Wolfenstein Trivia Questions

1. What color are the walls in the first floor?

From Quiz
"Wolfenstein: 3D: The MS-DOS Version"

Answer: Blue

Blue walls are found in almost every level of the game.

2. What is the FULL name of the hero 'B.J.'?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: William Joseph Blazkowicz & William Joseph Blaskowicz & Blaskowicz & Blazkowicz

Blazkowicz' full name can be found on page 12 of the manual of "RTCW" in the bottom section of 'Wolfenstein Lore'. His nickname, B.J., is probably derived from his first and middle name, 'B' probably standing for Bill (short for William) and 'J' standing for Joseph.

3. The three 'Nocturnal Missions' are actually prequels. What Nazi scheme must you thwart?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Chemical warfare

The nocturnal missions (actually, episodes four, five, and six) involve your character assassinating a scientist who is creating the chemical weapons, seizing the plans, and killing the general in charge of the chemical warfare. While the use of gas warfare was prevalent during the First World War, there was almost no use such weapons in the European theater during the Second World War.

4. What time period does this game take place in?

From Quiz "Wolfenstein: 3D: The MS-DOS Version"

Answer: World War II (1930's or 40's)

In almost, if not every level, there are pictures of Hitler and Swastikas hanging on the walls.

5. The map 'Fuel Dump' was the first map to be released as a multiplayer demo. What was the second map released as a demo version before the release of the full version?

From Quiz Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Answer: There was no other map released

Only 'Fuel Dump' was released as demo. It served the developers to improve and tweak the game before the original release and give gamers the chance to taste the game as they did with releasing 'Beach' for "RTCW". One very big improvement made with the full version of "W:ET" was the updating of the unit sounds, especially the Axis sounded terrible in the demo.

6. What rank does B.J. hold?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: Captain

Blazkowicz' rank is Captain. It's also found on Page 12 of the manual.

7. Stages one and stage five end with you fighting a hulking soldier, either Hans or Gretel. They are brother and sister. What is their last name?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Grosse

Hans and Gretel Grosse are armed with two enormous chain guns and are very difficult to kill. In 'Wolfenstein's' sequel, 'The Spear of Destiny,' you fight a boss named 'Trans Grosse,' who wears spiky, green armor.

8. At the beginning of the game, it goes through a sky blue screen that gives the games rating. What was it?

From Quiz "Wolfenstein: 3D: The MS-DOS Version"

Answer: PC-13 (Profound Carnage)

This is found just before the title screen. There is a little white box in the bottom right where this is found.

9. What kind of weapon is the 'Venom Gun'?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: Minigun

The 'Venom Gun' is a weapon to be feared. It's a powerful minigun that can literally tear your enemies (or yourself if wielded by the opponent) apart. Its drawback is the fact it gets overheated, it needs some spin-up time and it's rather inaccurate. A skilled soldier can take out a minigunner with a well-placed headshot before he has the chance to hit you.

10. When the game was released by Nintendo in the US, what change was NOT made to 'soften' the game?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Removal of the 'death cam'

This game was recalled in Germany, as it is illegal to display swastikas and other Nazi emblems, even when belonging to the 'bad guys.' Nintendo was somewhat notorious for removing violence from violent games. They not only removed all Nazi images, including swastikas, the 'Horst Wessel Lied' as background music, and Adolf Hitler as the final boss, they removed the graphic blood and the attack dogs. Apparently it was okay to kill people, but not dogs.

11. "W:ET" features several changes compared to "RTCW". One new class has been introduced, existing ones expanded and one class from "RTCW" has been renamed. The new name for this class is 'Field Ops'. What was the name of this class in "RTCW"?

