Super Friends Trivia Questions

1. Which Super Friend is introduced in this series?

From Quiz
Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Firestorm

In the opening theme he flies by and it says "Introducing: Firestorm". Plastic Man was never in this series. He was a special guest in the 1973-1974 series of "Super Friends". Black Vulcan was introduced in "The Challenge Of The Super Friends" in 1978. Cyborg was introduced in the 1985 series called "The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians".

2. In the first episode, "The Power Pirate", what was the name of the Scotland Yard inspector who helped the Super Friends try to discover the reason behind the critical power outages?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: Sir Cedric

Sir Cedric was, in fact, the Power Pirate. He was actually an alien from an energy-depleted planet that hoped to use the energy he stole to replenish his homeworld. Naturally, the Super Friends helped him out, and restored everything back to normal.

3. In the episode "Invasion of the Ferians", the Ferians come from the Planet Venus to try to take over the Earth. Which member of the Legion of Doom made contact with the Ferians and worked with them to attempt this?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Captain Cold

Captain Cold (voiced by Dick Ryal) was working with the Ferians. It seems strange that a villain whose gimmick is a freeze gun would collaborate with aliens from a world where the surface temperature is over 800 degrees Fahrenheit. On the plus side, the three-headed design of the Ferians we see is pretty cool. The Ferians will conquer the Earth once it is hotter, damper, and with more vegetation. Captain Cold first uses a large scale version of his freeze gun to freeze several locations including San Francisco and New York City. When Flash (voiced by Jack Angel) uses his super speed to melt the ice, a large amount of steam is released into the atmosphere. Black Manta (voiced by Ted Cassidy) starts a fire on the surface of the ocean that heads towards an inhabited island. When Aquaman (voiced by Bill Callaway) uses a tidal wave to put out the flames, a large quantity of sea water travels inland. When Sinestro (voiced by Vic Perrin) puts comets on a collision course with Earth, Green Lantern (voiced by Michael Rye) moves the Earth out of the way. These three actions make the Earth hotter, wetter, and more covered with wild vegetation. It is also worth noting that the opening sequence for each episode referred to the Legion of Doom members coming from remote galaxies. In reality, at least 10 members were native to the Earth. Only Brainiac, Sinestro, and possibly Bizarro (also voiced by Bill Callaway) are from other planets. It is unclear whether this Bizarro is from Bizarro world or an attempt by Lex Luthor to clone Superman.

4. Which two Super Friends can be seen in the opening theme, but were NEVER featured in a episode?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Aquaman and Flash

Aquaman and Flash both had a special scene in the opening theme song, but that's all we ever saw of them. They were never in a single episode. Hawkman was never in this series or the theme song. Both the Wonder Twins and their pet sidekick Gleek were featured in the theme song and the series. So were Robin and Black Vulcan.

5. "Professor Goodfellow's G.E.E.C." caused quite a bit of trouble, forcing the Super Friends to call in the help of another hero. Who was this hero?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: Plastic Man

The Goodfellow Effort Eliminating Computer took control over almost every manual labor task in the world, to the point where even the Super Friends seem unnecessary. Unfortunately, a small mouse had other plans for the computer: namely it wanted to chew the wiring. In order to get the little fellow out safely and restore order, Plastic Man is brought in to pull the mouse out and return everything to normal.

6. In the episode "The World's Deadliest Game", Wonder Woman, Black Vulcan, and Hawkman find themselves trapped in a giant game. What type of game is it?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Pinball

The three heroes find themselves in a giant pinball machine. At one point, Wonder Woman finds herself inside a ball inside the game. Because the game is located in an area of extreme gravity, the heroes are unable to simply fly out of the game. In this episode, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, and Black Vulcan (voiced by Buster Jones) are helping to repair a NASA satellite. Brainiac (voiced by Ted Cassidy) uses a magnetic device that makes it appear the Earth has vanished. Toyman (voiced by Frank Welker) then intercepts a Justice League radio message and with his voice disguised as Superman leads the Three Super friends to a faraway planet located in a black hole. Several super heroes were created for the "Superfriends" cartoons in an attempt to increase the cultural diversity of the show. Black Vulcan was not exactly created for the show. In the 1970s an African-American character who could manipulate electricity called Black Lightning was created by DC Comics. Due to an internal dispute at DC, Black Lightning was not available for use in "Superfriends". Black Vulcan was created as a close substitute.

