Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What might be a common reaction of an experienced servant to a cat when the vet tells them they need to give the cat a course of pills?

Answer: Trepidation.

The fear and panic is most intense among cat servants who might be experienced but have not yet been properly trained. Novices may not feel the proper degree of terror, due to their ignorance of the nature of the imminent catastrophe. Properly trained and experienced servants may experience no more than marked apprehension.
2. On arrival home from the vet with the cat with a bottle of pills in hand, the cat's assistant would be well advised to do which of these?

Answer: Secure the house to prevent the cat from getting out.

The cat is not stupid, and will be well aware that a pill may be in its near future after a visit to the vet (especially if it is not feeling well). Since the cat knows best, it will a) prefer to treat itself by eating grass, outside, and b) head for the great outdoors anyway, in order to distance itself from any prospective pill-giving. Nor will it come when called back, since obedience is not part of a cat's character.
3. An inexperienced cat minion who attempts to give the cat its pill without proper preparation will NOT experience which of these results?

Answer: Calm, incident-free consumption of the pill, followed by a request for a treat.

Ill-advised attempts to give a cat a pill on an 'ad hoc' basis, without the necessary preparations, have been the topic of numerous amusing (to onlookers) essays, anecdotes and emails. Substantial damage has been done to those who serve the cat, homes, and finances.
4. Before preparing their feline mistress (or master, as the case may be) for their pill, how should the cat's servant prepare himself or herself to serve?

Answer: Put on thick, strong clothing and leather gloves.

Any reasonably substantial top with long sleeves will do (preferably not brand new), and the gloves need not actually be leather, but should be quite strong. Ideally, the gloves should have the fingertips cut off, to facilitate handling of the pill.
5. The experienced cat's underling will know that the master (or mistress) must be respectfully and comfortably but firmly restrained in order for the pill to be administered successfully. Which of these methods can be confidently recommended?

Answer: Calmly and firmly wrap the master or mistress in a towel, so that no limbs can escape.

Sweet talking your feline overlord into being wrapped up can work surprisingly well in some cases, but a very firm hand is needed in others. It is important to arrange a tight (but not strangling) closure around the neck, so that no clawed forepaw can work its way out with the head, and to have the tail end also firmly closed to prevent the master or mistress from exiting the wrappings backwards. Aim for a 'papoose' effect, with only the head exposed.

Trying to hold a determinedly reluctant cat by the scruff will only demonstrate just how flexible a cat can be. Holding a cat by the legs, or trying to feed it anything alcoholic is actually dangerous to the cat.
6. The pill may be physically administered in a number of ways. Which one of these is least likely to work?

Answer: Hiding the pill in the cat's food.

With one possible exception (see question 10), attempting to hide a pill, a powdered pill, or a dissolved pill in any food or drink will most likely result in a wasted pill, because your cat will not touch it. While persuading your cat to swallow a pill, gently rubbing the throat while holding the mouth closed is recommended. The water 'chaser' works well, but can be a little messy.
7. Upon delivery of the pill the inexperienced lackey at once lets the cat go. Why might this be an elementary error?

Answer: The cat may not have swallowed the pill

Many cats will successfully pretend to have swallowed the pill, only to spit it out immediately on being released. Further attempts to get the pill back down exhaust its servant and increasingly annoy the cat. If the lackey has allowed the cat to leave the house, it may not be possible to approach the cat for several hours.
8. Following administration of the pill, what behaviour does the typical cat FIRST want to see from their unpaid employee?

Answer: Maintenance of a respectful distance.

One must understand that the feline master or mistress's dignity has been affronted. A little distance is necessary, to allow them to recover their poise and self-esteem. This will be accomplished quite quickly if one has just a little patience.
9. On completion of the first stage of recovery, what will probably best please the little master, or mistress, and incline them toward forgiveness?

Answer: A peace offering of the frosty feline's number one favourite food or treat.

In addition to being a suitable method of currying favour, and after feline equilibrium has been restored, a favourite food has the added advantage of taking away any remaining unpleasant aftertaste of the pill. Of course, all cats are different, and while the majority will go for the peace offering, there are those who would prefer to see the self-mutilation or the cowering!
10. What edible, and perhaps unexpected, compound is most likely to appeal irresistibly to a cat's taste buds, to the point where the cat will willingly eat it, even if it contains medication?

Answer: Brewer's yeast

Cats - I don't know if it is all cats, but certainly the great majority - love brewer's yeast. This is the one thing into which a powder can be put, and given to the cat as a yeasty pill. Your feline owner will most likely eat it like a special treat, and then ask for more. Why don't all manufacturers of cat pills use this?