From Quiz Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Answer: Lieutenant

The Lieutenant class was renamed to 'Field Ops' because of the introduction of the ranking system. Players gain Experience Points (XP) and advance in rank, hence the class needed to be renamed. It would be kinda strange to have "Lieutenant Private Blitzwing" so the new class says "Field Ops Private Blitzwing". He has maintained his abilities. He still drops ammo packs for his teammates and can call in airstrikes and artillery strikes for which he is equipped with Binoculars by default. By using those skills frequent and effectively he can also increase that skill (the Signal Skill) resulting in mega ammo packs (which replenish two clips instead of one), increased support fire (two planes instead of one with an airstrike and a longer lasting artillery strike), the ability to deploy support fire quicker (which means the power bar doesn't need to be fully charged anymore to deploy them) and finally if his skill reaches the highest level he gains the ability to spot enemy Covert Ops in disguise and relay that info to teammates. A Field Ops is extremely important as he can replenish the ammo for his teammates (be aware that dropped ammo picks can be picked up by either side as well though). On some maps you might find ammo cabinets on the map but usually they aren't found and the only way to get ammo is either from a Field Ops or picking up dropped weapons from slain soldiers.

12. How many Sub-Machine Guns are available in Single Player?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: 3

There are 3 Sub-Machine Guns: the MP-40 (standard Axis SMG), the Thompson (standard issue Allied SMG) and the Sten Gun (silenced SMG). The FG-42 Paratrooper Rifle is NOT a SMG but an Assault Rifle. There are no dedicated Machineguns in the game, btw, save for the mounted MG-42's .

13. In one level in the third episode, you hear Morse code in the background. Translated, it's your orders to assassinate Adolf Hitler. By what code name are you addressed?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Big Bad Wolf

A coded message from 'Little Red Riding Hood' informs you that you must eliminate Hitler within 24 hours. Hitler is the final boss on the level. He attacks you wearing a mechanized suit of armor. When his armor is blasted off, he swears in German. The real Adolf Hitler died of a self-inflicted gunshot in late April of 1945, shortly before the Russians took Berlin.

14. This game has many modifer packs (mods). One of the most popular is based on an old cult classic video game of the early nineties. What was it?

From Quiz "Wolfenstein: 3D: The MS-DOS Version"

Answer: "Mortal Kombat"

The "Mortal Kombat" mod transforms all of the enemies into fighters from the game. The weapons become Raiden's shock, and the wall posters become characters and the dragon symbol. Beleive it or not, there is a "Spongebob Squarepants" mod available.

15. The Field Ops and Covert Ops have binoculars by default. Other classes can obtain them as well by increasing in a certain skill. How can they obtain binoculars?

From Quiz Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Answer: By reaching Battle Sense Level 1

Skills are a new feature for "W:ET". Performing certain actions can improve XP for certain skill types and at a certain amount you gain a level for that skill. Going up in level with a skill is always rewarded with a reward and often associated with a promotion in rank. There are two common Skills for all classes, Battle Sense and Light Weapons. The rewards for gaining a level in these skills is the same for all classes. Each class also has a class specific skill which is increased by using the class' special ability. The Medic has the First Aid skill which increases everytime he uses his healthpacks to heal others or revives fallen teammates. The Engineer has the Engineering skill improved by planting dynamite at objectives or battlefield constructions or disarming dynamite or mines from the opponents, making kills with landmines and constructing battlefield constructions. The Field Ops has the Signals skill which can be increased by handing out ammo to teammates or by making kills with support fire (destroying vehicles like tanks or trucks also counts as a kill). The Soldier has the Heavy Weapons skill which is associated with his two handed weapons (Soldiers can't use SMGs). Note that other classes also can advance in Heavy Weapons by using emplaced MG-42s. Should a class other than Soldier gain Heavy Weapons Level 4 by using such weapons he can achieve the ability to pick up dropped heavy weapons from a dead Soldier class player. The Covert Ops has the Covert Operations skill which includes sniping and disguising himself as an enemy by stealing uniforms. XP and gained skill levels with rewards carry over to the next map when you play in campaign mode. When playing exceptionally long campaigns it's possible to max out all skills and possibly attain the rank of General. This element makes it enourmous fun to play Campaigns. You are rewarded with binoculars when you reach Battle Sense Level 1. You can increase your Battle Sense XP by being active in combat. You get 2XP for every 30 seconds that you have inflicted damage. You get 5XP for every 30 seconds that you inflicted and received damage and 8XP for every 30 seconds that you make kills and receive damage. Battle Sense Level 2 increases your fitness causing your stamina bar to recharge 160% of the normal rate. Battle Sense Level 3 improves your health, giving you 15 more Hit Points and Battle Sense Level 4 gives you the ability to spot traps (land mines). Unlike the Covert Ops you can't relay that information to your teammates. If Covert Ops spot landmines with their binocs all teammates are alerted and the mines mapped on your command map. If a soldier with Battle Sense Level 4 spots one it isn't but of course he can still warn the rest of the team by using the teamchat ('y' button).

