Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was older - Roger or JP?

Answer: Roger

Roger was the older of the two boys who lived in a foster home just a few minutes away from Angel Stadium. His dad told him that the only way that they could be a family again, was if the California Angels won the pennant. The Angels were in last place in the American League West division, so Roger prayed that God would help them win.
JP was Roger's best friend in the movie, and went with Roger to the Angels' games, but couldn't see the real angels. Roger was the only one who prayed to them, and was the only one who could see them.
2. In the first game we see the Angels play, who was the starting pitcher?

Answer: Frank Gates

The Angels' manager, George Knox, took Gates out of the game, which made Gates very unhappy. This then started a fight between Knox and Gates, and afterwards, both were ejected from the game. This showed how disorganized the Angels were.
3. Which of these is NOT one of the things Wally said that Wit Bass had done in the dugout during the season?

Answer: Eat worms

This was what the announcers, Ranch and Wally, were discussing as Wit Bass took the mound in one of the Angels' games:

RANCH - "Wit Bass takes the mound with his trademark slide, his oddball antics are by now well known to the fans."

WALLY - "That's right, Ranch. This season alone, we've seen him lick dirt, eat bugs, and floss his catcher's teeth, in the dugout."

RANCH - "None of that may I add seems to have helped his pitching. He's 2-11."

This again, showed how bad the Angels were. Bass only had two wins and 11 losses in the season.
4. Who was the Angels player who had his bat break into splinters on his game-winning home run, and what position did he play?

Answer: Mesmer - Catcher

The bat broke because an angel helped Mesmer hit the ball out of the ballpark. This not only broke Mesmer's bat, but the Angels' losing streak as well. Mesmer also got only his 2nd hit in 27 at-bats with that home run.
5. Which team did the Angels play when Mel Clark got his first start of the season?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

In Clark's first start, the angels Roger prayed to helped Clark beat the Tigers. Then he got better as the season went along, and didn't need their help as much. This also held true for the entire Angels team.
6. The Chicago White Sox were in the American League West division in this movie.

Answer: True

The White Sox were the defending champions in that division as well. However, Mel Clark led the Angels to a pennant victory over Chicago, as Roger's angels helped the California Angels win as well.
7. Who was the Angels player who hit the game-winning hit - with the angels' help - against the Oakland A's?

Answer: Danny Hemmerling

Roger told Knox to put Hemmerling in because an angel was rubbing his shoulders. Knox hesitated, but put him in. Then, on a 0-2 pitch, an angel slowed the ball down so Hemmerling could hit it. When he did, a whole bunch of angels kept the ball away from the Oakland players and allowed Hemmerling to score.
8. In one of the Angels' games we see, them playing the Oakland A's. One of the Angels' batters hit a game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth. Roger's angels kept the ball away from Oakland's defense. How many errors did the A's commit in this game?

Answer: 19

The errors kept adding up as the umpires tried to figure out how the ball "moved on its own". The final tally of Oakland errors was 19.
9. What was the nickname of the last batter in the game where the Angels won the pennant?

Answer: Hit or Die

Kit "Hit or Die" Kesey was the last batter the Angels faced in the movie. He hit a soft line drive to the mound and Mel Clark dove to catch the ball. He caught the ball for the last out of the game... and the pennant victory.
10. How many pitches did Mel Clark throw in the last game against the Chicago White Sox?

Answer: 160

Late in the game, in the top of the ninth inning, Wally said, "His arm has to be tired, he's thrown 156 pitches." If you then count the number of pitches after that, he threw 4 more, for a total of 160.
