PC Games Mixture Trivia Questions

1. What do you need to do to win the "Persistence" badge in the PC game "Great Adventures in the World of Sky" (2020)?

From Quiz
'Great' Video Games

Answer: Die frequently

The "Persistence" badge is awarded after you die one hundred times in the game. Training dragons earns you "Dragon Trainer Talent". Finishing all the main tasks wins "Free Heart". Completing the "Mushroom Soup" branch task earns you "Kind Boy". "Great Adventures in the World of Sky" is a first-person RPG game designed by Chinese programmer Xiao Zheng Ge, released in April 2020.

2. 1990's "Pharaoh's Tomb" had you playing as archeology research assistant Nevada Smith, the name a clear play on Indiana Jones. The title of the first episode in the series was a play on an Indiana Jones movie. What was the episode called?

From Quiz Old School Computer Games

Answer: Raiders of the Lost Tomb

Nevada Smith is described in the story to the first episode as being the research assistant to a certain archeology professor, though no mention who that may be. In the first episode of the sequel series, "Arctic Adventure", the name is given as Dr. Jones, strengthening the idea that "Pharaoh's Tomb" and its sequel are based on the then-three "Indiana Jones" movies. This Dr. Jones even hands Nevada a .38 revolver for his next adventure, replacing the spears you use in the first series. Interestingly producer Apogee's hint sheet for "Arctic Adventure" listed Nevada Smith as the student of Indiana Jones. Designed by George Broussard and developed by Micro F/X Software, "Pharaoh's Tomb" was originally published by Lone Star Micro on November 8, 1990 as "Pharaoh's Pursuit" as a single eighty level game. Broussard took the game to Apogee Software (now 3D Realms) where it was released a little over a month after the Lone Star Micro release date as "Pharaoh's Tomb". The Apogee release divided the game into four episodes; "Raiders of the Lost Tomb", "Pharaoh's Curse", "Temple Terror", and the final episode being "Nevada's Revenge". Each episode was twenty levels long. An interesting bit of trivia on "Pharaoh's Tomb", Broussard is noted as being possibly the only video game designer to completely design and program a game on their own and then misspell their own name in the credits. Opening screens read "Program Coding and Design by George Broussad".

3. One of the oldest computer games was "Bertie the Brain" (1950). Which children's game could one play on "Bertie the Brain"?

From Quiz If It Wasn't For...

Answer: Tic-Tac-Toe

"Bertie the Brain" was exhibited at the 1950 Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. The machine stood approximately 13 feet tall and displayed the game with a grid of lightbulbs. Despite this, the player's opponent was an artificial intelligence and players entered plays with a keypad that had nine possible choices. The role of "X" was always assigned to the "Computer Brain" and the role of "O" was assigned to the "Human Brain". Where does this game fit into the history of video games? It was unquestionably an electronic game and probably would be considered a computer game in the sense that one played against the computer. Whether it meets all of the requirements of a video game is more debatable, though it seems to meet some of them. (See the conclusion of this quiz for more thoughts. "Bertie the Brain" was designed by Josef Kates (1921-2018) to showcase his newly invented Additron Tube, which was ten times more efficient than the radio tubes that were used in some of the earliest computers. The increasing popularity of transistors (that were more efficient still) limited the use of Additron Tubes for commercial use. In 1952, Christopher Strichey's "OXO" would take the concept one step further and display a game of Tic-Tac-Toe as a visual on a computer screen.

4. In which series of video games can you play the Global Defense Initiative (a fictive UN program) or the Brotherhood of Nod, led by a mysterious person only known as Kane?

From Quiz World Wide War Games

Answer: Command and Conquer: the Tiberian Series

Westwood Studios developed both "Command and Conquer" series mentioned here, and implied that "Red Alert" would be a sort of prequel to the Tiberian series. When Westwood Studios went bankrupt, Electronic Arts inherited and continued the franchise (but strayed from the initial storyline). In the very first "Command and Conquer" (also known as "Tiberian Dawn"), scientists have picked up a new sort of resource: tiberium ore, which replenishes itself and is easily converted into cash. The United Nations form the Global Defense Initiative, to figure out peaceful applications for this new ore. But a mysterious man named Kane forms the Brotherhood of Nod, a faction that tries to monopolize the tiberium ore and goes for world dominancy. Further instalments were "Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun"; "Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars"; and "Command and Conquer: Tiberian Twilight". After an expansion pack to "Tiberian Dawn", Westwood released "Command and Conquer: Red Alert", in which the NATO fight the Soviets. Later instalments were "Red Alert 2" and "Red Alert 3". The "Battle for Wesnoth" lets the player pick one of several factions in a medieval fantasy setting: Rebels (mostly elves), Knalgan Alliance (predominantly dwarves), Loyalists (humans, including mages), Northerners (orcs, goblins, and the like), the Undead (zombie-like creatures) and the Drakes (dragon-like creatures). "Scorched 3D" is three-dimensional artillery game.