16. How many Potato Mashers (stickgrenades) can you carry around in Single Player?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: 15

You can carry up to 15 Potato Mashers and Pine-apple Grenades. You can carry up to 10 dynamite charges and 4 Grenades is the maximum amount for Soldier Class in Multiplayer (The Medics and Lieutenants can carry 1 and the Engineer can carry 8).

17. There are nine levels per mission, plus one secret level. One secret level transports you into which video game?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: 'Pac Man'

If you find the secret level on the third episode, you're transported into a 'Pac Man' maze, pursued by four ghosts. The halls are lined with treasure and health bonuses, but you cannot actually harm the ghosts in any way. Each secret level is reached by an elevator discovered in a secret room.

18. At the end of "Episode 1," a giant man, Hans Grosse, says something in German. What was it?

From Quiz "Wolfenstein: 3D: The MS-DOS Version"

Answer: Guten Tag

He says this right as he opens the door and attacks. Guten Tag: Good Day Auf Wiedersehen: Goodbye Hallo: Hello Trottel: Moron

19. What is the maximum amount of 9-mm rounds that you can carry around at one time in Single Player?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: 372

The correct answer is 372! You can carry up to 300 in clips on your belt. But there are also bullets in your Luger Pistol, MP-40 and Sten. If all are fully loaded you have 300 + 8 + 32 + 32 making up for a total of 372 rounds, not 300. 32 are the number of rounds in one MP-40 clip and 96 is the number of extra rounds you can carry around in Multiplayer, when using a MP-40.

20. Which boss does not actually kill your character?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Dr. Schabbs

Dr. Schabbs has created a legion of mutant warriors that you must fight in the earlier levels. When you confront him, he hurls hypodermic syringes at you. If you die, your avatar does not collapse in a bloody heap as usual. Instead, the blood disappears and your skin turns grey: you are now a mutant.

21. "Wolfenstein" is a significant name to the series. What exactly is it the name of?

From Quiz "Wolfenstein: 3D: The MS-DOS Version"

Answer: A castle

The newest installment is entitled, "Return to Castle Wolfenstein." The original version, for Atari in 1983, was called "Castle Wolfenstein: The Beginning." This was an updated version of the game.

22. Which class gains a Flak Jacket when achieving the highest level (level 4) for his class specific Skill?

From Quiz Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Answer: Engineer

The Engineer receives a Flak Jacket when reaching Level 4 of the Engineering skill. Flak Jackets deflect 50% of the damage taken by the Engineer wearing it, making him more hard to kill and give him more time to complete his objectives (planting dyno or creating battlefield constructions for example). Achieving Level 1 gives the Engineer increased number of explosives at respawn (8 handgrenades and 8 riflegrenades when using the K43/M1), Level 2 allows the Engineer to plant or disarm dyno and landmines in half the normal time and Level 3 improves his ability to construct battlefield structures, planting and disarming dynamite and land mines by using 1/3rd less Power Bar charge than normal. Once the Power Bar reaches the bottom, the progress gets very slow.

23. How many Silenced weapons are there available in Single Player?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: 4

There are 4 weapons that can be classified as Silent weapons. Those are the Luger 9-mm with Silencer, the Sten SMG, the OSA Snooper Rifle (Garand Sniper Rifle) and last but not least your trusty old knife.

