Eddard Stark was, at the beginning of the series, Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North. He had received the nickname "The Quiet Wolf" in his youth, while he was fostering in the Vale with Robert Baratheon under Jon Arryn. Robert gave him the nickname, due to Eddard's somber personality and stern face.
2. The Leech Lord
Answer: Roose Bolton
Roose Bolton is the Lord of the Dreadfort and leader of House Bolton. His nickname is given to him because he receives regular leechings, in order to rid himself of the bad blood, as he says. Roose Bolton is infamous for practicing the banned tradition of the first night.
His pale blue eyes make it difficult for anyone to stare at him for a long time span. His soft voice is, according to Jaime Lannister, more frightening than Vargo Hoat's "slobbering malevolence."
3. The Goat
Answer: Vargo Hoat
Vargo Hoat comes from Qohor, a city in Essos. He is the leader of the ruthless sellsword band calling themselves "Brave Companions". His nickname originated from his helmet, which resembles goat horns. In the books, Vargo and his company are initially hired by Tywin Lannister, but later defect to Roose Bolton.
Despite the fact that Bolton himself is secretly allied with Tywin, the patriarch of House Lannister has no use for Vargo, who was responsible for his son, Jaime Lannister, losing his right hand. So, when Lannister men under Gregor Clegane capture the castle of Harrenhal, Hoat is captured and eventually killed.
4. The Hound
Answer: Sandor Clegane
Sandor Clegane is the younger brother of Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, but the two brothers loathe each other. In the beginning of the series, Sandor is the sworn shield of Prince Joffrey. He is called "The Hound" due to his helm, which looks like a dog's head, as well as his unquestioning obedience to his masters.
5. The Mad King
Answer: Aerys II Targaryen
Aerys II Targaryen was the last Targaryen king of Westeros before Robert's Rebellion. He eventually became known as "The Mad King" due to his obsession with fire. The gruesome execution of Brandon and Rickard Stark, under Aerys' orders, triggered a chain of events that led to Robert's Rebellion and the overthrow of the Targaryens. Aerys was murdered by a member of his own Kingsguard, Jaime Lannister.
6. Lord Bloodraven
Answer: Brynden Rivers
Brynden Rivers was one of the Great Bastards, illegitimate sons of Aegon IV Targaryen who were later legitimized. The nickname Bloodraven due to a birthmark on his right cheek which resembles a raven drawn in blood. Bloodraven played an important part in the Targaryen victory over the rebellious Blackfyres.
However, one of his acts to keep the realm safe from potential usurpers, namely the arrest and execution of Aenys Blackfyre, earned him the enmity of Aegon V the Unworthy, so Brynden was forced to join the Night's Watch. Brynden became Lord Commander of the Watch, but disappeared in a ranging.
It is possible that the last greenseer, whom Bran Stark meets in "A Dance with Dragons", is none other than Brynden.
7. The Kingslayer
Answer: Jaime Lannister
Jaime Lannister is the son of Lord Tywin Lannister and his wife, Joanna. Jaime has a twin sister, Cersei. When they were young, the siblings developed an incestuous relationship. Jaime earned the nickname "Kingslayer" because he killed the king whom he swore to protect, Aerys II Targaryen, aka the Mad King. Because of this deed, Jaime is largely considered untrustworthy and everything he says is cast in the worst possible light.
8. The Beggar King
Answer: Viserys Targaryen
Viserys Targaryen was the second son of his father, Aerys II Targaryen, aka The Mad King. Viserys became known as "The Beggar King" because he sold his mother's crown jewels to feed himself and his little sister, Daenerys. 15 years after the overthrow of his father, Viserys believes that he has found a way to reclaim the Iron Throne, by marrying his sister to Khal Drogo, leader of the nomadic war-like savages known as the Dothraki.
He believes that, if Drogo is pleased with the marriage, his army of 40000 will march to Westeros under Viserys' orders.
However, the khal is hesitant to leave Essos and Viserys scoffs at that, believing Drogo has not honored their agreement. When Viserys loudly demands from Drogo to give him his crown, the Dothraki warrior melts his golden belt and "crowns" Viserys with that, killing him.
9. The Red Viper
Answer: Oberyn Martell
Oberyn Martell is the younger brother of Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne. Oberyn is known for his fierce temper. He has fathered eight illegitimate daughters, called the Sand Snakes. Oberyn loathes House Lannister, because his sister, Elia and her children were murdered by two Lannister men, Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch, under orders of Tywin Lannister.
In "A Storm of Swords", the third book of the series, Oberyn goes to King's Landing demanding justice for the murder of his sister and obtains the seat on the small council offered to his brother.
When Tyrion Lannister is falsely accused of the murder of Joffrey Baratheon, Oberyn champions him in a trial by combat, knowing that Gregor Clegane will be his adversary. Oberyn manages to wound Clegane with a poisoned spear, but stares too long at his defeated opponent, allowing Clegane to bring him down and kill him.
However, he achieves posthumous vengeance, because the poison he applied to his spear leaves Clegane to die in tremendous agony.
10. Lord Lamprey
Answer: Wyman Manderly
Wyman Manderly is the head of House Manderly and master of White Harbor. He is nicknamed Lord Lamprey, as well as Lord-too-fat-to-sit-on-a-horse. Despite his being overweight, he is, in fact, clever and cunning. He is also fiercely loyal to House Stark.
