Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You're having a party and guests are swooning over your homemade onion dip. But don't get cocky! Since you've left a raw, cut onion on your kitchen counter, there may soon be....

Answer: An argument

According to "A Dictionary of Superstitions", edited by Iona Opie and Moira Tatem, the presence of raw, cut onions and onion peels lying about one's house create an atmosphere of discord among those who enter it.
2. You're leaving hospital after a successful thumb transplant, taking with you all the flowers that well-wishers have sent. But a superstitious nurse stops you. What does she say will happen if you take the flowers home?

Answer: You'll soon return as a patient

The negative energy attached to flowers removed from sick rooms is also assigned to flowers that one finds lying on the side of the road. An old Suffolk tradition warns that to pick up flowers is to pick up illness. Perhaps it all comes down to common sense regarding objects that have been exposed to germs.
3. You've been invited to attend your superstitious friend's housewarming party. But when you present her with a gift of steak knives, she replies that she can't accept them because she doesn't have a coin to give you in return. What does your friend believe will happen if she accepts the knives?

Answer: Your friendship will end

Superstitious tradition has long warned of the severing power embodied in knives and other forms of cutlery. So think carefully before choosing your next gift for a friend!
4. It's a chilly March afternoon and you're enjoying a bowl of steaming hot tomato soup. Oops! You've dropped your spoon onto the kitchen floor! What must you now do to avoid bad luck?

Answer: Let someone else pick it up

Unfortunately, this superstition makes no allowances for those spoon-users who happen to live on their own. In the very worst cases, one imagines a kitchen floor littered with spoons from decades of spoon dropping.
5. You love candles, but as a safety-minded person, you can't imagine ever accidentally shutting up a lighted candle in a pantry. You don't even have a pantry! But according to superstition, if you ever did make such a mistake, what would soon occur in your family?

Answer: A death

Superstitions regarding candles have filled books on their own. A disproportionate amount seem to be concerned with death. My personal favourite claims that a blue-tinted candle flame is a sign that spirits are present in the room.
6. It's a beautiful spring morning, and you're dutifully making your bed when friends arrive and whisk you off for a day of fun. What will be the result of your interrupted bed-making?

Answer: Sleepless night

Actually, this superstition, which belongs to the Scottish tradition, warns that "a much worse evil" than a sleepless night may befall a person interrupted while making a bed. (I, personally, think that a sleepless night rates as evil enough on its own.)
7. Your pirate lover has gone off to sea, leaving you to look after a trunk filled with personal items and extra eye patches. What should you NOT do to the trunk to ensure your sweetheart's safe return?

Answer: Lock it

This superstition has its roots in the folklore that grew up around Scottish fishing communities. When someone went off to sea, their trunk was left unlocked with the key in place, waiting for its owner to return.
8. You've just been given a beautifully-framed print of "Dogs Playing Poker" and you can't wait to hang it in your home. According to superstition, in what part of your home should you not hang it or any other picture?

Answer: Over the head of a bed

Ancient lore warns art lovers that pictures hung over the head of a bed will bring death. Also included in this prohibition against picture hanging are the spaces over doors, especially in theater dressing rooms.
9. Oh, no! Your boorish neighbor from down the road is heading in the direction of your house. What household object should you quickly lay across the doorstep to keep him walking past?

Answer: Broom

The laying of a broom across one's doorstep was originally meant to ward off members of the community thought to be witches. For the broom to do its work effectively, it had to be positioned with the straw tip pointing outward. Seeing it, the unfortunately targeted individual was supposed to turn heel and run.
10. You've just bought groceries and are putting them away when you accidentally break an egg. To neuteralize the bad luck you've brought on yourself, what should you do?

Answer: Break another egg

To paraphrase an old Irish rhyme: "Break an egg and break your leg, break three, bad luck to thee, break two, love comes to you."
