Deep sea diving had been practiced more than 2000 years ago by the ama (woman) in Japan, who dived deep into the sea to collect pearls. Competitive freediving is organized by two world associations: AIDA International (International Association for Development of Apnea) and CMAS (World Underwater Federation). Herbert Nisch dived to a depth of 253.2 m in 2014.
