Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The year was 1984. The place was Los Angeles and the event was the Olympics 400m hurdles. Which Indian athlete lost to Christeana Cojocaru of Romania by 1/100th of second and placed 4th?

Answer: P. T. Usha

P. T. Usha qualified for the finals by topping the semifinals. But she faltered. For only 1/100th of second he could not win a medal. It never happened.
2. Xin Wang was the woman. The venue was London in the 2012 Olympics. The event was Badminton Bronze-medal match. What happened to Xin Wang that kept her from winning a medal, despite being world number 2 at that time?

Answer: She injured her leg.

Xin Wang was a Chinese Badminton player. She was defeated by Li Xuerui, of her own country. She had to play the semi-final match against Saina Nehwal of India. She won the first game 21-18 and was leading the second game 1-0 but unfortunately she hurt her leg and decided not to play. As a result she could not win a bronze medal. It never happened!
3. South Africa was a fast cricket developing nation during the 1990's. They reached the semi-final of the World Cup 1999 where they had to play against Australia. Who won the match?

Answer: The match was tied

Australia batted first and scored 213-10 in 49.2 overs. South Africa too scored 213-10 in 49.4 overs. That unfortunate run out of Allan Donald proved very costly for South Africa. As Australia had a better run-rate ( a difference of only two balls ) they qualified for the finals. The advancement of South Africa to the final never happened.
4. Joydeep Karmar- the Indian shooter. He, much to the amazement of the world, qualified for the 50m Rifle Prone Event Final in the London Olympics. He continued his good form in the finals but was placed forth only for how many points?

Answer: 1.9

Joydeep Karmakar was not even in the top 10 in the rankings of the shooting event. To much astonishment he qualified for the finals with 4th place. He scored the 3rd highest in the finals but the top three had much higher scores in the Qualification Round. Rajmond Debevec won the Bronze with 701 points and Joydeep had 699.1 points.

The winning of a medal by Joydeep in the Olympics never happened.
5. Mexico vs Brazil- the 2012 Olympics Football Finals. Who won the match in the allotted time and by what margin? (One's dream was destroyed!)

Answer: Mexico 2-1

Brazil was at the time ranked 11 and Mexico was ranked 19. But Mexico stunned the five-time World Champions with 2 goals to one. Brazil had won the World Cup 5 times but had never won an Olympic gold by 2012. Brazil's best perfomance was the silver medal, which they had won twice. So, the winning of a gold by Brazil in the 2012 Olympics never happened.
6. Spain vs Portugal- Euro Cup 2012 Semi final. It was a very tight contest. The winning of Euro Cup for the first time never happened for which country?

Answer: Portugal

It was a very tight match. The match was tied and went into shootout. Captain Ronaldo of Portugal was chosen by the team to be sent last to score the winning goal. But he did not get a chance to score as Spain won the penalty shootout 4-2. Spain then went on to win the tournament.
7. Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, the World Cup Cricket 2011 Semi Final. It was an unexpectedly tight match. New Zealand was at the time 7th in rankings, but they defeated World No. 2 South Africa in the quarter finals for a shocking entry to the semifinals. Sri Lanka was the dominant side in most of the match, but in the last few overs New Zealand made the match more exciting. Who won the match at last?

Answer: Sri Lanka

New Zealand, as mentioned, was the No. 7 team, while Sri Lanka was the No.4 team. But New Zealand fought bravely. They had entered the semifinals five times before but had never gone to the finals. They had a chance. But they were defeated by Sri Lanka by 5 wickets. So, the entering of New Zealand in the World Cup Finals did not happen.
8. Spain vs Netherlands- the FIFA World Cup 2010 finals. It was a very tight match as expected. For Spain it was the first final and for Netherlands it was the third. The Netherlands had never won the World Cup before, nor had Spain. Whose winning the World Cup for the first time never happened?

Answer: Netherlands

Spain won the match 1-0. It was shocking for Netherlands as they had been Runners Up before but never the Champions.
9. The men's Triathlon event in the London Olympics 2012. There was a close contest, but who finally won?

Alistair had a time of 1:46:25 sec while Javier took 1:46:36. The winning of gold medal by the Spanish did not happen.
