Taglines from 1990s Movies Trivia Questions

1. "Get 'touched' by an angel" is the tagline of this comedy about a pair of angels attempting to re-enter Heaven.

From Quiz
Tantalizing Taglines

Answer: Dogma

Kevin Smith directs this uproariously funny comedy about a pair of angels, played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who are trying to get back into heaven. However, if the two enter heaven, the world will end. The tagline refers to a series of jokes in the movie that reference the asexuality of angels.

2. 'The fuse has been lit...'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines IV

Answer: Blown Away

Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones face off in this Boston-set action thriller about a bomb squad member with a dark past come back to haunt him. There's an elaborately fun set-up to trigger an explosion on a ship and Jones' dance steps are more than memorable. Forest Whitaker and Suzy Amis give memorable supporting performances.

3. 'Fighting crime on a budget. Fighting crime in his underwear. The world's biggest nerd is about to become its newest hero!'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines III

Answer: Blankman

Damon Wayans wrote and starred in this movie about an unexpected superhero. David Alan Grier and Robin Givens co-star.

4. 'The genius behind the music. The madness behind the man. The untold love story of Ludwig van Beethoven.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines II

Answer: Immortal Beloved

The exquisite Gary Oldman plays Beethoven, who dies and whose affairs must be taken care of by his secretary. The interpretation of 'immortal beloved' causes some distress, however, and the secretary must delve into the musician's love life and past to figure it out. Bernard Rose ('Candyman') wrote and directed the film.

5. 'In the end there are only two things that matter...'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines I

Answer: Love and a .45

Gil Bellows and Renee Zellweger starred in this thriller, playing criminals in love and on the run. The film was photographed by Tom Richmond, who later shot 'Waking the Dead' (starring Jennifer Connelly and Billy Crudup).

6. 'Flunk 'em if they can't take a joke.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines VI

Answer: PCU

Jeremy Piven plays a classic college guy in this joke movie set at a 'typical' liberal arts college.

7. 'Mostly all new jokes.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines V

Answer: Naked Gun 33 and a Third

Leslie Nielsen returns as Lt. Frank Drebin in this comedy flick. This time he goes undercover in a state prison.

8. 'Seven friends are getting away for a weekend in the country. Only six are coming back.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines - Most Loathed

Answer: Loaded

This is one of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen! Here's what I remember from it (keep in mind the effort it went through to repress all memory of the movie): A bunch of 20-somethings, one of who was a filmmaker, I think, went to a house in the country. The movie wasn't going well, so they did some acid, there was something with a swimming pool and flashbacks, possibly a baby brother drowned years ago, one of the guys got hit on his motorcycle by two of the others in their car (while high or drunk or under some sort of influence), they buried the motorcycle guy and went back to the city at the end of the weekend.

9. 'In the media circus of life, they were the main attraction.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines - Favorites

Answer: Natural Born Killers

Oliver Stone directed this incredibly violent film starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as serial killers in love. There are some very creepy scenes (Who am I kidding? The whole movie is creepy!) wherein the influence of mass media and popular culture on the killing sprees of the stars is made brutally obvious. Robert Downey Jr. plays a reporter who gets caught up in their whirlwind of violence.

10. 'One man is copying the most notorious killers in history.'

From Quiz 1995 Taglines V

Answer: Copycat

Sigourney Weaver plays the criminologist to Holly Hunter and Dermot Mulroney's cops in this suspense film. Harry Connick Jr. is satisfyingly creepy (how can people watch 'Hope Floats', having seen this?) as a jailed killer obsessed with Weaver.

11. 'The ultimate hard drive.'

From Quiz 1995 Taglines IV

Answer: Johnny Mnemonic

Keanu Reeves starred as a courier in this horrible sci-fi movie. I really don't have the words to describe how bad this movie is, and I'm a forgiving fan of Reeves'.

12. 'Terror goes into overtime.'

From Quiz 1995 Taglines III

Answer: Sudden Death

Jean-Claude Van Damme saves us from some terrorists in this hockey-stadium-set action flick.