7. In the episode "Reflections In Crime", what villain do the Super Friends battle?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Mirror Master

He used mirror reflections to capture the Super Friends. Samurai comes to the rescue in this episode. Darkseid, Brainiac, and Lex Luthor were all featured in this series, but were not featured in this episode.

8. In the episode "Uncle Mxyzptlk", what color of kryptonite turns Superman into a bratty kid?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Red

The Wonder Twins Zan and Jayna along with their pet sidekick Gleek found it at a construction site. They brought it back to the Super Friends hang out, the "Hall of Justice". Samurai explains that red kryptonite has a weird effect on Superman. It can make him stronger, weaker, or it can make him younger. Mr. Mxyzptlk made two appearances in this series. This episode was one of them. The other episode was called "Mr. Mxyzptlk And The Magic Lamp".

9. In the episode "The Trial of the Super Friends", The Legion of Doom temporarily capture several pieces of equipment that belong to the Super friends. What is not an item that they capture?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Black Vulcan's Lightning Bolt

No object is taken from Black Vulcan during the episode. Cheetah takes Wonder Woman's Magic Lasso when she tricks Wonder Woman into lassoing a rocket powered Cheetah decoy. Brainiac is able to use a vacuum-like device to take Green Lantern's Power Ring. The Scarecrow uses trained crows to assist him in taking the utility belts from Batman (and Robin). Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern are then captured by the Legion of Doom and forced to battle android duplicates created by Brainiac (voiced by Ted Cassidy) who are armed with the power devices. Of course, being Superfriends are heroes are still able to defeat the androids and the Legion of Doom. This is partnered with a second plot line involving the theft of liquified light from a remote science research facility. On a side note, the Legion of Doom would have probably been better served selling the effective teleportation device that was successfully demonstrated several times in the episode rather than trying to steal the liquid light and fight the Superfriends.

10. In the episode "Island Of The Dinosoids", which Super Friend escapes Doctor Dan Corwin's fortress and saves the day?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Apache Chief

Apache Chief escapes from Doctor Dan Corwin's fortress. Doctor Dan Corwin uses a horrible ray that turns people into dinosaurs. He used it on the Super Friends. Apache Chief hooked up with Robin and Ronald Raymond. They found a way to get back into the fortress and saved the other Super Friends as well as help put everything back to the way it should be.

11. What was the name of the device that Dr. Shamon and Leila La Bon created that could pull comets from space and change the elements in their tails to gold?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: The Shamon U

"The Shamon U" also extracted other elements from the comet tails, which caused Earth plants and animals to grow and shrink at amazing rates. The Super Friends had to mount a major effort to prevent too much chaos from breaking out.

12. What did Lex Luthor have in the episode "No Honor Among Thieves" that helped him capture the Super Friends?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Power suit

Lex Luthor had a special power suit that let him fly around and cause trouble for the Super Friends. He worked with Darkseid in this episode. He later betrayed Darkseid. Darkseid would have the last laugh on Lex Luthor. When Lex stole the Super Friends' powers, Darkseid told Lex that he also has their weakness. He dumped kryptonite dust on Lex. Kenner's toy line of Super Powers action figures made a figure for Lex in his power suit. The funny part is that this is the only episode where we see him in his power suit.