5. What is the name of the third installment in Sega's turn-based "Total War" series, a game with two expansions and a successor released in 2013?

From Quiz War-Themed Strategy Video Games

Answer: "Rome: Total War"

"Rome: Total War" was one of Sega's bestsellers at the time. It was the third game in the "Total War" series, preceded by "Shogun" and "Medieval". It has two expansions: "Barbarian Invasion" and "Alexander", although its successor, "Rome II: Total War", generally held less supportive reviews from game critics than its predecessor.

6. The setting is the planet Azeroth. You can choose to be either a part of the Alliance (humans or dwarves), or part of the Horde (orcs or trolls). Which MMORPG is this?

From Quiz Worlds of War

Answer: World of Warcraft

The "Warcraft" franchise began as an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game in 1994 with "Warcraft: Orcs & Humans", created by Glenn Stafford, Gregory Alper, Rick Jackson, Chris Palmer through Blizzard Entertainment and Interplay Entertainment. As a player you can enter one of four realms: -Normal (player vs. environment) - completing quests, fighting monsters, etc. -PvP (player vs. player) - completing quests, fighting monsters, AND competing with other players -RP (role-play) - a variant of PvE where players role-play in character -RP-PvP - as above, but interacting with other players "World of Warcraft" is the fourth release in the franchise, coming out in 2004. The storyline continues four years after the events of "Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne". In nine years after the "WoW" release, several expansions have also been released to accompany the game: "The Burning Crusade" (2007), "Wrath of the Lich King" (2008), "Cataclysm" (2010), and "Mists of Pandaria" (2012).

7. What no-longer-playable 2007 MMORPG by General British (Richard Garriott) featured aliens and first- and third-person shooter elements?

From Quiz You'll Never Play on This Server Again!

Answer: Tabula Rasa

Richard Garriott has been making MMOs and RPGs in general since the early 1980s, mainly in his "Ultima" franchise, and as such he's become a major name in the role-playing genre. Not all of his creations have been hits, however; "Tabula Rasa" was highly anticipated in a time where most MMOs (including "World of Warcraft") were just getting firm footing. When "Tabula Rasa" finally released in 2007, however, after six years of development, it somewhat flopped. NCSoft pushed Garriott (who was in outer space at the time...seriously) out of the project and closed the servers a year and a half later due to dwindling player totals. The game, about aliens and gunfights, and Garriott's departure sparked a lawsuit in which NCSoft was forced to pay the producer for his ousting.

8. Arguably one of the world's most popular PC game series is this one, set in the fantasy world of Azeroth where players can do battle against huge monsters and delight their inner role-player. Which series is this?

From Quiz Let's Keep It PC

Answer: World of Warcraft

'World of Warcraft' is classified as a MMORPG, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players are able choose a faction, a race and a class when creating their characters, before they are let out into the world of Azeroth where adventure awaits. With its array of expansions adding new continents and a wealth of new content, 'World of Warcraft' has long reigned over PC gaming thanks to its millions of devoted fans.

9. What kind of game was "Duke Nukem"?

From Quiz PC Video Game History

Answer: Side-scroller

The first "Duke Nukem" was created by Apogee Software back in 1991. One of my favorite memories from this game was the ability to shoot a turkey leg and have it suddenly turn into an entire turkey so that you could get full health. However, if you made the mistake of shooting a coke can, it would destroy it. So... just like in real life!

10. What color is the background when you play "Solitaire"?

From Quiz Computer Games to Fight Boredom

Answer: Green

All of the card games included in the Windows package come with a green background. This makes sense as most card tables have green felt, giving you that Vegas feel while playing.

11. Which resource in "Starcraft" is collected in a similar fashion to gold in "Warcraft III"?

From Quiz Blizzard Games

Answer: Vespene Gas

Gold and Vespene Gas are collected in a similar fashion in that they both come from a mine. Only one worker can be in the mine at one time, so there is an optimum number of workers to have on any given mine depending on the distance between it and the main building. In "Warcraft III", gold is the primary resource while in "Starcraft" it is the secondary. The wood in "Warcraft III" and the minerals of "Starcraft" also have similar gathering methods.

