Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of Israel's great judges' names means "bee"?

Answer: Deborah

In the Bible, names weren't given because they were cute or popular. Sometimes people were named after a Biblical hero or a family member but often their names told about person's nature, like Adam (of the earth); or their character, like Jacob (deceiver), or their destiny, like Jesus (He saves).

Just how "bee"fitting is Deborah's name? She was the only female judge mentioned among the great judges of Israel. She held her court under a palm tree near her home. Deborah, along with Barak, raised up an army and led it to victory over Sisera's 900-chariot army, ending 20 years of cruel oppression by the Canaanites.

To learn more about this wise and industrious woman, read Judges Chapters
5 and 6.
2. God sent ten plagues against Egypt to bring about Israel's release from slavery. The third plague God sent was lice, throughout all the land of Egypt. The fourth plague God sent was flies, into all the land of Egypt except for one place. What was that place?

Answer: Land of Goshen

The land of Goshen was given to the Israelites 400 years earlier by a previous Pharaoh, when Joseph brought his family from Canaan to rescue them from the famine there. Beginning with this plague, all the remaining plagues would not fall on the land of Goshen where the Israelites lived.
3. "So I will restore to you the _______ that the swarming ______ has eaten." (Joel 2:25) Which words complete the quote from the New King James Version?

Answer: Years, locust

There had been devastating swarms of locusts invading the land of Judah. Joel saw this as a judgement from God for the sinfulness of the people. Joel sent out an urgent call for repentance and fasting for everyone, from the priest of the temple to even nursing mothers and their babies.

Then Joel used this promise to encourage the people not to lose hope that God would restore what had been lost.
4. Leviticus 11:20 warns the Israelites that flying insects that walk "on all fours" are to be detestable to them. What did God tell the Israelites to do with any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, or grasshopper?

Answer: Eat them

"Of these you may eat: any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest." This may be found in Leviticus 11:22 (NIV).
5. In the Book of Proverbs, who is told to consider the way of ants and be wise?

Answer: A sluggard

"Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest." (Proverbs 6:6-8, NIV)
6. John the Baptist is reported to have eaten locusts. What secretion from a very beneficial insect is he said to have dipped them in?

Answer: Bee honey

False prophets often lived in palaces and flattered kings, but John the Baptist was not that kind of prophet.

"Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locust and wild honey." (Mark 1:6, NKJV)

John also spoke against King Herod's illicit marriage, which eventually cost him his head.
7. When Jesus told his disciples that they would be able to trample on serpents and scorpions, this was part of a lesson in which he was trying to teach them what?

Answer: They would have power over Satan.

"And he [Jesus] said to them, 'I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.'"
(Luke 10:18-19, NKJV)
8. "There are four little things on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise: The ____ are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer; ... The ____ have no king, yet they all advance in ranks; The ____ skillfully grasps with its hands, and it is in kings' palaces." Which insects fill in the blanks in this quote from Proverbs 30:24-28 (NKJV)?

Answer: Ant, locust, spider

I omitted one of the four things because it wasn't an insect. It is found in verse 26, "The rock badgers are a feeble folk, yet they make their homes in the crags."

Solomon is credited with writing most of the proverbs, but this particular chapter of Proverbs is written by Argur. Argur was not a Hebrew but was a believer in the Hebrew God.
9. Jesus taught that people shouldn't store up their treasures on earth for rust and moths to destroy, but what did Isaiah say moths would do to his adversaries?

Answer: Eat them

"Surely the Lord God will help me; who is he who will condemn me? Indeed they will all grow old like a garment; The moth will eat them up." (Isaiah 50:9, NKJV)
10. The Bible describes these insects as swarming, chewing, bristling and invading armies. What are these very destructive pest?

Answer: Locusts

A dark cloud of locusts descending on the land was an awesome and fearful sight, and were often seen as warnings of an impending judgement from God and an appeal to turn back to him.
