Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the events of "Caliban's War", Bobbie Draper was living with her family on Mars. How was Bobbie related to the protagonist of "Gods of Risk", David Draper?

Answer: Bobbie was David's aunt.

Bobby Draper was staying with her brother, who was David's father. She spent her days at the apartment lifting weights, and watching the news about the negotiations between Earth and Mars.

David's parents worked away from the apartment, so it had been easy for him to smuggle things through without questions. With his aunt Bobbie there, he had to be a lot more discreet.
2. Unbeknownst to his parents, David was working for a criminal named Hutch. What was David making for Hutch?

Answer: Drugs

David was a chemistry student at lower university. He had access to labs and chemical reagents, and paid attention to detail. This, combined with his overbearing parents, made him a prime candidate for Hutch. David was one of Hutch's best cooks, but he never tried the drugs himself. Leelee was at the meeting to verify their effects.
3. David met with Hutch and Leelee at a clandestine meeting at the beginning of the novella. After the exchange, David escorted Leelee home on the public transport tube. What complication shut down the tube car while they were on it?

Answer: The vacuum seal of the tube had been sabotaged.

The neighbourhoods of the city were connected by sealed vacuum tubes for rapid transport. When one of the vacuum seals was compromised, the tube shut down. They wouldn't find out until later that the tube had been sabotaged by a protester trying to show just how fragile their city was to an Earth attack.

Innis Shallows and Innis Deep were the only two neighbourhoods in the city that had only one tube connecting to them. They became the neighbourhoods inhabited by social recluses and criminals wanting to avoid crowds. Hutch lived in the Deep, and Leelee lived in the Shallows.
4. With the delay on the tube, David was late getting home. What excuse did he give to his parents?

Answer: He did not provide an excuse.

David lived in Breach Candy, where the lower university was located. He should not have been affected by the tube system shutting down, so he was thinking up a unique excuse he could use for being home late. When he got home, his aunt Bobbie told him that his parents had been caught by the tube disruption, and couldn't make it home that evening.

They would get a room in a different neighbourhood, and come back in the morning. David ended up not needing his excuse.
5. Leelee sent David a message asking for help, and also asking him not to talk to Hutch about it. David was so anxious that he barely paid attention when Bobbie told him about which activity she'd done when she was younger?

Answer: Free-climbing

Free-climbing on Mars involved going outside with only a thin environment suit and as little air as needed. The goal was to go outside, do the climb, and get back inside as fast as possible. Bobbie's father said everyone who did it was stupid, including Bobbie, but she still went and loved it.

The three incorrect answers were Belter activities. Slingshotting involved taking a ship and plotting a course with gravity assists. The best ones involved only a single burn at the beginning of the trip, and then letting gravity do the rest. If you could do it undetected and quickly, that was better. Maneo used one in the prologue of "Abaddon's Gate".

Golgo was a fast-paced game that involved hurling balls in a court. To James Holden, it was confusing and apparently only worked in low gravity. Naomi and Sam were quite adept at it.

Shin-sin was a mix between a dance and juggling, slinging spheres to a rhythm. It also only seemed to work in a low gravity environment. It was seen in "Babylon's Ashes", the sixth book in the series.
6. David was almost 16 years old and still in lower university. As if there wasn't enough stress in his life, the upper university contacted him about his placement. What was their message?

Answer: He was placed in Development, the highest placement he'd qualified for.

The moment had snuck up on David, and when the message finally came, he was too emotionally drained to really care. His parents were overjoyed, and took the whole family out to a restaurant to celebrate, but his thoughts were dominated by Leelee and Hutch.

Upper university would be even more busy and stressful, but there would be a relatively calm transition period that he could use to sort out his current predicament.
7. David wanted to clear up the situation with Leelee. He used the emergency contact number to call Hutch, and demanded a face-to-face meeting that night. Hutch didn't want to, but what made him ultimately agree?

Answer: David threatened to tell security everything.

Hutch was very much the head of his own operation. He was used to giving orders and having them followed, and not the other way around. He became easily angered when David started acting up.

The first time was at the lower university, when David said he needed to meet. Hutch tried to warn him off, but it didn't work. Hutch met with David, tried to explain the situation with Leelee, and even gave David a bonus to keep him happy.

The second time David demanded a meeting, he had to use the emergency contact number, and Hutch flat-out refused to meet. Hutch only changed his mind when David threatened to tell security everything. David brought a large batch of drugs to Hutch to trade for Leelee's life, but even that was not received well.
8. Why did David need Bobbie to come with him to his final meeting with Hutch and Leelee?

Answer: There was a curfew on the transport tubes.

A few days after the sabotage of the transport tube's vacuum seal, there was an explosion in a different neighbourhood. To stabilize things, the city was placed in a stage-one lockdown. Minors were not allowed on the tube system unaccompanied. David found out about this immediately after demanding to meet Hutch, burning the last of his goodwill. If he didn't show up, Hutch might have thought it was a setup. David asked Bobbie to help him through the tubes.

She agreed, and even bluffed her way past a security guard, even through she didn't know what David was up to.
9. At the final secret meeting in "Gods of Risk", Hutch had brought Leelee and a scary looking pistol. Who ended up getting shot at the meeting?

Answer: No one

Hutch's pistol did go off once during the meeting when Leelee tried to defend David during the conversation. Hutch fired into the ground beside Leelee and told her to not interrupt again. Hutch leveled the gun at David to perform some "risk management," but Bobbie burst into the meeting and disarmed Hutch, breaking his trigger finger.

She then calmly disassembled the gun while talking to Hutch. She said that David was no longer in his employ, and to not ever pursue the kid again. He could keep the drugs, sell them, or dump them in the recycler.

Then Bobby, David, and Leelee left Hutch. Bobbie couldn't get Leelee on the tube, so she went to stay with some friends.
10. Did David's parents find out about his illegal activities?

Answer: No

Bobbie saw that David had gotten in a little over his head, but was still a good kid. She helped him get away from Hutch and did not tell his parents. She also let David know that Leelee didn't really like him; that she only acted that way for her personal benefit. Bobbie promised to take David free-climbing sometime.

David only saw Leelee once more in his life, two years later when he was in upper university. He saw her when he was at a restaurant with some other students. When she recognized him, her face was a mix of anger and fear. They didn't speak. David turned back to his schoolwork, which had finally become interesting.