12. "Sam & Max Hit the Road" was developed by LucasArts in which year?

From Quiz General PC Gaming Trivia

Answer: 1993

The main characters in this game are a Dog and a Rabbit.

13. One of the best real-time strategy (RTS) games ever is "Warcraft II". Who designed this game?

From Quiz Top 10 Computer Games Selection

14. Sierra Studios had a lot of success with their whacky adventure game series, and had a character who was a little sleazy misfit who couldn't keep out of trouble. What was his name?

From Quiz PC Computer Games History

Answer: Leisure Suit Larry

15. What is the setting for the 2020 game "Great Alchemist"?

From Quiz 'Great' Video Games

Answer: Euroba

"Great Alchemist" was designed by Steve Clay and released in February 2020. It is a classic match three type game. The background for the game is the year 1346, when the Black Plague did wipe out much of Europe. It is set in a place called Euroba. Each puzzle is centered around a different patient with the plague. You must solve the match three challenges to "cure" the patient. Challenges increase in difficulty in higher levels of the game.

16. In "Amazon Trail", what species is the Inca king who appears to the main character in their dream in the opening and instructs them as to which items to bring to his lost civilization?

From Quiz Retro PC Games Trivia

Answer: Jaguar

The player communicates with the Inca King through by means of this jaguar, who will inform the player as to the next item the king desires. All such items - displayed on the menu screen as they are acquired - are required to complete the game. Otherwise, the player's journey will be a failure. The first item asked of is always Cinchona to cure a Malaria epidemic.

17. This game, set in the fantasy world of Tyria, claims to be unique in that player actions affect the ongoing storyline. What is it its name?

From Quiz A Walk Through Online Worlds

Answer: Guild Wars 2

The premise of the game is that five Elder Dragons sleeping underground have awakened and seized control of Tyria. Players begin the game by creating a character with a customized biography that is intended to provide a personal story that guides the character's path through the game. The personal story guides the character through a series of instanced chapters in which their life and adventures are explored. Players choose from five main races and eight professions to build their character. The character's race determines which of five cities in Tyria they start from. In the core story, characters ally with one of several major organizations dedicated to fighting the Elder Dragons. The game's website explains that instead of "a traditional questing system," unique dynamic events occur in each area that respond to the player's actions, the outcomes of which have a ripple effect on the environment.

18. In 1952, Christopher Strichey was able to successfully program the Manchester Mark 1 computer to play a game. Which simulation of a board game was the player able to play?

From Quiz If It Wasn't For...

Answer: Checkers/Draughts

Christopher Strichey (1916-1975) first developed the idea for a computer program that could play checkers/draughts in 1951. His first attempt was done on the Pilot ACE (Automatic Computing Engine) (1950) at the National Physical Laboratory in the United Kingdom. The program utilized the full memory of the mainframe at the time. Attempts to play the game in 1951 were unsuccessful because of programming errors. By late 1951, Strichey had gained access to the Manchester Mark 1 computer, which had significantly more memory. Access to a programming handbook for the computer compiled by early computer programmer Alan Turing assisted Strichey. By 1952, the computer could execute the program and play the game at a reasonable rate of speed. The game would be one of the first to display its visuals on an electronic screen, meeting another part of the definition of a video game. The Manchester Mark 1 computer (1948-1949) was located at Victoria University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

19. Which game asks you to find the hidden colour combination in the least guesses?

From Quiz Welcome to the Windows App Store

Answer: Master of Mind

There are some free Mastermind type games available. "Master of Mind" is recommended for the age group 3+. Six difficulty levels are determined by the number of pegs to guess (four or five) and the number of available colours. The game is available in single player modus and in dual player modus. Oddly enough, I've found "Master of Mind" at the subcategory Casino Games. The red herrings listed in this question obviously do belong there, but I would be tempted to look for "Master of Mind" in another subcategory - puzzle games, perhaps.

20. "Dana Hee?" "Pomus!" These were some of the mumbo-jumbo shouts the villagers in the first instalment of a great strategy game uttered. In which game did Egyptians, Babylonians and Choson (Korean) villagers resort to such incomprehensible gibberish?

