Music from 1967 Trivia Questions

1. Which American singer-songwriter had a hit with "Ode to Billie Joe"?

From Quiz
Hits of 1967 - Part 2

Answer: Bobbie Gentry

"Ode to Billie Joe" (1967) was written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry. It can be found on her 1967 album of the same name. It got to number one in the US and Canada and number thirteen in the UK. In 1995 Sinéad O'Connor recorded a cover version of this song.

2. Which song by The Who, a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, contains the lyrics "I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise. I know that you have 'cause there's magic in my eyes"?

From Quiz Good Old 1967

Answer: I Can See for Miles

"I Can See for Miles" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in December of 1967. The song actually helped inspire the Beatles' song "Helter Skelter". After reading a Pete Townshend interview describing the Who song as "The most raucous rock 'n' roll, the dirtiest thing they'd ever done" McCartney, in an interview with Mojo magazine in 2008, said "I went into the studio and told the guys, 'Look, I've got this song, but Pete said this and I want to do it even dirtier.' It was a great brief for the engineers, for everyone-just as fuzzy and as dirty and as loud and as filthy as you can get it is where I want to go. I was happy to have Pete's quote to get me there."

3. Which American royal sounding gentlemen had a US number one hit with "Kind Of A Drag"?

From Quiz That Was The Year That Was: Pop Music 1967

Answer: The Buckinghams

"Kind Of A Drag" was written by James Holvay. It was number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Buckinghams in 1967. It did not chart in the UK. The Buckinghams were Carl Giammarese (guitar), Nick Fortuna (bass), Dennis Miccoli (keyboards), John Poulos (drums) and Dennis Tufana (vocals). "Kind Of A Drag" was to be The Buckinghams' biggest hit and only US number one. They made the Billboard Top 20 another four times in 1967 and after a minor hit in 1968 that was it for them.

4. At the top of the chart were the Beatles, with a song which contains the line "Nothing you can sing that can't be sung". Name the song.

From Quiz My Birthday Top Ten - 1967

Answer: All You Need Is Love

"All You Need Is Love" was first heard on the first ever global television link, "Our World", on 25th June 1967, seen by 400 million people in 26 countries.

5. Which pair sang a version of "Jackson" that reached Number 14 in 1967?

From Quiz US 1967 Top Forty Singles with One Word Titles

Answer: Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood

"Lady Bird" and "Jackson" were two Top Forty singles by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood. "Jackson" made it to Number 14 and "Lady Bird" peaked at Number 20. "Some Velvet Morning" went to Number 26 the following year. After signing with her father's Reprise label in 1961 Nancy Sinatra released "Cuff Links and a Tie Clip" which failed to chart. Four years later she still had not charted a Top Forty single. She connected with Lee Hazlewood who wrote "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" which became a 1966 smash hit. The team continued to collaborate on projects for Nancy as well as duets. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was a 1967 Top Twenty by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Sonny and Cher took "The Beat Goes On" to Number Six. "It Takes Two" by Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston hit Number 14.

6. "Dedicated to the One I Love" was a Number Two hit for The Mamas and Papas in 1967. What distinguished this song from earlier releases by the band?

From Quiz Summer of "Love"

Answer: It was the first hit song on which Michelle Phillips sang lead.

"Dedicated to the One I Love" featured Michelle Phillips singing lead vocals for the first time on a Mamas and Papas US Top Ten hit. The other members of the band backed her during various sections of the song. Michelle had parted ways with the band in 1966 but rejoined later the same year. The following year Mama Cass belted out a version of "Dream a Little Dream of Me", a song that Michelle had introduced to the band. The song was released as performed by Mama Cass with the Mamas and the Papas. By the time "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was released Mama Cass was already expressing a desire to become a solo artist, but remained with the group until they officially disbanded in the early seventies. Producer Lou Adler used studio musicians such as keyboardist Larry Knechtel, drummer Hal Blaine and Joe Osborn on bass on most of the recordings by the Mamas and Papas.

7. Can you tell who is singing about this girl on a certain day, from these lyrics? "When you change with every new day Still I'm gonna miss you"

From Quiz Whose Line Was It Anyway? US Number One Hits 1967

8. Who recorded the 1967 hit "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron"?

From Quiz Ipod Shuffle 06: 1967 Billboard Top 100 Part 1

Answer: The Royal Guardsmen

A mere four weeks after the publication of the first Snoopy comic featuring the Red Baron, The Royal Guardsmen released this vinyl hit in 1966. 9. Which song was a US Top Forty 1967 instrumental hit by Davie Allan and The Arrows?

