Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start "in the beginning." In Genesis, Chapter 3, Eve is tempted by the serpent to eat of the fruit of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Then she shares the tree's fruit with her husband Adam. Genesis states, "Then the eyes of both of them were opened." With the new knowledge bestowed on them from this fruit, what sin do they first believe they have committed?

Answer: Nakedness

Genesis 3:7 states: "Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings." By the way, the author of Genesis never states specifically what kind of fruit grew from this tree, though many have decided that it was an apple.
2. After forty days of rain, Noah sent forth a raven to retrieve evidence that the flood had receded; however, the raven never returned. Then Noah elected to use a dove. On the dove's second trip, it returned with the branch of what fruit tree?

Answer: olive

Genesis 8:11 clearly claims that the dove brought back the branch of an olive. The olive is, of course, a tree native to the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. The edible fruits are indeed fruits, not vegetables, as some mistakenly believe. The image of a dove carrying an olive branch has become known the world over as a symbol of peace.
3. The Hebrews that Moses had delivered from Egyptian enslavement were always complaining as they trekked across the desert. At one point, they were griping about the lack of food. Numbers 11:5 informs its readers that the Israelites actually began wishing they were back in Egypt where they had fish, cucumbers, leeks, onions, garlic, and which fleshy, watery fruits of the cucumis genus?

Answer: melons

I can see why they wanted to return to Egypt--fish, cucumbers, and leeks, oh my! Anyway, Moses seems to have caught the complaining bug himself as he turned to God with questions basically like, "What am I supposed to do with these people?" God eventually answered with showers of manna and quail.

The melon, most likely a cantaloupe or muskmelon variety, was a popular food of ancient Egypt, and its varieties remain popular around the world today. They are quite healthy, containing vitamin C and potassium and having very low fat content.
4. At the end of Deuteronomy, Moses sings a song! At one point (32:10, to be exact), Moses sings the earliest recorded mentioning of a popular expression. What popular expression am I talking about?

Answer: the apple of his eye

The exact origin of this expression is probably from the Old English, who referred to the pupil of the eye as an apple because they believed it to be spherical and solid, somewhat like an apple. Naturally, one's pupil would be a cherished possession, as the phrase "apple of my eye" currently means.

The translators of the English Bible obviously opted for an English idiom at this point in the book of Deuteronomy to explain how much God cherishes his people, as the original Hebrew makes no mention at this point of any word equivalent to an English word for apple, or any other kind of fruit for that matter. An "apple of discord" comes from Greek mythology, a story about a vengeful Eris who threw an apple into the midst of the petty Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite after telling them the fruit belonged to "the most beautiful." A "bowl of cherries" more than likely achieved popularity due to an Ethel Merman song "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" from the 1931 musical "Scandals." "Grapes of Wrath" appears originally in Julia Ward Howe's "Battle Hymn of the Republic." However, "the winepress of God's wrath" is a phrase that occurs in Revelation 14:19.
5. In II Samuel, David has to flee from the insurrection led by his own disloyal son Absalom. While seeking refuge at the top of the Mount of Olives (another fruit reference), David is visited by Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, the son of David's best friend Jonathan. Among the nourishment Ziba brings David are "one hundred clusters of" what particular dried fruit?

Answer: raisins

Second Samuel 16:1 mentions that Ziba brought David "two hundred loaves of bread, one hundred clusters of raisins, one hundred summer fruits, and a skin of wine." Jonathan was the son of David's enemy Saul; however, David and he had been like brothers to each other.

After Jonathan died during the war between David's and Saul's forces, David showed mercy and kindness on Jonathan's son Mephibosheth, despite his having been on the side of David's enemy. Mephibosheth returns kindness to David in this part of Second Samuel. Raisins were an excellent food choice to send for nourishment; not only do they have a long "shelf life," but they contain some protein and fiber and are very rich in antioxidants.
6. In what book of the Bible would one find the following romantic verse: "Your lips are like a strand of scarlet, / And your mouth is lovely. / Your temples behind your veil / Are like a piece of pomegranate"?

Answer: Song of Solomon

The above verse is from Song of Solomon 4:3. Solomon's love song sung by a king and his Shulamite shepherdess bride is rich with metaphor and imagery, much of it relying on fruit. Another verse, 7:8, contains these words: "Let now your breasts be like clusters of the vine, / The fragrance of your breath like apples, / The roof of your mouth like the best wine."
7. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, their writers record a parable told by Christ that relies on a certain fruit tree. Matthew 24:32 states: "When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near." What fruit tree does Christ use to explain that his followers should be constantly vigilant for the signs of his second coming?

Answer: fig

In the Parable of the Fig Tree, Christ suggests to his disciples that while they will not know the exact date of his return, they will be able to know that he is approaching because certain signs will be visible, just as one knows that summer is near when one sees the beginning of new leaves on a fig tree.
8. In what book of the Bible would one find a verse like this: "And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, 'Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe'"?

Answer: Revelation

As stated earlier, this verse coupled with its successor--Revelation 14:18-19--probably inspired the creation of the phrase "grapes of wrath." These particular verses refer to God's wrath being poured out on the earth after the 144,000 elect have ascended from earth and before the destruction of Babylon occurs.

While sickles are, of course, not used to gather grapes, the harvest and death imagery associated with a sickle certainly work well here.
9. In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul lists what he calls "the fruit of the spirit." Which of these is NOT included among those "fruits"?

Answer: hope

Paul writes: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."
10. In Matthew 7:16-17, Jesus explains: "You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit." Jesus used this analogy to help his followers know how to tell the difference between which two kinds of people?

Answer: false and true prophets

These words come from The Sermon on the Mount, the radical collection of Christ's teachings that often run contrary to the strict but spiritless adherence to the Law that had previously been taught. Shortly after the verses in the question, Jesus points out that there will be many who will claim to do things in Christ's name, but they will not all truly possess his spirit and so will be cast away from him.
