When Cain was twelve, his father, Alexis Hargreaves, tried to kill Cain by putting arsenic in Cain's tea. When Cain figured out what was going on, he switched out rose powder for the arsenic and laced his father's pipe with poison. Unaware that he hadn't killed Cain, Alexis began to smoke his pipe with satisfaction. Cain then revealed he was alive. Just as the effects of the poison started to take affect, Alexis jumped off one of the Hargreaves' balconies positioned over a steep cliff.

He wasn't seen again for five years and was presumed dead.

Answer: His family was killed in a fire. Cain's father offered him a job.

Riff's family entire family was killed in a fire over six years ago. He spent some time in a hospital and tried to kill himself multiple times before Alexis Hargreaves (Cain's father) offered him a job and a place to live. He became head butler after Alexis's disappearance.

Answer: Cain's adopted sister.

She is supposedly Cain's half sister, through Cain's father Alexis. Her mother was a maid who killed herself to stop her ex-husband from finding and killing Mary Weather.

Cain's mother was Augusta Hargreaves, Alexis Hargreaves's sister. When he was twelve, Cain found out. He'd always believed that his mother was Alexis's wife, Lenora.

Lenora was in fact Alexis's wife, but not Cain's mother. When Cain was young she tried to murder him, feeling that Alexis didn't love her because of him. At the time she was dying from a poison fed to her by Alexis.

Suzette was Cain's cousin. Cain had a crush on her, but she died in the first volume. It's unlikely she was ever with Alexis.

Allegra Duke was Mary Weather's mother.

Answer: Neil Hargreaves (Cain's uncle)

When Alexis disappears, Cain is put under the guardianship of his uncle, Neil Hargreaves. Though they fight often, Neil truly loves and worries about his nephew.

Answer: A fortune teller.

Mary Weather was making a living as a fortune teller. That's actually how she and Cain met. She tracked Cain down and told him his fortune. Shortly after, Cain adopted her.

Answer: A medical student.

Before his family died and he was given work by Cain's father, Riff was studying to be a medical doctor.

Answer: His biological father.

Initially it's portrayed that Alexis Hargreaves adopted Jezebel Disraeli when Jezebel was young. However, in the fourth "Godchild" volume we find out that Alexis is actually Jezebel's biological father, through a mistress.

Answer: Emmeline

In order to adopt Mary Weather, Cain agreed to marry Emmeline Rotterdale. Though initially they didn't get along, Emmeline loved Cain. Cain felt horribly responsible for her death. She was killed by Jack the Ripper, while trying to follow Cain.

Meridianna was one of Cain's loves. She killed herself to stop Jezebel from hurting Cain. Suzette was Cain's cousin and one of his crushes. Eliza appeared in "Lion Story." Though she was pretty, Cain was never really attracted to her.

Answer: A disinherited nobel out to win Mary Weather's heart and fortune.

Oscar Gabriel was disinherited by his family and trying to win back his father's attention by marrying Mary Weather. He also claims Mary Weather looks just like his fiancé. However, really, it's Cain who's the spitting image.

He's hugely loyal to both Cain and Mary Weather.
