Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first rape victim, going strictly by Scripture? (Genesis 34)

Answer: Dinah

The first rape victim in Scripture was Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah. According to Scripture, she was defiled by Shechem. After she was defiled, a bloody massacre took place with Dinah's brothers killing every male in Shechem's hometown and every woman and child taken captive and every house plundered.

The massacre took place after Dinah's brothers convinced the males in Shechem's city they should circumcise themselves. According to Genesis 34:25, when the men of Shechem were still in pain, Dinah's two brothers, Simeon and Levi, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, "killing every male."
2. Tamar tricked her father-in-law Judah into impregnating her by pretending she was a prostitute. What are the names of Judah's two sons she had been previously married to? (Genesis 38:6-8)

Answer: Er and Onan

Previously, Tamar had been married to Judah's two sons -- Er and Onan. However, both men were struck dead by God because of their wickedness, according to Scripture.

After the two sons died, Judah apparently thought Tamar was a prostitute when he met up with her along the side of a road and as a result of the union, she gave birth to twins Perez and Zerah. (Scripture reports her face was covered during intercourse.) About three months later, when it was reported Tamar was pregnant and proclaimed a prostitute, Judah announced she should be brought out and "burned to death."

However, Judah had to do some serious backpedaling when Tamar was able to prove he was actually the man who had impregnated her. (Genesis 38:18 states Judah had given Tamar his "seal and its cord, and the staff in his hand" as a pledge before he he had sexual intercourse with her. When she was about to be put to death, she was able to produce Judah's pledge to her and her life was spared.)

The births of Perez and Zerah are told in Genesis 38:29-30. They are the second set of twins mentioned in the Old Testament. The first set was Esau and Jacob, the sons of Isaac and Rebekah.

Tamar's name is mentioned in Matthew 1:3 in the genealogy of Christ.
3. According to Genesis 19:30-38, what drunken man impregnated his two daughters?

Answer: Lot

Lot impregnated his two daughters while he was drunk, as per Genesis 19:30-38. According to Scripture, Lot's two unnamed daughters deliberately got him drunk to trick him into impregnating them. The young women thought their actions were justified as there were no other men for them in the area and they wanted to preserve their father's blood line, according to Scripture.

Scripture states both women gave birth to boys. The oldest daughter called her son Moab, the ancestor of the Moabites, while the youngest daughter gave birth to Ben-Ammi, ancestor of the Ammonites.
4. According to Genesis 35:22, what son of Jacob slept with his father's concubine Bilhah?

Answer: Reuben

The account of Reuben sleeping with Bilhah, his father's concubine, appears in Genesis 35:22. Scripture is short on details, but the verse states Jacob found out about the tryst and was "very angry".

Bilhah was originally Rachel's handmaiden, as per Genesis 29:29. However, Rachel was unable to conceive for the longest time, and gave permission to her husband Jacob to sleep with Bilhah to produce children. Jacob and Bilhah were the parents of two sons, Dan and Naphtali.
5. What was the name of the man who raped his half sister Tamar? (2 Samuel 13:10-22)

Answer: Amnon

The account of Amnon, the son of David and Ahinoam, raping Tamar, the daughter of David and Maacah, is found in 2 Samuel 13:1-18.

According to Scripture, Amnon was hopelessly in love with Tamar and pretended to be sick in bed and set things up to have Tamar serve him food. While Tamar was serving Amnon, he forced himself upon her.

Later, Absalom, a full brother of Tamar, would kill Amnon, as per 2 Samuel 13:19-29.
6. What prostitute from the Old Testament has her name listed in the genealogy of Christ? (Matthew 1:5)

Answer: Rahab

The story of Rahab the prostitute can be found in the second and sixth chapters of Joshua. Because she harbored two spies from the Israelite camp, Rahab and her family were spared when Joshua and his armed men succeeded in making the walls of Jericho fall down, just as the LORD told them in Joshua 6:2-5.

Rahab's name appears in Matthew 1:5 as part of the genealogy of Jesus and she is also saluted in Hebrews 11:31 for her "faith".
7. What's the name of the man who was so outraged when he APPARENTLY saw an Israelite man having sexual intercourse with a Moabite woman he thrust a spear into the man's back that it went through him and killed the woman beneath him as well? (Numbers 25)

Answer: Phinehas

Phinehas is the correct answer. According to Scripture, the Israelites, before entering the Promised Land, were camped in Acacia Grove and "the people began to commit harlotry" with the women of Moab. Scripture states the Moabite women were successful in getting Israelite men to bow down to their gods and the "anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel." As a result, Phinehas became convinced it was time for action.

Numbers 25:6-8 tells of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar and the grandson of Aaron, taking a javelin and going into the man's tent "and thrusting both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body."

While there is no conclusive proof, it is believed by many theologians the man and the woman were having sex when Phinehas killed them. This belief is based on the fact the man and the woman were both killed with one thrust of a spear by Phinehas.

Scripture states the man Phinehas killed was Zimri the son of Salu. Meanwhile, the woman's name was Cozbi the daughter of Zur.
8. What son of an Israelite king staged a coup attempt and in a bid to prove he was in charge slept with his father's concubines on the top of the palace "in sight of all Israel." (2 Samuel 16:21-22)

Answer: Absalom

Absalom is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Ahithophel, who was an advisor to King David changed his allegiance to Absalom in the midst of a bloody coup attempt. One of the things Ahithophel advised Absalom to do was to sleep with his father's concubines to show to the nation he was in charge.

2 Samuel 16:21-22, in the NKJV explains things this way: "And Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Go in to your father's concubines, whom he has left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.' So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the top of the house, and Absalom went in to his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel."

Scripture goes on to tell of the death of Absalom during a civil war battle, ending the coup attempt and David becoming king of a united nation again.
9. What judge of Israel slept with a Gentile prostitute? (Judges 16:1)

Answer: Samson

In addition to having an affair with a prostitute, Samson, at the time of his demise was living with Delilah who was not his wife.

Judges 16:1 tells of Samson seeing a harlot in Gaza and having sexual intercourse with her. Then Verse 4 tells of him falling in love with Delilah, a Gentile woman from the Valley of Sorek.

Delilah was bribed by Philistine judges to find out the secret to Samson's immense strength. After finding out the secret to his strength was his long hair, Delilah made arrangements to have Samson's hair cut. Substantially weakened, Samson ended up being taken into captivity.

Meanwhile, Judges 14:1 tells of Samson being married to an unnamed woman from Timnah. However, the chapter goes on to explain things didn't work out and "Samson's wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man."
10. Paul, in one of the thirteen books he is credited with writing, expressed anger and amazement that a man who was a member of the early church was sleeping with his father's wife. What was the name of the city in which the incident took place?

Answer: Corinth

The correct answer is Corinth, a city in Greece. According to Wikipedia, Corinth is about 78 kilometres (48 miles) west of Athens.

In 1 Corinthians 5:1, Paul writes about an unnamed man sleeping with his father's wife, who is also not named. The immorality was defiling the church, Paul said.

Paul goes on to state the man should be removed from the church. There is no mention of what should happen to the woman, leading a number of theologians to believe she was not a believer.

Paul was apparently prompted to write 1 Corinthians after he received a report from Chloe's household about "contentions" in the church at Corinth.
