Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The narrator of the story; a pilot who has been injured in a plane crash and moves to Lymstock for a period of recuperation.

Answer: Jerry Burton

After his accident, Jerry was advised to "go and live in the country and lead the life of a vegetable for at least six months...absolute rest and quiet." However, peace and quiet take a backseat when Jerry becomes involved in the mystery of a series of anonymous poison pen letters, a murder disguised as suicide, and a second murder.
2. The narrator's sister, a very modern young lady, who moves with her brother to Lymstock after a relationship break-up.

Answer: Joanna Burton

Joanna receives a particularly nasty anonymous letter calling her a "painted trollop" and suggesting that she and Jerry are not brother and sister but are living in sin. They initially dismiss the letter as a bit of spite because they are newcomers to the village and because they know the accusation is untrue. However, it did "leave a nasty taste in the mouth".
3. The village doctor, an awkward and shy man, who falls in love with Joanna whom he eventually marries.

Answer: Owen Griffith

Dr Griffith supervises Jerry's convalescence. Jerry describes him as "dark, ungainly, with awkward ways of moving and deft, very gentle hands. He had a jerky way of talking and was rather shy". Jerry likes Owen and is afraid that he has fallen for Joanna. Jerry believes Joanna is just toying with Owen out of wounded vanity and tells her to "lay off" him.
4. An elderly spinster who, because of financial constraints, decides to rent her house to the Burtons while she moves into rooms kept by her former parlourmaid.

Answer: Miss Emily Barton

Miss Emily Barton depends upon shares for her income and, despite living very frugally, finds herself in financial difficulties. She decides to rent out her house but has reservations about doing so, telling Joanna that "she would never have dreamed of letting her house if things had not been so different nowadays--this terrible taxation." She is quite unsettled by the idea of a man (i.e. Jerry) living in her house but seems somewhat pacified by the fact that he is an invalid.
5. The wife of the local solicitor; she receives a poison pen letter declaring that her husband is not the father of their two sons and she dies shortly thereafter.

Answer: Mona Symmington

Mona Symmington has a 20-year-old daughter, Megan Hunter, from her first marriage, and two young sons, Brian and Colin, with her present husband, Richard Symmington. After receiving an anonymous letter declaring that her husband was not the father of their two sons, she is found dead.

The inquest concludes her death was caused by ingestion of cyanide and the verdict is "suicide while temporarily insane".
6. Lymstock's local solicitor; he is described as "the acme of calm respectability". He receives an anonymous letter accusing him of having an illicit relationship with his clerk, Miss Ginch.

Answer: Richard Symmington

Mr Symmington is described as "the sort of man who would never give his wife a moment's anxiety...a kindly man, no doubt, a good husband and father". He receives an anonymous letter accusing him of having an affair with his clerk, Miss Ginch, who leaves his employment as a result.

But nobody appears to be taking that accusation seriously. Jerry states that Symmington was "not one to set the pulses madly racing" and Miss Ginch was "forty at least, with pince-nez and teeth like a rabbit". He is rather shocked to observe that Miss Ginch appears to be enjoying the situation and wonders if she is the anonymous letter-writer.
7. The Symmington's house parlour-maid; she is found murdered and stuffed into a cupboard under the stairs.

Answer: Agnes Woddell

Agnes arranges to meet Miss Partridge, the Burtons' housekeeper, for advice but is murdered before that meeting can take place. It seems that Agnes knew something regarding the death of Mrs Symmington and/or the anonymous letter-writer but was murdered to prevent her disclosing what she knew.
8. Mona Symmington's 20-year-old daughter by her first marriage who is the "odd man out" in the Symmington family; she risks her own life to expose the murderer.

Answer: Megan Hunter

Megan is rather immature and awkward for her age. Jerry feels sorry for her and takes her under his wing. He takes her to London for a makeover with his sister Joanna's dressmaker and hair-stylist. He eventually realises he has fallen in love with Megan.
9. The vicar's wife; she is described as a very forceful personality and perhaps "a little bit mad". As a result, most the population of Lymstock were a little afraid of her.

Answer: Maud Dane Calthrop

Mrs Maud Dane Calthrop "seldom gave advice and never interfered, yet she represented to the uneasy consciences of the village the Deity personified". When she decides the police are not getting very far in their enquiries, she elects to call in an expert - "I don't mean someone who knows about anonymous letters or even about murder. I mean someone who knows people. Don't you see? We want someone who knows a great deal about wickedness!" And that expert is Miss Jane Marple!

The character of Mrs Maud Dane Calthrop also appears in the novel "The Pale Horse".
10. An elderly spinster who likes to knit and solve mysteries; she knows a great deal about human nature. Mrs Dane Calthrop declares her an expert in "human wickedness".

Answer: Miss Jane Marple

When Jerry meets Miss Jane Marple at the Dane Calthrop's home, he describes her as "an amiable, elderly lady who was knitting something with white, fleecy wool". Mrs Dane Calthrop is confident that Miss Marple will solve the mystery which, of course, she does. Miss Marple attributes her knowledge of human nature to living in a village where she is able to study it up close.
