Degrees - Tough Trivia Questions

1. George Cole played 'Flash' Harry Cuthbert Edwards and Joyce Grenfell was Sgt. Ruby Gates in which 1960 comedy?

From Quiz
Arthur Daley to Terry McCann

Answer: The Pure Hell of St. Trinian's

Harry was a character Cole played in four "St. Trinian's" movies. In this, the third "St Trinian's" film, the school burned down and the girls were blamed for it. The sixth form was kidnapped, and it was up to the fourth form to come to their rescue.

2. Robert Montgomery and Joan Crawford starred in a film about a womanizing husband being taught a lesson by his wife.

From Quiz Robert Montgomery - Again and Again

Answer: No More Ladies

Released in 1935, "No More Ladies" also starred Franchot Tone and Edna May Oliver. Robert Montgomery and Joan Crawford made 7 films together.

3. Who won his first Oscar opposite Cagney and most memorably told the latter off at the end of the movie?

From Quiz Cagney & Co.

Answer: Jack Lemmon

Powell had his last film role in "Mister Roberts" as the kindly ship's doctor; ironically, Lemmon's frequent co-star, Walter Matthau, took Powell's role in the inferior sequel "Ensign Pulver". Fonda would have to wait until his last role in "On Golden Pond" to get his Oscar. His death at film's end goaded Lemmon to toss Cagney's palm tree overboard and ask the latter "Now what's all this crud about no movies tonight?" Classic!

4. Which actor appeared in both 'X-Men' and 'Jack and Sarah'?

From Quiz Twenty Five Degrees of Separation

Answer: Ian McKellen

He played Magneto and the Butler. I can't remember the Butler's name, if he had one.

5. Joyce Grenfell was Hortense Astor and Rex Harrison played the Marquess of Frinton in which movie from 1964?

From Quiz Arthur Daley to Terry McCann

Answer: The Yellow Rolls Royce

The movie chronicled the lives of three owners of a yellow Rolls Royce, from the Marquess of Frinton to Gerda Millet, an American millionairess, played by Ingrid Bergman. Joyce was the real life niece of Nancy Astor, who was the first female Member of Parliament in the UK. Joyce Grenfell died in 1979.

6. Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell starred in a film about a woman divorcing her unfaithful husband on the advice of her gossipy friends.

From Quiz Robert Montgomery - Again and Again

Answer: The Women

Released in 1939, "The Women" also starred Norma Shearer and Joan Fontaine. Rosalind Russell and Joan Crawford were in two movies together, "Forsaking All Others" and "The Women".

7. The 1955 Supporting Actor Oscar winner paired with quite a few famous actresses. Which one links him with fellow winner David Niven?

From Quiz Cagney & Co.

Answer: Shirley MacLaine

One of the early roles of Warren Beatty's sis was Princess Aouda in "Around The World In Eighty Days" opposite Niven's Phileas Fogg (Niven got the Oscar for "Separate Tables"). She later co-starred with Lemmon twice in Billy Wilder films: the Oscar-winning "The Apartment" and "Irma La Douce" (her Oscar was for "Terms Of Endearment").

8. Who appeared in both 'Jack and Sarah' and 'Withnail and I'?

From Quiz Twenty Five Degrees of Separation

Answer: Richard E Grant

He played the eponymous Jack, and either the eponymous Withnail or the eponymous I (I can't remember which).

9. In which 1977 movie did Rex Harrison play the Duke of Norfolk and Oliver Reed play Miles Hendon?

From Quiz Arthur Daley to Terry McCann

Answer: Crossed Swords

The movie was based on the story 'The Prince and the Pauper' by Mark Twain and featured two boys who looked alike. One was the heir to the throne and the other was a poor beggar. Like Henry the VIII, who was a character in the movie, Rex was married six times, and even though his wives were never executed their departures were similar - and in order were - divorced, divorced, died (leukemia), suicide, divorced, outlived. In 1989 he was knighted.

10. John Travolta played a rather special fellow in "Michael" in 1996. He wasn't even real - just a totally individual angel sort of guy. He was being pursued by a small group of journalists. Who played one of them?

From Quiz Sissy To Spacek

Answer: William Hurt

Hurt won his Oscar playing Molina in 1985's "Kiss Of The Spider Woman". Pretty risky for him to even take on that part! Actually, his whole career has been built on playing men being on the edge of things. An emasculated druggie in "The Big Chill" (1983), a grieving father involved with a kooky dog walker in "The Accidental Tourist" (1988), an offbeat scientist who gets carried away with isolation in "Altered States" in 1980, etc... The list is long. In "Michael" he played it pretty straight. He was just a cynical reporter in search of a story about this mysterious angel. I liked the movie! I might be one of the few who did. My feathers remained attached throughout it. I kept checking. Note: As Michael weakened his feathers fell off; just to make that reference understandable.
