Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What prophecy was made about Urchin before he was ever born?

Answer: He would bring down a powerful ruler.

If the king of Urchin's homeland found out about the prophecy, he would have had Urchin killed. His mother fled to the island of Mistmantle seeking refuge. She had barely made it off the boat when Urchin was born. She died almost immediately after.
2. Who found baby Urchin after his mother died?

Answer: Crispin and Fir, squirrels

After Urchin's mother died, a seagull scooped him up as a snack. The seagull dropped him and he washed up in the surf. Crispin and Fir saw something fall from the sky and went to check it out. They gave him to Apple the squirrel to raise.
3. Urchin was an orphan that fell from the sky on a night of riding stars. What else was there about Urchin that made him different?

Answer: He had a light honey colored fur.

Since Urchin's mother came from a different land, Urchin looked different than the other squirrels on the island. It is something that others did not fail to notice. Urchin was well loved all the same.
4. Urchin was assigned to the work parties loading ships. He really was not looking forward to this. He received a last minute offer to take up another job. What was the new offer?

Answer: Urchin was to become a page.

Captain Crispin explained to Urchin that he was one of the people who found him on the beach the night he was born. He had watched over him as he grew and now wanted him to come to the tower to become his page.
5. What event happened the day Urchin began work at his new job?

Answer: The prince was murdered.

The prince was stabbed through the heart while the tower slept. It appeared to be an inside job, but they had no clues. They decided to cast lots to see who may be guilty.
6. Who is accused of Prince Tumble's murder?

Answer: Captain Crispin

The lots showed that it was Crispin who murdered Tumble. Captain Crispin was banished from the island. He was sent off in a boat and expected to never return. Those who knew Crispin knew that he was innocent. The lots had been fixed by Captain Husk, the real murderer.
7. Who looked after the ailing queen while Captain Husk and Lady Aspen married?

Answer: Gleaner

Lady Aspen had been slowly poisoning the queen. Everyone thought her failing health to be from the death of Prince Tumble. During the wedding Queen Spindle died. It was all part of a plan to break the king and cause him to appear incompetent. Captain Husk kept the king drunk.

He staged public appearances with the king in this condition so the people would lose confidence in him. It made the king easy to manipulate. He planned to have Urchin killed as well. Urchin left to find Captain Crispin and bring him out of exile.
8. Captain Husk convinced the king that culling the weaker animals would help everyone make it through the winter. He began culling more than what was approved. Captain Padra was rescuing as many of the infants as he could and putting them into hiding. Where was their secret place?

Answer: the ancient mole palace

Captain Padra was hiding the babies in the ancient mole palace. He knew the knowledge of its whereabouts had been lost long ago and they would be safe here. Another otter, Tay, finally worked out where Padra had been going. She conducted a raid on the old palace, but the babies had been moved in time to be spared.
9. When did Captain Husk plan to announce his takeover as king?

Answer: The Spring Festival

All the animals would be at the Spring Festival. Captain Husk and Lady Aspen made a big show of taking care of the king who was in a stupor. Things backfired and Captain Padra was able to expose them for what they really were. The people revolted against Husk. Urchin and Captain Crispin returned in time to cause a turning point in the revolution.

The king came out of his stupor and realized what was going on in time to help.
10. After the battle was over, who was the king?

Answer: Captain Crispin

King Brushen and Captain Husk were both accidentally killed during the battle, along with Lady Aspen. With no prince, Captain Crispin was next in line and became the king. They decided Urchin was much more than a page, but felt he was too young to be saddled with the responsibilities of being in the inner circle. They changed his title to 'Companion of the King'.