From Quiz Lesser Known Top Forty Hits of 1967

Answer: Blues' Theme

Davie Allan started his professional career in the early sixties playing Surf music in southern California. In 1964 he became a session guitarist for a subsidiary of Capitol Records called Sidewalk Records. While with the label he formed The Arrows. The group released some Surf style music on the label with little success until they were asked to provide a song for the soundtrack of a movie titled "The Wild Angels" (1966). "Blues' Theme", also occasionally listed as "Blue's Theme", was used for the opening credits of the movie and the single charted at Number 37 the following year, remaining on the charts for 17 weeks. The soundtrack album for the film also fared well on the charts. The group followed up with themes for other movies, but none did as well as "Blue's Theme". "A Banda (Ah Bahn-da)" and "Casino Royale" were Top Forty singles by Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass. "The Dis-Advantages of You" was a Number 36 instrumental release by The Brass Ring.

10. Please complete these lyrics from the bridge section of Scott McKenzie's 1967 hit song "San Francisco": "All across the nation, such ___________, people in motion...."

From Quiz Pop Music Hits of 1967

Answer: A strange vibration

Scott McKenzie, born Philip Blondheim, reached the top five on the U.S. singles charts with the song "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)." This song perfectly captured the "Summer of Love" feeling which permeated pop culture in 1967. McKenzie sang these words: "All across the nation, such a strange vibration People in motion There's a new generation with a new explanation People in motion, people in motion..."

11. Who was dancing and doing cartwheels in this lighter song? "I was feeling kind of sea sick The crowd called out for more"

From Quiz Whose Line Was It Anyway? UK Number One Hits 1967

Answer: Procol Harum

"Whiter Shade Of Pale" was performed by Procol Harum. It was number one for six weeks on the UK chart and reached number five in the US. (I have no idea what it is about but it is on my favourite 60's song list). The Doors got to number 49 on the UK chart with "Light My Fire" in 1967. It was re-released in 1991 and reached number nine. It was a number one on the US chart. Pink Floyd reached number six with "See Emily Play" on the UK chart in 1967. It never charted in the US. Strawberry Alarm Clock never had a UK chart hit but reached number one in the US with "Incense And Peppermints" in 1967.

12. The Monterey International Pop Music Festival was a three-day event. Which act, known for their hits "Windy" and "Cherish" was the opening act for the three day festival?

From Quiz Monterey Pop Festival

Answer: The Association

The Association kicked off the festival, an event some heralded as the beginning of the "Summer of Love". "Along Comes Mary" broke The Association nationally in 1966 and by the time they played at the festival their follow up hit, "Cherish", had already peaked at number one. Along with the festival founders The Mamas and The Papas, members of the Beatles and the Beach Boys were on the board of directors. The Beach Boys were originally scheduled to perform but declined at the last minute citing the fact that they were busy recording their "Smile" album. Producer Lou Adler and Beatles publicist Derek Tayler were also involved in the project.

13. The week of February 18, 1967, saw a number one song by a Chicago-based band called "Kind of a Drag." Who took the song to number one?

From Quiz Billboard Number 1 Songs of 1967

Answer: The Buckinghams

Originally known as the Pulsations, the band enjoyed local success on Chicago station WGN-TV's "All Time Hits Show." At the suggestion of a station employee they changed their name to reflect the band names of the British Invasion. Jim Holvay and Gary Beisber of the Chicago band The Mob wrote "Kind of a Drag" and offered it the the Buckinghams. It entered the Hot 100 at number 90 and took five weeks to hit the top. They left their small USA label, signed with Columbia Records and went on to have success with songs such as "Susan" and "Don't You Care?" It would be a while before the band Chicago hit the top of the charts. Blues Magoos had a number five hit the same week with "(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet." The Seekers held down the number four slot with the theme from the movie "Georgy Girl."

14. "Respect" was a number one hit for which female soul singer?

From Quiz Hits of 1967

Answer: Aretha Franklin

"Respect" by Aretha Franklin was a number one hit in the US and got to number ten in the UK. It was originally recorded by Otis Redding in 1965, his version only reaching number 35 in the US charts.

15. "And if I tried, I know she'd say I lied" is a lyric from the song that was number 1 in the British charts the week that I was born. Name the song this lyric comes from:

From Quiz Pop Music from 1967

Answer: "Silence is Golden" by The Tremeloes

The lyric is from "Silence is Golden" which was number one in the UK when I was born in May of 1967. This song spent a total of 15 weeks on the chart, 3 of them at number 1. The three incorrect answers were also all number one hits on the UK chart during 1967.

16. "We'll keep on spending sunny days this way We're gonna talk and laugh our time away I feel it coming closer day by day Life would be ecstasy, you and me endlessly" The title is?

From Quiz 1967 - Groovin'

Answer: Groovin'

The Young Rascals would have their second #1 hit with this song. It topped the charts for a couple of weeks, was dislodged by Aretha's "Respect" for two weeks, then bounced back to the top for a couple of weeks more. The group was much in demand at the time and Felix Cavalliere and Eddie Brigatti wrote the song when they recognized that the only time they saw their girlfriends was on Sundays.
