Jennifer is the main protagonist, during the game she is referred to as the "unlucky girl" or as "the poor unfortunate girl". The goal of the game is that Jennifer must remember a promise that she's made but to whom and what promise entails is revealed throughout the game in the storybooks you receive.

Every storybook in the game represents the people in the Orphanage including Gregory, Clara, Mr. Hoffman, and the girls in the Red Crayon Aristocrats but the main theme of each storybook is centered around one or two characters, such as The Bird Of Happiness representing Eleanor. The goal in The Rag Princess Sews chapter is to find Joshua the Bear, which Amanda has stolen. While trying to find Amanda, you find a glass case that has her diary in it. The diary gives frightening insight into Amanda's mind, as she writes about how much she dislikes Jennifer. When you find Amanda she's beating a doll that is almost identical to Jennifer, and she gives Jennifer Joshua the bear in hopes of being able convince the Aristocrats that Jennifer stole Joshua the Bear.

(page two) It's the first story book you get while playing the game. When you're on the bus a small boy named Joshua begs you to read him the story. He runs off the bus before your character can read it to him and she exits the bus with the storybook in hand and chases after him.
