Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is this sentence capitalized correctly, according to the Yale Style Manual? 'UnitedHealthcare's internet site can be found on the world wide web.'

Answer: No

The Yale Style Manual suggests capitalizing Internet, Intranet and World Wide Web. But Microsoft has declared that they will not capitalize it automatically. The key here is to be consistent throughout your document!
2. How would you write the number four in this sentence? 'We have _____ main products.'

Answer: four

As a general rule, you should spell out numbers under 10.
3. Is this the simplest way to write this sentence? 'At 12:00 midnight, the group returned.'

Answer: No

Some people think the more words they use, the more impressive. However, 12:00 and midnight provide repeated information. A simpler way to say this would be, 'At midnight, the group returned.'
4. Is this the simplest, shortest and most straightforward way to write this sentence? 'In spite of the fact that I attended, I will never do it again.'

Answer: No

Once again, this is perhaps more wordy than it absolutely needs to be. The simpler way to say this is, 'Although I attended, I will never do it again.' Keep it simple and it will often be easier to read and understand.
5. Is this sentence punctuated correctly? 'I reported the shortages and other problems to my boss.'

Answer: Yes

Don't be too liberal with commas! This sentence doesn't require any punctuation.
6. Is this sentence spelled correctly? 'If they're ready, then it's all right to go to the meeting.'

Answer: Yes

Most of the words in this sentence are often misspelled, but they're used appropriately in this sentence. Here are the tricky words: they're vs. their and there; than vs. then; all right vs. alright. Your spell check would never catch these so watch how you use them!
7. Is this sentence spelled correctly? 'Your already to go, accept your conscious keeps gnawing at you.'

Answer: No

This sentence is full of commonly misspelled or misused words: Your vs. You're; already vs. all ready; accept vs except; conscious vs. conscience.
8. What is the best punctuation after health plans? 'UnitedHealthcare was once a grouping of local health plans now it is a national organization.'

Answer: health plans;

Punctuation is always somewhat difficult to get right. The semi-colon works best here because you could replace it with the word 'and' and it will still make sense. It's combining two independent clauses.
9. What is the best punctuation after 'company' (in the middle of this sentence)? 'Some people may refer to us as a managed care company but we are really a health and well-being company.'

Answer: company,

Use commas before a little conjunction (but, and, for, nor, yet, so) to connect two independent clauses.
10. Which of these punctuation marks would be appropriate after 'economy'? 'Although we are in a sluggish economy UnitedHealth Group continues to exceed growth expectations.'

Answer: economy,

Use a comma to set off introductory elements.
