Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. TH + metal oxidation = propulsion

Answer: Thrust

Oxidation creates 'rust' and adding this to TH creates 'thrust'. Rust is created when moisture interacts with iron to create the red/brown oxide called rust, which will eventually destroy the metal if left untreated. Thrust can refer to a physical force, such as that needed to propel a rocket into space.

It can also mean forcibly pushing yourself into a space - 'he thrust himself into the spotlight', or a violent jab - 'the spear was thrust into his side'.
2. TH + small grain = happen more than twice

Answer: Thrice

'Rice' is a crop and added to TH gives 'thrice', meaning three times. Although foods like oat, wheat and barley are more recognisable as grains, rice is classified in the same category. It is a staple food in many countries. Thrice is derived from three, the number one more than two, but , unlike twice, is rarely used in everyday speech.
3. TH + you and me = in this way

Answer: Thus

You and me means 'us' which creates 'thus' when added to TH. The word 'us' is most often used to refer to two people, but can also be used for more than this number - 'all of us agree', for example. Thus means 'as follows' or 'in this manner', but is rather archaic.
4. TH + poetic before = that place

Answer: There

'Ere' is often substituted for before and 'there' is the new word when ere is added to TH. The use of 'ere' seems to be restricted to poets, and is adopted when only one syllable is require. There refers to 'in or at that place' , so we might say 'the book you want is over there'.
5. TH + duty = an idea

Answer: Thought

'Ought' is something you must do and adding TH creates 'thought'. Ought is a stronger version of should, implying a higher level of duty. Using an expression like 'you really ought to know that' demands more than saying 'you should know that'. A thought is something abstract, not concrete, referring to an idea formed in the brain - 'a passing thought', for example.
6. TH + coarse = to be finished

Answer: Through

Coarse is another word for 'rough' and 'through' is the new word created by adding TH. Rough refers to something unfinished or unrefined - rough cloth will feel coarse to the touch, not silky, for example, or someone could be described as having rough manners. Through can mean something finsihed 'I'm through with writing that essay' or a pathway, as in a cut through.
7. TH + steal = a palpitation

Answer: Throb

If you steal from someone you 'rob' them. Add TH and you come up with 'throb'. Legally, robbery is different from stealing as it involves the threat or actual use of force or violence. Throb is a rhythmic pulsation, maybe resembling a heartbeat, which is why attractive people can be called heartthrobs.

It can also be used for repeated pain - 'my sprained ankle won't stop throbbing', for example.
8. TH + a small stream = something exciting

Answer: Thrill

A 'rilll' is the small stream and it becomes 'thrill' when TH is put in front of it. A rill is much smaller than a river and can also be called a rivulet. A thrill is something exciting, maybe with an element of danger, like a roller coaster ride, which sends a shiver down your spine.
9. TH + interior = less fat

Answer: Thinner

The inside of something can be described as 'inner' and adding this to TH forms the new word 'thinner'. Anything inside something else is 'inner', like an inner tube inside a tyre. Thinner means more slender, leaner or less dense.
10. TH + skin blemish = frustrate

Answer: Thwart

A 'wart' is a kind of skin blemish and 'thwart' is the new word created when TH is added. A wart is a kind of growth which appears on the skin and has absolutely nothing to do with frogs or toads. Oliver Cromwell is quoted as requesting he be painted 'warts and all' rather than be flattered by blemishes being ignored. To thwart someone means obstacles have been placed in their way, preventing them from achieving their goal.