13. 'When intimacy is forbidden and passion is a sin, love is the most defiant crime of all.'

From Quiz 1995 Taglines I

Answer: The Scarlet Letter

Demi Moore and Gary Oldman star in this cinematic version of the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel. The film was photographed by the same man who did 'Labyrinth' and 'Cliffhanger'.

14. 'In a world where nothing is what it seems you've got to look beyond...'

From Quiz 1995 Taglines - Favorites

Answer: The Usual Suspects

This awesome film stars Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, and Benicio Del Toro (with his own brand of indecipherable dialect).

15. 'Hello, I am Andy.'

From Quiz Taglines and Plots of 1999: The Return

Answer: Man On The Moon

This is a great look at the comedic genius, or complete wack-a-doo, Andy Kaufman.

16. 'Sometimes, you do believe what you see in movies.'

From Quiz Taglines and Plots of 1999: The Beginning

Answer: 8mm

A widow hires a detective (Nicolas Cage) to find out who filmed the violent pornographic images stored on an 8mm film reel she found in her husband's safe. His investigations soon put his life and sanity in danger.

17. Brad Pitt stars in this film about discontented, emotionally emasculated young men, the tagline of which is "Mischief. Mayhem. Soap".

From Quiz Tantalizing Taglines

Answer: Fight Club

An insomniac office employee (Edward Norton) and an eccentric soap salesman (Pitt) build a global organization, known as Fight Club, to help vent male aggression. Fight Club eventually blossoms into Project Mayhem, which, as the tagline suggests, specializes in causing mischief.

18. 'Game over... You lose!'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines IV

Answer: Brainscan

Edward Furlong plays a boy who gets involved in a virtual reality game which turns out to be not so 'virtual'. It's kind of fun if you can overlook the grossly bad acting.

19. 'Life's greatest adventure is finding your place in the circle of life.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines III

Answer: The Lion King

This Disney adventure starred a host of lions, a meerkat, a warthog, a monkey, and a hornbill. Young lion Simba witnesses his father's death and flees, feeling guilty. Years later he finds out that the pride he left (and should have been leading) has fallen upon very hard times under the leadership of Simba's evil uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons). Simba returns at the prodding of his now-mature childhood friend Nala to resume his place as leader of the pride.

20. 'They took him for a fall guy...but he threw them for a hoop.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines II

Answer: The Hudsucker Proxy

Tim Robbins plays an idealist chosen to take over a manufacturing company by its board of directors, with the intent that he run it into the ground so the board can buy the stock cheap and build it up again. Unfortunately, Robbins proves a bit more capable than the board had planned. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays a reporter on the story. Paul Newman leads the board of directors. The Coen brothers wrote (with Sam Raimi) and directed. Roger Deakins, the Coen brothers' longtime associate, photographed the film.

21. 'Some games you play. Some games play you.'

Answer: Princess Caraboo

23. 'Live every move as if it were your last.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines - Most Loathed

Answer: Intersection

This interminably slow movie stars Sharon Stone, Richard Gere, and Lolita Davidovich. Gere is married to Stone and having an affair with Davidovich, and must choose between the women.

24. 'Get ready for rush hour.'

From Quiz 1994 Taglines - Favorites

Answer: Speed

The movie that made Keanu Reeves a bona fide star. He plays Jack Traven, a member of the LAPD targeted by a bitter but crafty bomber (Dennis Hopper) because he botched what should have been an easy job for the bomber. Traven must save a busload of people during rush hour in Los Angeles, and the bus must stay above 50 or it will explode. Sandra Bullock plays Annie Porter, one of the bus's unlucky riders who ends up driving the bus. Of course, there is some romance between Reeves and Bullock (how else would they become sex symbols?).

25. 'Friends are the people who let you be yourself... and never let you forget it.'

From Quiz 1995 Taglines IV

Answer: Waiting to Exhale

This was a feel-good film about four black women's relationships with men. Stars included Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon.
