Ryne hit his only playoff home run in Game 1 of the 1989 NLCS against Scott Garrelts of the San Francisco Giants. That was the first night postseason game at Wrigley Field. Sandberg's home run came in the bottom of the 3rd inning as the Cubs cut the Giants lead at that point 4-3. Unfortunately, that was the game Will Clark hit a grand slam off Greg Maddux as the Giants won 11-3. Clark was overwhelming for the Cubs to handle as he hit .650 in that NLCS and was the series MVP. The Giants beat the Cubs in five games. But Ryne, too, had a great series as well. He hit .400 off San Francisco pitching.
