Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lemurs live in Madagascar, but this large flightless bird lives in Australia

Answer: Emu

The emu is large - up to six foot tall - and can run at 30mph. They normally eat plants, grass and insects, but they can also go weeks without eating. They also swallow stones to help digest their food.
2. It will be a wrench saying goodbye to this little bird, it sings so prettily

Answer: Wren

Wrens are small birds, about four inches long, but they tend to have very loud and musical songs. In legend the wren is known as "The King of the Birds". The story goes that it was proclaimed that the bird that could fly the highest would be king, and the eagle flew higher than all the other birds.

However a wren hid in the feathers on the eagle's back, and when the eagle could fly no higher, the wren jumped off and flew a few inches higher, and so became King.
3. This bird looks very smart in its blue-and-white plumage as it flies to and from its nest in the eaves of your house

Answer: Martin

Martins (or House Martins) are a type of swallow; every year they migrate from South Africa to Europe to breed. They catch insects on the wing. They build mud nests under the roofs of houses, and make lovely twittering noises as they swoop down to feed their young.
4. This peculiar bird makes very strange noises as it swims around on lakes; you might see it in a Looney Tunes cartoon

Answer: Loon

The loon is well-known for its strange call which echoes across the countryside. They swim well, but because their feet are placed at the back end of their body they walk very poorly. The loon is the State Bird of Minnesota, the Provincial Bird of Ontario, and appears on the Canadian $1 coin.
5. Most rich people can afford to go to Africa to see this large flightless bird

Answer: Ostrich

The ostrich is the largest bird in the world - up to nine foot tall - and it can run at up to 43mph. For many years people used to hunt them for their feathers which were used to decorate hats; thankfully this fashion has now passed.
6. You will see this comical black-and-white seabird with a multi-coloured beak puffing away as it flies quickly over the wave tops.

Answer: Puffin

The puffin is a lovely little bird, with a strange, multi-coloured large beak. They make their nests in large colonies in burrows on small coastal islands, and they also swim underwater to catch small fish.
7. If you see this long-legged white bird, take a closer look - you won't regret it!

Answer: Egret

Egrets are large wading birds; like some other birds they used to be hunted for their feathers. They can often be seen walking along with grazing animals like cows, bison and buffalo, picking up the insects have been disturbed by their larger companions.
8. If you contravene the rules you won't be able to see this big black bird

Answer: Raven

Ravens are big birds, related to jays, rooks and jackdaws. They tend to live in very wild places, but a group of them live in the Tower of London. It's said that if they ever leave there then the Kingdom will fall. Consequently they're treated very well indeed!
9. If I hand over the binoculars you might be able to see this cooing bird.

Answer: Dove

Doves are found all over the world. They are often used as symbols, for example the Dove of Peace and in Christianity and Muslim religions too.
10. Please don't put this big black bird in the microwave!
