Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first turn you have to do in the level five beam routine?

Answer: swing turn

This is one of the hardest skills in the routine, almost everyone wobbles on it, or doesn't kick above horizontal on both sides. In a swing turn you kick horizontal in front of you, and swing the leg behind you, at least horizontal, turning around while you do this.
2. What is the first acrobatic skill in the routine?

Answer: hand stand

In the handstand, you must reach vertical, and stand there for at least one second.
3. How high must you go in your handstand?

Answer: vertical

You have to kick all the way up in your handstand to reach vertical. You have to stay vertical for at least one second.
4. What skill(s) come before your leap?

Answer: arabesque, scale, arabesque

On the arabesque, you raise your leg behind you, for the scale you raise it further to lower your chest, then you bring it back up for the last arabesque.
5. How many steps do you take before the split leap?

Answer: 3

Some people prefer to walk for these steps, but the code of points also says you can run. A split leap is where you take a few steps, three in this case, and leap up into the air with your legs in a split, which in this routine has to be at least 90 degrees.
6. What kind of turn comes after the split leap?

Answer: squat turn

A squat turn is where you go into a lock in relevé. You then bend your knees down into a squat, and do a 180 degree turn. You have to keep your shoulders back, head and chest up, and your arms tight by your sides.
7. What type of acro skill is used in the dismount?

Answer: handstand

In level 5, you cartwheel straight into a side handstand, and come down on the other side of the beam, but in level six you must go into a regular handstand, do a 1/4 pirouette, and then come down.
8. Overall, how many turns are in the Level 5 beam routine?

Answer: 6

There are: swing turn, squat turn, two pivot half turns, a pivot quarter turn after the handstand, and a half coupé turn.
9. What is a common mistake made by many gyms when a gymnast falls off the beam in a USAG sanctioned event?

Answer: Saluting the judge before remounting the beam

USAG is the acronym for USA gymnastics.
10. In the Olympic order of events, where is beam?

Answer: third

No matter what event you start on, you will always go in this order at meets in any country.
