Billy Bonds joined Charlton as a 15 year old and played for them between 1964 and 1967 before joining the east end club. Many West Ham fans regard him as one of their own, forgetting that he was a product of the Charlton youth system. Bonds played more than 790 games in all competitions for the Hammers over 21 seasons and lifted the FA Cup for them as captain n 1975 and 1980.

Frequently considered the greatest ever game to grace the hallowed turf at Wembley, Charlton came from behind numerous times to defeat Sunderland 7-6 on penalties after a dramatic 4-4 draw (3-3 before extra time). Clive Mendonca, who grew up in Sunderland and was Charlton's top scorer for the season, scored a hat-trick against the side he supported as a youngster. Charlton central defender Richard Rufus also scored - the first goal of his career. The penalty shoot-out consisted of 14 penalties. The first 13 were all scored by right footed players. The first left footed player to step forward was Michael Gray who took penalty number 14. It was saved by Sasa Ilic who it goes without saying became a hero, one of many of that afternoon.

Tutt didn't blame Finney, accepting that the collision was entirely accidental.

Bartlett scored two headers on his debut first putting Charlton 1-0 ahead and in the second half giving hope to the home crowd by scoring to make it 3-2 to United. The South African international also had earlier hit the upright with a diving header as the Addicks dominated in the first twenty minutes. Welsh international John Robinson later swerved and scored to equalise for Charlton. The match is also noted for Ryan Giggs hitting the cross-bar from the half-way line with Solskjaer scoring from the rebound. This gave the Manchester side a 2-1 lead a matter of seconds after Giggs had equalised, and moments before half-time.

After leaving the Valley he was in the Liverpool squad that won the League Cup Final and lost the FA Cup final in 2012. He joined Swansea City in 2013 and then Newcastle United in January 2016.

Charlie Wright was serving in Hong Kong during his national service in 1960, and was called up to play for Hong Kong in a world cup qualifying match. During the game he saved a penalty and the game ended in a goalless draw. The Hong Kong FA gave him their Footballer of the Year award in recognition of his performance. Wright, a Scotsman, was one of Charlton's most popular players of the 1960s, known for his erratic behaviour such as sitting on the crossbar when the ball was at the far end of the field, or walking behind his goal to chat with fans. There is even a story that he accepted a cigarette from a fan at one time.