13. In "Too Hot Too Handle", what other Super Friend helped the team stop an alien from over-heating the Earth so it would be a perfect place for his race to live?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: The Flash

The Flash was voiced by Ted Knight in this episode, as he was in the three cartoons he starred in on "The Aquaman/Superman Hour" in the sixties. The Flash reversed the alien's magnetic effects by running around the world thousands of times at super-speed with a cable, countering the effects and returning everything to normal. He and the Super Friends also went to the alien's homeworld and got rid of all the pollution there. Somehow, they didn't think to do that on Earth as well ...

14. In the episode "The Village Of Lost Souls", which Super Friend destroyed Brainiac's octopus-like space ship?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Apache Cheif

Apache Chief comes to the rescue again! Wonder Woman was trapped by the Wonder Twins who were under Brainiac's mind control device. Apache Chief was the only hope. He said his super special words "Inyuk-chuk" and grew several hundred feet tall and grabbed Brainiac's ship. Green Lantern and Superman were never featured in this episode.

15. What was the name of the super-villain who escaped a special prison built by Superman so he could put the Man of Steel on trial for crimes against him?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: The Raven

The Raven was featured in "The Menace of the White Dwarf". Wendy and Marvin acted as Superman's defense council in the 'trial'. The only thing that could disrupt the Raven's white dwarf power was a special spore from Superman's destroyed home planet, Krypton.

16. In the episode "Darkseid's Golden Trap", what is Darkseid planning on buying at the 532nd Annual Intergalactic Underworld Auction?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Gold kryptonite

Gold kryptonite is the strongest of all types of kryptonite. One touch of it by Superman and his powers are gone forever. Darkseid wanted to get it to defeat the Super Friends once and for all. Darkseid did end up getting it, but he didn't win it at the auction. He tried to use it on Superman. But El Dorado used his powers to make Batman look like Superman. When Darkseid gave it to Batman nothing happened. Darkseid was very upset that he had been tricked again by the Super Friends.

17. What episode began with a talking albatross warning seaside factories to stop polluting the seas before they struck back?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: Dr. Pelagian's War

Pelagian, who had been believed to be dead, thought that only he could save the oceans of the world. He had the ability, like Aquaman, to telepathically control sea life, and could control the oceans themselves. Wendy and Marvin saved the day when they pointed out the long-term ramifications on his scheme.

18. In the episode, "Revenge on Gorilla City", Gorilla Grodd uses a brain control device to control the inhabitants of Gorilla City. Who is the legitimate leader of Gorilla City?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Solovar

Solovar was the leader who made the decision to previously banish Gorilla Grodd. He later escapes the city after Gorilla Grodd's takeover and seeks help from the Superfriends. Strangely in this episode, Solovar sounds very similar to Green Lantern. When the Superfriends attempt to defeat the Legion of Doom the first time, several of the Superfriends are captured. The Legion of Doom uses a "depowering" device on them that, among other things, takes away the Super speed of Flash and neutralizes the utility belts of the Dynamic Duo. Roman, off all villains, trains the hypnotized gorillas to be soldiers and they begin conquering nations. In this episode we learn that Gorilla Grodd's home is Gorilla City which is located somewhere in Central Africa (along the banks of the Congo River).

19. Who is Darkseid's son?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Kalibak

Kalibak is definitely Darkseid's son. He called him father in practically every episode. Desaad is Darkseid's cowardly advisor. He makes all of Darkseid's inventions. Brainiac is an android and Mirror Master has no relation to any of them.

20. What powered the device known as the Planet Splitter?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: A giant diamond

"The Planet Splitter" was created by Dr. Le Bon, who wanted to split the world in half to get to its precious minerals. This episode also recaps the origin of Superman, which is told to the renegade scientist by Wendy and Marvin.