From Quiz World Wide War Games

Answer: Age of Empires

"Age of Empires" was developed by Ensemble Studios, a small game development studio later purchased by Microsoft. In 1997 the first instalment of "Age of Empire" was released, with a dozen nations to pick (from Phoenician to Yamato). In skirmish mode one started out with a few villagers who had to build a town centre, gather food and resources, and train warriors and specialised people. Object was to lead one's faction from the stone age into the iron age, despite possible enemy invasions. The series continued with an expansion pack ("Age of Empires: the Rise of Rome") and two later instalments ("Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings" in a medieval setting, and "Age of Empires III" in a Renaissance/ European exploration setting). Although based upon historical themes, the game could take different paths as real history did - for instance, Egyptians could fight Yamato (Japanese), while in real history these people probably never met. "Computer Bismarck" was a simulation of the last battles of the Bismarck during the Second World War. No Egyptians or Babylonians in sight here. "Stonkers" was a real-time strategy game for the ZX Spectrum only (and has never been released for Windows PC). "Final Fantasy" is a successful series of role playing games.

21. What is the name of the 2004 dual RTS and turn-based strategy game, based on a series of board games of the same title?

From Quiz War-Themed Strategy Video Games

Answer: "Axis & Allies"

"Company of Heroes" does not have a dual RTS and turn-based interface, "March of the Eagles" does not have RTS elements, and "Risk"'s video game version was not released in 2004. Also, the original board game did not feature a RTS mode.

22. What three-letter word is used for the 'Ages Beyond Myst', an MMO game in the popular point-and-click adventure series by Cyan World which closed its servers in 2008?

From Quiz You'll Never Play on This Server Again!

Answer: Uru & Uru Live

Although the best-selling "Myst" series saw great popularity in the 1990s and in its later sequels, rich with then-top-of-the-line graphics, ambient music, and hellishly difficult puzzles, "Myst Online: Uru Live" never picked up steam. Although the game had a fun single-player component, the game never really sustained itself for multiplayer play. The servers closed after one year (in 2008) and, surprisingly, Cyan brought it back as a free-to-play title on new servers in later years (as "Uru: Live Again"). The game was well-praised, but some criticized it for being nothing more than a really pretty chat room. Maybe the puzzles were too hard?

23. Early adopters of the Windows operating system were introduced to one of the first PC-based casual games, "Solitaire." Which variant of Solitaire was used in version that came with Microsoft Windows 3.1?

From Quiz Let's Keep Things Casual

Answer: Klondike

Card games are the most popular form of casual game. The explosive popularity of online gambling games such as "Texas Hold 'em" and Blackjack are included in this variety of game, along with classic favorites including "Klondike", "FreeCell" and "Pyramids".

24. This version of "Solitaire" is scored. How many points do you get for putting a card into one of the top foundation stacks (those are the stacks at the top where you start with an Ace and go up to King)?

From Quiz Computer Games to Fight Boredom

Answer: 10

The scoring system was added to give players a real challenge and to motivate you to do better. Watch out, the game is timed and if you start taking too long, you actually start having points deducted from your score!

25. In "Diablo II", the characters use mana to power special abilities. What is the "Starcraft" equivalent?

From Quiz Blizzard Games

Answer: Energy

"Diablo II" and "Warcraft III" each use mana to power spells, while the "Starcraft" equivalent is energy. Energy is used by many units in "Starcraft" and used to perform basic abilities such as Lockdown, Psionic Storm, Cloaking (which, when active, slowly depletes the user's energy), and others. Energy, like mana, is slowly replenished over time, and many units can have their total energy reserves boosted.

26. Another pioneering game series also by Sierra studios was the "Kings Quest" series. Who authored the game stories?

From Quiz PC Computer Games History

Answer: Roberta Williams

Roberta Williams introduced the "Kingdom of Daventry" in 1984. No less then 8 "Kings Quest" games were produced.

27. What color is the main player character in "Great Ball of Fire" (2019)?

From Quiz 'Great' Video Games

Answer: Blue

The main character is blue in his mortal state, then turns bright orange in fire mode to kill birds. In a mixture of "Donkey Kong' and "Angry Birds" the player must travel through a landscape and turn into a ball of fire to kill evil birds. The game was released for PC in April 2019, and designed by Brazilian brothers Daniel and Gabriel Noronha.

28. In "Arcade America", where is the player's final destination?

From Quiz Retro PC Games Trivia

Answer: Woodstock

Joey makes his way on this epic road trip from the West Coast, first visiting the prison Alcatraz, followed by Las Vegas and many other cities, as he makes his way to Woodstock in Upstate New York. Each pit stop (stage) features one of his monster friends and an item associated with them. The player must collect all such items to achieve the best ending.

29. Harry Potter fans are familiar with wizard's chess, but which game could possibly have been an inspiration for the author?

From Quiz Old School Computer Games

Answer: Battle Chess

It's only supposition that J.K. Rowling could have heard of, or even played, "Battle Chess", but the game does have some similarities to wizard's chess.
