From Quiz Billboard Number 1 Songs of 1966

Answer: The Sounds of Silence

"The Sounds of Silence" (later "The Sound of Silence")surprised Simon and Garfunkel when it hit the number one spot. It was originally recorded with just voices and guitar for their acoustic "Wednesday Morning, 3 AM" album. The album failed to have success, so Art returned to school and Paul went to England. Columbia producers decided the song may be a hit if they added electric instruments to it, so they had the session players for Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" remain and put bass, electric guitar and drums on the song. It received airplay and became a huge hit. Paul Simon wrote "Red Rubber Ball" for the British group The Cyrcle. "Turn! Turn! Turn!" was by the Byrds and Barry McGuire had number one success earlier with "Eve of Destruction."

Answer: the poor side of town

Johnny Rivers co-wrote "Poor Side Of Town" with Lou Adler and it turned out to be his one and only #1 song in November 1966. Rivers was born in New York City but moved to Baton Rouge, La. with his parents at the age of five. He formed his own band when he was thirteen, The Spades, and became a local legend. Born John Ramistella, he was given the "Rivers" handle by Alan Freed who auditioned him in 1957. His big break came after he moved to L.A. in 1961 with the recording of a live album "At The Whiskey A Go-Go" in 1963. He still records and tours today as a blues musician.

Answer: Homeward Bound

Simon and Garfunkel's follow up to "Sounds Of Silence", this song reached a commendable #5 on the charts. Altogether, they would have three #1 hits and eight top 40's before their split in 1971. Together, they would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990.

Frank Sinatra's career swooned somewhat in the late fifties and early sixties. This #1 hit, his first top ten recording since "Witchcraft" in 1958, signified that he was back - all the way. It was tempting to just provide the lyric "doo-be-doo-be-doo" but I resisted!

13. "Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again" The first #1 hit of 1966. It is?

From Quiz The Songs of 1966 - First Volume

Simon and Garfunkel's debut hit (although they did have a minor blip on the charts in 1957 - "Hey, Schoolgirl" as Tom and Jerry). To me, Simon was America's Poet Laureate of my generation.

From Quiz Remembering 1966

Answer: Hanky Panky

Tommy James and the Shondells recorded their version in Niles, Michigan and released it on local label Snaps Record. The song did well in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, but without national distribution, it quickly faded away and the band broke-up. In 1965 a disc jockey in Pittsburgh began playing the Shondell's version of "Hanky Panky" and the single became popular in the area. James traveled to Pittsburgh and hired a band to become the new Shondells, since he could not get the original members back together. After some TV appearances and local club dates, James went to New York and sold the master of "Hanky Panky" to Roulette Records. The label immediately released the single and it went on to top The Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in July of 1966.

29. "I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind 'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine I'll tell you right now Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find" This is it - the first ever psychedelic #1 hit.

Answer: Sunshine Superman

This would also prove to be Donovan's one and only #1 Billboard hit. In fact, tired of the music business and the jet-setting life style of a rock star, he abruptly retired in 1970. From being mentioned in the same breath as the Beatles and Rolling Stones, he moved his family to the deserts of California and lived "an alternative" lifestyle for close to twenty years. He has now emerged from this hiatus and his first studio album in years, "Beat Café", was released in the late summer of 2004.

30. "Set me free why don't ya babe Get out of my life why don't ya babe 'Cause you don't really love me" The name of this Supremes hit?

Answer: You Keep Me Hangin' On

The Supremes were in the midst of a hot streak in late 1966 - early 1967 with four consecutive #1 hits. This was the second one of the sequence following "You Can't Hurry Love" and preceding "Love Is Here And Now You're Gone" and "The Happening". Then they became Diana Ross and The Supremes and the "mojo" was broken. They would only have two more #1 hits in three years. In 1970, Ross went solo and The Supremes would never again have a chart topper. Incidently, Vanilla Fudge covered the song a year later and charted at #6 with it.
