Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, what two things must you have in order to make soap?

Answer: Fat and alkali

Soap is usually made from a chemical reaction between fats (which includes oils) and lye (sodium hydroxide, NaOH). Other strongly alkaline substances can be used to make soap. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) is used to make soft soaps, for example.
2. What is the technical term for the chemical process used to make soap?

Answer: Saponification

Saponification is the process of changing fatty acids into soap with use of an alkali.
3. From where did pre-Industrial Age people get the chemicals that they needed to make soap?

Answer: Wood ashes

Water percolated through wood ashes produced a lye solution. The strength of the solution was determined by floating an egg in it- if an area of the shell about the size of a dime was above the water, the lye was strong enough to use.
4. Which of the following is NOT a difference between commercially-made and homemade soaps?

Answer: Commercially-made soaps contain glycerin

The glycerin, an important emollient, is removed from commercial soaps and repackaged for separate sale. Many commercial 'soaps' are actually detergents and contain no soap.
5. Why is coconut oil used in soap?

Answer: Producing lather

Coconut oil is actually drying if used in large quantities. It makes soap that lathers even in hard water.
6. From which oil is Castile soap made?

Answer: Olive

Castile soap is very mild.
7. Both essential oils and fragrance oils are used to scent homemade soap. How are they different?

Answer: Essential oils are natural, fragrance oils are artificial

Essentail oils are distilled from plant materials and can be very expensive. Fragrance oils are much cheaper but are artificial.
8. Milk soap is almost always made with goat's milk. Why?

Answer: It's naturally homogenized

Goat's milk makes a smoother soap.
9. When making soap, the ingredients are mixed until the mixture thickens slightly and a bit dribbled on top stands out for awhile rather than sinking right in. What is this called?

Answer: Tracing

When the soap does this, it's ready to pour into molds.
10. Making homemade soap is too difficult and dangerous for the average person to do at home.

Answer: False

Making soap is actually amazingly easy, and a lot of fun! There are dozens of websites, email lists and books on soapmaking- check them out and happy soaping!