21. In the episode "Swamp of the Living Dead", the Superfriends encounter zombies before they were fashionable. What method do the Superfriends use to stop the zombies?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Tie them to dead trees with dead vines

With the limits on cartoon violence in the 1970s, it is unlikely that the Superfriends could have used any of the other methods. How painful and ironic for the Legion of Doom that the Superfriends had to save them from the zombies. The Legion of Doom discovered a witch travelling through the swamp where the Hall of Doom is located. After they confront her, the witch conjures a devil-like being who promises a source of great power to the Legion of Doom. In return, the Legion of Doom must trap the Superfriends in the swamp. The power of Evil the Legion of Doom receives turns out to be an army of zombies from the swamp. When the Legion of Doom became too greedy, the devil-like figure turned the zombies on the Legion of Doom. The old witch informs the Superfriends how to defeat the zombies. At the very end of the episode, it is strongly hinted that the witch and the devil-like being are the same person.

22. In the episode "The Wrath Of Brainiac", what Super Friend does Darkseid order Kalibak to take with him back to Apokolips?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Wonder Woman

Darkseid has a school boy crush on Wonder Woman. He's always trying to marry her. He'll go for any chance he can get to snatch her. Of course it was the Wonder Woman android that Kalibak grabbed. Darkseid wasn't too happy about that. An interesting side note about this series is that the first episode was "The Bride Of Darkseid". He tried to marry Wonder Woman in that one. Another interesting fact is that this is the first episode were we see Brainiac's new chrome colored body. He explains the change to Darkseid. He also shows a computer image of how he used to look. What's funny is the opening theme shows Brainiac in his old body. He appeared two times in this series and never once in his old body. Brainiac has a golden yellow brain in this series. His octopuss-like space ship has a golden yellow brain as well. In the 1985 "Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians", both Brainiac and his ship have a chrome colored brain.

23. What was the name of the super-plastic that was created by King Plasto?

From Quiz The Super Friends

Answer: F.R.E.R.P.

F.R.E.R.P. stood for 'Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Resin Plastic', and could be shaped by King Plasto into any form, from a tugboat to a robot goose. The Super Friends met the 'King' at a charity golf event, and once again the words of Wendy and Marvin played a big part in ending his reign.

24. In the episode "Conquerors of the Future", one of the Superfriends makes an appearance in his secret identity and not in uniform. Which one?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Green Jordan (Hal Jordan)

The episode opens on a Paris subway line. Hal Jordan stands in a train car reflecting that he is glad that he can take some time off and relax on vacation. Of course the train almost immediately has a problem. While Superman was shown on "Superfriends" as Clark Kent and Batman at least interacts with Alfred the butler, I do not believe Flash was ever shown out of uniform in any "Superfriends" episode. The main storyline involves the Legion of Doom travelling approximately 2000 years into the future. The Earth of 3984 CE has most of humanity living in walled cities (at least the ones we see) and fighting off attacks from beings called Barlocks who have some strange powers. (It is unclear whether the Barlocks are mutated humans or aliens from another world.) The Legion of Doom joins forces with the Barlocks to take over first the Earth and then to begin conquering other planets in the galaxy. The Superfriends are eventually able to defeat the Legion of Doom after they get past the Riddler's red herring of traveling 10,000 years into the future (1,978 + 10,000 = 11,978 approximately) and facing off against a giant spider-like creature. I give the writer of this episode credit for at least sending the villains and heroes into the future and not having to worry about the grandfather paradox.

25. Who was the first to notice that Captain Mystery was really a teenager named Sidney Wanamaker in the episode "The Mask Of Mystery"?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Firestorm

Firestorm was on his way to Sidney Wanamaker's house to study for school. He noticed Sidney flying out the window. Sidney used a magic belt that he made after reading Batman's plans on the Super Friends computer which he tapped into. The belt gave him the ability to fly.

26. What is the name of the school that Ronald Raymond attends? (NOTE: For those of you that don't know, Ronald Raymond is Firestorm's secret identity.)

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Fairmont University

You can see the Fairmont University sign in the episode "The Bride Of Darkseid", plus the narrator mentions the name in the episode. It's a special scene that shows the teenage side of Ronald Raymond.

