Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does it mean to 'deep six' something?

Answer: Throw it away

Originally, 'deep six' was the call of the leadsman signifying that the water is more than 6 fathoms deep, but less than seven. Now, it's a euphemism for throwing something overboard or away.
2. An informal hearing for minor offenses by the unit, ship or station commander is called a "Captain's ..." what?

Answer: Mast

A "Captain's Mast" is a non-judicial disciplinary procedure, usually meted out by unit commanders and not the same as a court martial. Historically, it would have been held at the base of the "Main Mast" of a sailing vessel.
3. If facing forward, the right side of the ship is also known as what?

Answer: Starboard

Aft is towards or near the stern, stern is the back part and port is the left side.
4. What rating are you if you're an 'Anchor clanker'?

Answer: Boatswain's Mate

The history of the Boatswain's Mate is as old as the Navy itself. From the beginning of seafaring ships, there's been a need for able-bodied men to lower the thick masts, swab the decks and pipe 12 o'clock reports. This need formed into the Boatswain's Mate rate in 1797.
5. What is a 'jarhead'?

Answer: U.S. Marine

Also known as a bullet sponge or gyrene.
6. What is a spook?

Answer: Cryptologic technician

Cryptologic technician ratings (CTT, CTA, CTM, CTO, CTR, CTI) work with some of the most sophisticated and complex systems the Navy has to offer in performance of their mission. All of the CT career fields offer impressive training pipelines, excellent promotion opportunities and diverse job assignments.
7. In military jargon, what does GQ stand for?

Answer: General Quarters

'General Quarters, all hands man your battle stations' aka something big is about to happen, you'd better drop whatever you're doing and get to your space or you're in BIG TROUBLE!
8. What is the nickname of the Navy base in Cuba?

Answer: Gitmo

The U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was established in 1903.
9. Of the following choices, what are you if you wear a crow?

Answer: Petty Officer

The rate insignia of a USN Petty Officer (E-4 through E-6), so-called because of the eagle surmounting the rate chevrons.

(Editor's Note: Chief Petty Officer (plus Senior and Master Chief) insignia also bears the eagle, and is also periodically referred to as a crow... although not as frequently as the standard Petty Officer rates.)
10. What is a Mustang?

Answer: Former Enlisted Officer

An officer who has 'come up through the ranks', i.e. started out as an enlisted man and earned a commission.
