Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book is told from the points-of-view of three characters. Whose is told in first person?

Answer: Elana

The book is Elana writing up a report of what she and her team did on Andrecia. She writes her own sections in first person; Jarel's are in third person. Georyn's are also in third person, but are written like a fairy tale--Elana is always called "Enchantress" or "Lady."
2. The machine that the Imperials use to level the Andrecian forests resembles which mythological creature?

Answer: Dragon

The native Andrecians have no concept of technology. The leveler happens to resemble a dragon, so they try to defeat it as if it were a real dragon. Georyn and his brothers get permission to go after the "dragon," and en route they meet Elana, the "Enchantress."
3. How does Elana's father prepare her to handle fear and loneliness on an alien planet?

Answer: He and Evrek leave her alone for days without contacting her.

He manufactures a frighting scenario so that Elana can safely work through her fear of being alone on a new planet. When she discovers this, she's happy that her father was that considerate and prepared.
4. What does Dulard say the Imperial Corps will do if the Andrecians exhibit supernatural powers?

Answer: They will leave the planet quickly.

Jarel wants the Empire to leave the planet and its natives alone. Dulard doesn't take Jarel's thoughts about the natives having ESP seriously, but says they will leave the planet if Jarel is right, as he doesn't want to mess with people who have psychic power.

It meshes with the Federation's mission, which is to make the Empire believe that all Andrecians have supernatural powers by training one or more of them to use their latent psychic abilities.
5. The Starwatcher (Elana's father) sends Georyn and Terwyn to find three objects. Which is not one of them?

Answer: A knife

Using the objects and some play-acting, Elana, her father, and Evrek teach the brothers to use their mental powers. They ground the power in something more concrete so that the brothers can understand--they can't quite grasp psi power, but they understand verbal charms and magical objects, so the team uses those to build the brothers' mental abilities.
6. Georyn takes Elana to a village. What in particular startles her there?

Answer: A man with no hands

She gives the man some money and asks Georyn why he has no hands. She has no idea what "justice" means to the Andrecians, and is horrified and silent when Georyn tells her about the beggar; it's implied that his hands were cut off for stealing. Elana then has a talk with her father about why the Federation doesn't stop these atrocities in Youngling cultures, and he assures her that each civilization must progress through this stage on their own in order to become a mature species.
7. Elana gives Georyn a stone that she insists is full of magic that will help him defeat the dragon. Where does she get the stone?

Answer: In the forest

During her first night on Andrecia, she finds a stone with a hole through the middle and keeps it. Terwyn fails when using the charm, so the team gives Georyn more advanced psychic training on their ship. Beforehand, Elana gives him the stone on the string, claiming it has special powers.

He thinks it looks like an ordinary river rock, but "knows" that it must be magical, and so has more faith in himself to defeat the dragon.
8. Elana tries to stop some Andrecians from sacrificing a girl by asserting her authority as an enchantress. She proves that she has magical powers by doing what?

Answer: Putting her hands in the fire and not being burned

Elana thinks that the men will bow to her authority because Georyn and his brothers did; however, the men are not so convinced. Instead, they leave her and Georyn as sacrifices to the dragon.
9. What display of psychic power does Georyn give that convinces the Imperials to leave Andrecia?

Answer: He levitates a bunch of rocks that are about to fall on Elana.

Elana planned to commit suicide this way to avoid being taken off-world by the Imperials, who would find out about the Federation if they studied her. Georyn is so frightened for the Enchantress, whom he loves, that he's able to use this much power, saving her life and his people at the same time.

This display scares the Imperials so much that they immediately free the Andrecians and pack up to go home.
10. Besides the illegality of taking a Youngling to a Federation world, why can't Georyn leave his planet and go with Elana?

Answer: On Federation worlds, he would be a misfit.

Elana wonders if they can make an exception with Georyn, since now that he knows of psychic power and worlds beyond the stars, his world may never be enough for him. However, she realizes that he will be a hero to his people as a slayer of dragons, but only a lowly oddity in the Federation.

He and Elana kiss before she leaves him, and she speaks to him telepathically as she leaves the planet. Her father muses that one day, Georyn's feat will likely be seen as a myth.