24. What was the codeword to the aborted contest that Apogee Software had planned? (you find it in a secret room)

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Aardwolf

On mission two, you can open a series of 181 hidden rooms. In one room you find the message 'Call Apogee and say 'Aardwolf.'' This was originally an idea for a hidden contest. Within days of the game's release, however, cheats and game codes were released on the net, and it was possible to find the message with no effort. The contest was cancelled, though for years later, hopeful gamers would still call the software company, hoping they were the first.

25. One weapon that had been available in "RTCW"s singleplayer part only made its way into the multiplayer part of "W:ET". Which weapon is this?

From Quiz Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Answer: FG-42 Paratrooper Rifle

The FG-42 Paratrooper Rifle was designated as an Assault Rifle in "RTCW" and was very powerfull. In the real world it's more something between Sub-Machine Gun and Assault Rifle. It packed the powerfull German 7.92mm cardridge which was also used in the K98 Mauser and had a decent firing rate and a scope. This weapon was probably a player favourite in the singleplayer campaign but for balance reasons was left out in the multiplayer part. The Tesla Gun never made it's way into multiplayer part and the MG-42 was not available as portable weapon in "RTCW" at all, just as gunemplacements. The OSA Snooper Rifle did not make it's way into "W:ET". It had been left out of "RTCW" multiplayer part as well for balance reasons. The M1 Garand Silenced Sniperrifle in "W:ET" is a lot like it, the Snooper was also a modified M1 Garand but the OSA Snooper Rifle was unique because of it's scope that allowed some sort of night view. The sniper rifle in "W:ET" does not have this.

26. What nationality were B.J.s parents?

From Quiz "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"

Answer: Polish

According to the "RTCW" manual (yep, the famous page 12), B.J. was born to Polish Immigrants. That info was taken from the hint book to the original Wolfenstein 3D.

27. The sixth boss is a general named Fettgesicht. What does that translate to in English?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Fat Face

That's German for 'Fat Face' and boy does he have one. Another boss, Otto Giftmacher, is German for 'poison maker.' A knowledge of high school German can reveal some funny hidden jokes. The general says 'rosebud' when he dies. Hitler swears and bids goodbye to Eva. Otto says 'A little American!' when he first sees you.

28. In what year was the game "Wolfenstein 3-D" released?

From Quiz "Wolfenstein: 3D: The MS-DOS Version"

Answer: 1992

They have created a new "Wolfenstein" game for the past two decades. The 80's brought us "Castle Wolfenstein" and "Beyond Castle Wolfenstein," two simple platform games released in 1983 (C.W.) and 1984 (B.C.W.). The 90's brought us "Wolfenstein 3-D," a revolutionary FPS (First-Person Shooter) released for MS/DOS in 1992. The 2000's brought us "Return to Castle Wolfenstein," a very well made game with a great plot and excellent graphics released for Playstation 2, XBOX, and PC in 2003.

29. What reward does Light Weapons Level 4 give?

From Quiz Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Answer: Dual Pistols

Achieving Light Weapons Level 4 gives a player the option to wield dual pistols instead of one, just like the dual .45 Colt in "RTCW" singleplayer part. Level 1 gives the player an extra ammunition clip on spawn, Level 2 decreases the reload enabling you to reload 35% faster and Level 3 increases your accuracy with small arms by reducing the bullet spread of SMGs by 35% and reducing the recoil of pistols with 50%. There is no reward or what so ever that makes increases your firing rate. If you encounter someone with an exceptional rate of fire that person is probably using cheats (though lags sometimes can make it appear that some people fire faster than others).

30. Which boss appears more than once, in various hidden rooms and secret levels?

From Quiz 'Wolfenstein 3D' (MS DOS): Did You Ever Notice?

Answer: Hans

Hans Grosse appears several times, once in the maze of secret passages in mission two, and more than once in secret levels. Whenever you meet him, he says 'Guten Tag!' (good day!) in a happy voice. He calls out for mommy when he dies. His sister, Gretel, shouts 'No trespassing!'