27. In the episode "Fairy Tale of Doom", Toyman has invented a machine that can transport you in the universe of a work of fiction. Which story does not have a Superfriend and Legion of Doom member visit it during this episode?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

The key to this question is to remember that the episodes of "Challenge of the Superfriends" first aired during the 1978 television season and "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was not published until over a decade later. The episode opens with Toyman exploring the world of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". After coming out of the story, he informs the rest of the Legion of Doom that if you do not leave the world of the story within twelve hours you are stuck there forever. Using the machine Toyman leads Hawkman into "Jack and the Beanstalk". A memorable moment of this subplot is when Hawkman--who has the power of flight--chooses to climb the beanstalk in pursuit of Toyman. Cheetah leads Wonder Woman into "Alice in Wonderland" (properly "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland") Brainiac leads Superman into "Gulliver's Travels". (properly "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships". On second thought, I get why they abridged that title.) While the three Superfriends are initially trapped in the stories, the other Superfriends are able to trick the Legion of Doom into helping get them out of the stories. The idea of transporting into a work of fiction is a nice switch from going backward or forward in time or travelling to a parallel universe. I wonder which other stories the episode could have also used?

28. The last episode of the series was called "The Curator". Which Super Friend was able to escape the Curator's spell and save his friends?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: Samurai

Samurai used his invisibility power to avoid getting caught by the Curator. Samurai waited until The Curator's back was turned and saved the day. Green Lantern wasn't in this episode. Firestorm and Batman had been turned into statues; they were no help.

29. In the episode "The Case Of The Dreadful Dolls", which Super Friend saves the team from certain doom?

From Quiz Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

Answer: El Dorado

The Super Friends were battling the evil Dollmaker. The Dollmaker was originally named the "Toyman". You can see in this episode that the name of the toy factory was called "Big Shott's Toy World". Winslow Schott was the Toyman. Notice how the sign of "Big Shott's Toy World" is missing the "c" in Winslow Schott's last name. This is clearly an artistic mistake. El Dorado was hung like a puppet but managed to turn on the sprinklers and melt all of Dollmaker's evil magic mud. Once the water from the sprinklers melted the magic mud dolls, the Super Friends were free from his mind control. On a side note to all action figure collectors, this was the series that launched the Kenner Super Powers Collection. Thirty-four action figures were produced. The third series has been the hardest to find. Collectors pay top dollar for them.

30. In the episode "Superfriends: Rest in Peace", the Legion of Doom uses a device called the "Noxium Crystal" to eliminate the Super friends one by one. Who created this device?

From Quiz Dedicated to Conquest of the Universe

Answer: Dr. Natas

Early in the episode, Lex Luthor states that Dr. Natas created the Noxium crystal. Dr. Natas was only described as being a past member of the Legion of Doom. He was the only member ever described this way. Spell Natas backwards and you can see how Hanna-Barbera was skirting the edge of what was acceptable in the 1970s. This episode is interesting because it suggests that the Superfriends can actually die. While they may not use the words "die" or "death", it is heavily implied. The episode opens at Batman's funeral. How do we know it is Batman's funeral? The large "bat-shaped" grave marker with the words: "Batman died Dec. 1978". He was killed by the Riddler using the Noxium Crystal. The Noxium Crystal includes an element that is lethal to each of the Superfriends. For Superman, it is kryptonite. For Green Lantern, it is yellow radiation. It is not stated what the lethal element is for the other Superfriends. One by one the other Superfriends are eliminated. Once they are gone, the Legion of Doom throws the Noxium Crystal away. This is a big mistake. Shortly thereafter, a person in a gray and white full-body suit retrieves the Noxium Crystal and sends it into deep space to never return. The Superfriends then reappear. It turns out that the Legion of Doom killed android duplicates of the Superfriends. Some people people feel that this is a cop-out for the episode. I feel that it is still a scary episode for the young children that would probably have been the target audience for "Challenge of the Superfriends".
