Daniel Plainview is a man of relentless ambition, fierce independence, and (seemingly) deep distrust of most people around him. In the opening sequence, Plainview is mining for silver in a man-made cave. He uses dynamite to set the silver loose, and when he re-enters the cave to retrieve it, he falls to the bottom and breaks his leg. This establishes one of his characteristic traits: for the rest of the movie, he limps as a result of the accident. Daniel Day-Lewis played this character fiercely to great critical acclaim, winning the 2008 Academy Award for Best Actor.

At the very beginning, Daniel Plainview is the name signed on the receipt ticket by the main character after the recovery of a good sized chunk of silver. This movie shows how his life is impacted based on the decisions he makes throughout a 30 or so year period during the oil boom in the U.S.

H.W. was actually son to one of Plainview's workers in his first drilling company, who died after an accident. Plainview adopts him as his own and uses H.W. as his business partner, conveniently giving himself the title of "family man" to gain credibility in his commercial ventures. The film intentionally makes some of these details murky (is H.W. really his son, or is he adopted?), so as to make Plainview's rejection of H.W. by the end of the film more shocking and unexpected.

Daniel Plainview, who is portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis, has a co-worker killed in the line of duty as an oil-worker. He then claims the boy as his own son as a gesture of good-will to the fallen worker and the boy himself. He uses H.W, the boy, as a tool to help him appear as a more gentle and trustworthy person in order to achieve his means of gaining land and drilling the oil that land may or may not contain.

Paul Sunday reveals to Plainview and his business partner, Fletcher, that there are oil deposits sitting underneath his family's property, the Sunday ranch. Paul visits Plainview's offices and shows him where the ranch is located on a map. Plainview is intrigued by the information and decides to head out there with H.W. His original plan is to purchase the ranch at bargain price, without mentioning the oil, but Plainview is slowed down by Paul's identical twin brother, Eli. Eli holds out for $5,000, which he wants to fund his own church. Paul Dano played both characters - Paul and Eli - but there is still debate about whether they were really twins, or just one person with multiple personality disorder.

For 500 dollars, Paul Sunday tells Daniel Plainview the location of this prospective oil find. Daniel then takes H.W. to hunt quail on the property to investigate the claim. The Sundays welcome then and are gracious hosts, not knowing what Daniel's real plans are and that they involve buying the land for "quail-prices" not for "oil-prices".

In actuality, there is no town or city called Little Boston in California (either then or now). Most of the film was shot on location on a ranch in Marfa, Texas. Additional shooting took place in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. In the movie, Plainview eventually purchases the Sunday ranch and then proceeds to buy property all around it, with the help of a local realtor. Plainview finds out about Little Boston when Paul Sunday shows it to him on a map (this happens during Eli's first and only visit in the beginning of the movie).

William Bandy, the lone hold-out of the deal that would give Daniel total control of the entire area that he's drilling and the entire path of the pipeline to the sea, just wants to speak to Daniel face to face to find out his plans. Daniel decides he can go around that particular piece of land so delays speaking with Bandy.

William Bandy is the most stubborn of the property owners in Little Boston. He doesn't acquiesce to Plainview until after the night Plainview kills Henry, the impostor masquerading as his half-brother. Bandy approaches Plainview the next morning by the campsite and seems to be aware of Plainview's crime. Bandy strikes a deal with Daniel, selling the property only after Daniel has agreed to change his ways (which he doesn't) and join the Church of the Third Revelation (which he does, at least for show). (Fun fact: the incorrect answer "Robert Wistel" is actually an anagram of "Robert Elswit". Elswit was the cinematographer for this film, for which he won the 2008 Academy Award.)

The man has Daniel's brother's diary and pictures of Daniel's mom, but he cannot produce the name of the farm that was next to their boyhood home. This man proves to be an impostor who met Daniel's brother in passing and assumed his identity. Knowing the truth but not with the ability to covey it to Daniel, H.W. attempts to kill this man. Plainview then finds out through the question not being answered properly, that this man is not really his brother and ends up shooting him near the middle of the movie.

H.W. loses his hearing because he is too close to the well when it explodes. Plainview has no idea what to do with his adopted son after the accident. At first, he brings doctors to Little Boston to treat him. Once it becomes evident H.W. will be handicapped for life, Plainview sends him to a boarding school for the deaf in San Francisco. Despite his deafness, H.W. eventually marries Mary Sunday, separates himself from his "father", and starts his own oil company in Mexico.

Eli Sunday is played by Paul Dano, who also plays the informant, twin brother Paul, who gives Daniel the location of the oil that is on the Sunday property. Eli sees why Daniel wants the land and asks for a $5,000 contribution to his church which Daniel agrees to, but never pays. Daniel is later convinced by William Bandy to join this church. Eli puts Daniel through an embarrassing ceremony as an initiation rite and as punishment for not paying the $5,000 he said he would contribute. This move will later lead to Eli's demise. You can also see Dano as the mute kid in "Little Miss Sunshine".

Plainview's alcoholism gets worse as the movie progresses and he ages. By the end of the film, when he has accumulated great wealth and is living alone in a lavish mansion, he frequently drinks himself into unconsciousness. When Eli Sunday returns to visit him in the mansion, Plainview is passed out in his bowling alley and must be awakened by his servant.

H.W. is shown near the end of the movie asking his father to split from their partnership so that he and his wife may move to Mexico and start their own business in the same field. Daniel is incensed at the thought of his own son being a "competitor" and disowns him. Mary is Eli and Paul's sister and has been beaten before by their father. Earlier in the movie, Daniel makes it a point to tell her those beatings will stop. We, the viewers are lead to believe they do.

This scene occurs when Eli asks Daniel to partner with him to drill the Bandy tract which he has purchased. Daniel then informs Eli that through drainage, he has already gotten all the oil and Eli has taken a heavy loss. After some vicious taunting Daniel gets his payback from the earlier events in Eli's church, by killing Eli.

There is little actual "blood" in the movie until this final, epic scene. Plainview's rage comes to the surface (much like the oil he had extracted from the ground throughout his life) and he chases Eli around the bowling alley, finally beating him to death with the pin.

He chases Eli down after he tries to run away and starts to strike him with a bowling pin. During the pursuit, Daniel does sling a couple of bowling balls at Eli, but in the end he kills him after striking him with the wooden bowling pin.
