Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the 2nd chapter, tell me which character said this: "Let us hope that he did not pay too dearly for his boldness."

Answer: Legolas

This quote was after Aragorn finds the brooch that Pippin left as a clue.
2. Chapter 5: Choose which character said this: "Yes, we will set out together," said _____. "But I do not doubt that you will come there before me, if you wish."

Answer: Aragorn

Gandalf said that he had to go to Edoras, and told Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli to go where they must. He then asked them to go with him, and this quote is Aragorn's reply to Gandalf's request.
3. In chapter 6, who said this: "This is the house of Theoden, not of Aragorn, even were he the King of Gondor in the seat of Denethor."

Answer: Hama

They were at the doors to the Golden Hall and Hama was the "Doorward of Theoden." Aragorn was disputing about letting his sword, Anduril, into the hands of any other man.
4. Chapter 9: "Yes, whichever side wins, his outlook is poor." This quote is in reference to Saruman. Which character said this?

Answer: Merry

Argorn mentioned, "But Saruman at any rate is in a cleft stick of his own cutting." Merry then responded to that with the quote from this question.
5. Chapter 11: "Peril comes in the night when least expected," he said. We have had a narrow escape." Which character stated this?

Answer: Gandalf

Gandalf said this when he was talking to Aragorn and some others. Pippin had looked into the Palantir by this time and now seemed to be all right.
6. This starts the second half of "The Two Towers." Tell me which character said this from the 1st chapter in book 4: "Then the rope must have broken, frayed on the rock-edge, I expect."

Answer: Frodo

This is the first chapter in "The Two Towers" where Sam and Frodo continue their story. The first half of it was concerned with Aragorn, Gandalf, Theoden and etc. This half will be all on Frodo's quest, with Sam and Gollum. Merry and Pippin are not involved in this half.
This specific quote was in reference to the elven rope which was given to Sam. Frodo had thought it was tied poorly or had broken.
7. In chapter 3, who said this: "See it, see it? What will you see?"

Answer: Frodo

Though it is not stated who said this quote, it is implied that Frodo said it when he was questioning Gollum about the path Gollum had just told the hobbits he knew about. He asked Gollum what he would see above him that he would want to hide from. Sam was not quite in this conversation.
8. Chapter 4: "I do not think the Captain will leave you here, Master Samwise," he said. "But you shall see." Which of these four people said this?

Answer: Mablung

Faramir was the Captain and had left to fight. Anborn comes into the next chapter when he sees something he couldn't define well, and said that it was maybe a squirrel. Then, in the chapter after that, he finds Gollum fishing in the Forbidden Pool. Damrod was the other guard watching over Sam and Frodo, he just didn't speak up at the time.
9. Chapter 8: "I thought you said there was a tunnel," said ______."Isn't there a tunnel or something to go through?" Tell me who said this.

Answer: Sam

Sam was asking Gollum about the tunnel. This took place after Gollum, Frodo and Sam left Faramir's company. Frodo was quiet because he was weary of the ring. By this point it was growing heavier on his mind and heart.
10. Last Question from chapter 10 - tell me which character stated this: "Orders to you. I'm in command of this pass. So speak civil. What's your report?"

Answer: Shagrat

Grishnakh and Ugluk are not involved at all with this portion of "The Two Towers". They were two of the Orcs that had captured Merry and Pippin. Shagrat was responding with this quote to the question Gorbag had asked.
