Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vickie and I are going to the beach. In preparation, I was painting my toenails when...OMG! What DOES NOT cause this yucky infection I discovered under my toenails?

Answer: Expired polish

Toenail infections are typically caused by a dermatophyte fungus - yeasts and molds also can be responsible. Expired polish, not so much.

Evidently, toenails are more susceptible than fingernails to fungal infection because they are "confined in a dark, warm, moist (shoe) environment and toes usually have less blood flow than do fingers, making it harder for your body's immune system to detect and stop infection." (Mayo Clinic)

OK. But I still wouldn't use that expired clumpy nail polish, just in case.
2. You are a man who shaves every day. Strange bumps have sprung up on your face. They're not pimples or hives. What is the mostly likely cause of this icky presentation?

Answer: Ingrown hairs

While shaving, you created an "unnatural plane" to the surface of your facial hairs - they have curled around and grown back into the skin instead of rising up from it. They are most typically found in people with curly and/or coarse hair.

Hopefully, you will not exhibit buboes because this is a symptom of the bubonic plague. Acne and hairy warts one could live through, but the plague not so much.
3. Jeffy is very concerned about his appearance. Lately, he has noticed thinning hair around his temples and crown. What is the term for this issue?

Answer: Male Pattern Baldness

Persona Calvitium means "bald person" in Latin. Jeffy is not quite there yet!

Male pattern baldness is a gradual thinning on top the head. In men, hair often begins to recede from the forehead in a line that resembles the letter M.

Traction Alopecia hair loss can occur if you wear pigtails, braids or cornrows, or use tight hair rollers. This is typically found in women.

Androgenetic Alopecia is a common hair loss in both men and women.
4. I have worked as an ER nurse for over 20 years and have been on my feet for most of this time. Given my profession, which medical problem might I exhibit?

Answer: Varicose veins

Varicose veins are defined as "gnarled, enlarged veins - the most commonly affected are those in your legs and feet. That's because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of your lower body." (Mayo Clinic)

Sclerotherapy effectively treats varicose and spider veins. It's often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins.

Straton & Briggs is a type of machine. A Zymogen is an inactive enzyme precursor (I have no clue either but it sounds cool.)
5. As my grandfather ages, his eyebrows, nose hair and ear hair have grown. What is the definitive scientific reason for this condition?

Answer: Scientists don't exactly know what causes hair to sprout this way

It is a mystery! Hair sproutage occurs in these areas in both men and women. Dr. David Liebovitz, an associate professor of Medicine at Northwestern University, guesses that it has to do with hormones and the life cycle of hair. "The long term exposure of hair follicles to hormones such as testosterone will disrupt and lengthen their growing period. That's why nose, ear, and eyebrow hair can reach troll-doll proportions without regular trimming as we age." (Yes...finally, a medical reference to troll-dolls!)
6. Every morning, I wash my hair, blow it dry and then use a hair curler. Recently, I noticed my locks were a bit distressed. Which is not a correct definition of my damaged tresses?

Answer: Tinnitus

Trichoptilosis, schizotrichia, and (informally) split ends refer to the splitting or fraying of the hair-shaft due to excessive heat and mechanical stress. (Dorland's Medical Dictionary, 1968)

Tinnitus is a ringing in the ear. It is very common, affecting about 50 million adults in the U.S. For most, the condition is merely an annoyance, but for some it severely affects their lives. (Mayo/WebMD)
7. I greeted my dog this morning with an ear scratch and a kiss (ewww...but doggie parents can relate). My dog loved the scratch but wrinkled her nose and ran away from the kiss. What is a common result of the causes of "Running Away Doggie Syndrome" aka "Morning Breath"? (Hint - three are factors, only one is a result.)

Answer: Lack of saliva

The other foils are primary FACTORS in the "morning breath" syndrome. They all RESULTED in lack of saliva. I know I have bad breath when even my dog runs away! Breath mints, anyone?
8. I have a hammertoe caused by a muscle and ligament imbalance around the middle joint of my toe. This condition makes my toe bend to either direction and become stuck in this position. What could NOT be a cause for this problem?

Answer: Comsol

Genes, arthritis and injury may all cause a hammertoe. Mine is on the second toe of my left foot and is all twisty. (I have rheumatoid arthritis.)

Comsol hosts a very interesting website that describes convection. (I know... I love the word as a foil, but must give credit where credit is due.) "Convection is mass transfer due to the bulk motion of a fluid. For example, the flow of liquid water transports molecules or ions that are dissolved in the water." Wow - amazing! Nothing to do with hammertoe, however.
9. Annie is enrolled in the University of Buckwheat's "Nonessential Knowledge" program. She seems to yawn quite frequently during her classes. What is a discovered reason for this activity?

Answer: It cools the brain

It cools the brain, says Andrew C. Gallup, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University: "We have collected data on rats, parakeets, and humans. All the data supports the brain-cooling hypothesis".

Good for them! I must admit, however, that in Annie's defense, when I yawn in college classes it means I am bored out of my skull - it is either yawn or go running up the aisle making animal noises. (I dare you to say you have never thought about doing this!)
10. I just discovered a mole. What did I not find?

Answer: A dish involving crepes and cheese

Mole is a generic term for a number of sauces used in Mexican cuisine. It has nothing to do with the French dish of crepes and cheese!

The other foils are correct definitions of the word "mole".
