospital, move objects, etc. Bill once again tried to get Brady to engage, if he was even able to do so, but nothing came of it. So, Bill left Brady to his dreary life... Final passage of the book: "When Hodges is gone, Brady raises his head...In the bathroom, the water in the sink gushes, then stops. Brady looks at the picture of him and his mother, smiling with their cheeks pressed together. Stares at it. Stares at it. The picture falls over. Clack." - July 26, 2014. Maybe, it's true. Maybe Brady does have some kind of power after all? I suspect the third book will reveal the truth. Stay tuned.
