It's all good, Jo, but I'm kind of confused. You say "nobody beats Disturbed" as if we are talking about who is the best band, which is obviously not the issue here. I mean, it just doesn't make much sense to me that you should say that, but yet give no indication as to what particular Disturbed song you had in mind where the singer - is it Dave? - sings "rock and roll" cooler and more rocky and rolly than Dan. I think that guy has a pretty cool voice and they have a pretty cool sound with lots of cool tunes, so believe me, I have a totally open mind here. Any particular song you had in mind?

One thing that dawned on me after giving it some serious thought. There is a very close second to Dan, as far as strictly the singing of the words "rock and roll" and nothing more. Just keep in mind that this is just my opinion, for one thing, and another is that I have not heard every song out there. Anyway, it's when that one guy from Dr. Hook screams out "rock and roll!!" in The Cover of the Rolling Stone. Quite boss-rockingly rocky and rolly indeed! :-) But I still give this one specific crown to Dan.

You know, even as big of a Priest fanatic as I am, I remain quite open-minded about music, and when it comes right down to it, about most things in life as well. I'm not one of these people who think that their favorite band has the best drummer who ever lived, the best bass player who ever lived, the best guitarist who ever lived, the best singer who ever lived, and has made all the best albums ever made complete with all the best songs ever released, and they also put on a better concert than any band who ever existed. That's just a tad bit ridiculous. What I'm saying is, I have never let my "fandom" or "fanaticism" blind me to anything. Even Rob Halford sings "Let's rock and roll" in Parental Guidance, which is a pretty cool song with pretty cool lyrics, but I still cast my vote for Dan on this one particular topic.

Anyway, Jo, don't keep me hanging, tell me which Disturbed song you had in mind! :-)

Nazareth gets my vote, pretty much every time. (I'm even starting to like their cover of Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight." I'd love to know the story behind why they decided to cover a Joni song in the first place, though, other than those great lyrics.

"I'm drinkin' sweet champagne
Got the headphones up high
Can't numb you out
Can't drum you out of my mind"

Um, kids? There are three comments now.

I'd toss in my own comment(s) if I could remember my YouTube password. Probably a good thing I can't.

(Completely off-topic, but if you want to watch something funny, watch Sebastian Bach's "What's In My Bag?" It shows up in my Youtube Feed, because I love him. I'd love to have lunch with this guy, and maybe go shopping with him. It's been a long time since I've laughed until I was doubled over, trying to breathe. I just know Bach could do that for me. This guys has nothing but fun, ALL the time.)

I know I've posted this Nazareth live video somewhere before (probably over in Kevin's Blog,) but now I'm on a Nazareth kick, so here it comes. This is one son of a... gun I would gladly mess with. Bring it on, Dan.

Oh wait... maybe I should make certain I'm in the right thread.

"Hair Of The Dog" by Nazareth
Live -- 1976

As much as I love all 6'6" of Sebastian Bach, with that waist-length blonde hair, Big Dan gives him a run for his money. This video! That hair! That silky-smooth chest! Those SHOES! This song, live, and this GUY, live, especially when he smiles, makes me tingly all over, while also making me happy when skies are blue. All it needs is MORE COWBELL:

"Heartbreaker, soul shaker
I've been told about you
Steamroller, midnight shoulder
What they been sayin' must be true

Red hot mama, velvet charmer
Time's come to pay your dues

Now you're messin' with a

Now you're messin' with a son of a b---h
Now you're messin' with a
(A son of a b---h)
Now you're messin' with a son of a b---h

Talking jiving poison ivy
You ain't gonna cling to me
Man taker bone faker
I ain't so blind I can't see

Red hot mama, velvet charmer
Time's come to pay your dues

Now you're messin' with a

I don't know, but based on that chorus, I think he means it...

I can't find anything telling me Dan McCafferty's height, but he looks tall, so I'm going with that. He's Scottish, he plays the bagpipes (be still my heart) and he retired from touring in 2013 after collapsing on stage in Canada. That's sad. I think he's okay now, though. He's also married with kids, but this is merely a crush I have on him, so it's all harmless.

And you just know he's a Viking. And I forgot to mention how much I love his hips in that video. I prefer to watch my music while I listen to it. Dan from 1976 should have been MINE! (And since he also knows "Love Hurts," he might be The Perfect Man.) I might have to do a "Story From Song Titles From An Album" using a Nazareth album. Their live album "Then and Now" is one of those perfect albums. And it's LIVE! Back when music was music. Sigh...

So, now I know all about Nazareth doing a cover of Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight." Wanna know, too?

This is a pretty heart-warming story:

"This Flight Tonight," a track from Joni Mitchell's 1971 album "Blue," was covered by Scottish rock band Nazareth, peaked at number 11 and is better known in the UK than the original. Dan McCafferty, Nazareth's lead singer, said, "It's a good song and if you start with a good song it should be able to be played any way you want it."

The song was too good to get away which were certainly the thoughts of Dan McCafferty. He explained how they came to know the song. "You know how you're on the road and everybody's got tapes? Well that song just kept showing up all the time on somebody's fave-raves tape, so eventually we decided to give it a go. Obviously we wanted to make it as far away from Joni as we possibly could, 'cause you could imagine how it would sound with me trying to sound like Joni Mitchell!" Pete Agnew, the band's bassist recalled, "We used to listen to Joni as we were travelling round in the van and 'This Flight Tonight ' was a big favourite. We decided to cover it because we only wanted to do cover versions on the basis that if you can change it enough, it becomes yours. If you can't change it, don't do it,"

What did Joni make of the rocked-up version? Agnew explained, "When she was recording at A&M, we were just starting an American tour, we all happened to be in the studio the day the single was released, so we were introduced to her and told her what we had done. She said, 'What, with a rock band?' When she heard it, she loved it." Once the song had made the UK chart, where it peaked at number 11, Joni paid the band a wonderful compliment. "She was playing a gig in London and told the audience: 'I'd like to open with a Nazareth song'!" remembered Agnew.

As for Nazareth, they are still touring and still play the song, loud and proud, "It's our finishing number," exclaimed McCafferty.

Excerpt taken from an interview/article by Jon Kutner, February 26, 2016 (I changed some of the wording.)

Hold on, I'm going to find a live video of Nazareth singing "This Flight Tonight" and post it, if I can find it. I've got it on a CD, but not sure if I can find it online.

Oh whoa! This is SO good!

"This Flight Tonight" -- Nazareth, Live 1975, Austrian TV

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9uvpr_gm64

"Look out the left" the captain said
"The lights down there that's where we'll land"
Saw a falling star burning
High above the Las Vegas sand

It wasn't the one that you gave to me
That night down south between the trailer
Not the early one that you wish upon
Not the northern one that guides in the sailors

You've got that touch so gentle and sweet
But you've got that look so critical
Can't talk to you, babe, you know I get so weak
Sometimes I think that love is just mythical

Up there's a heaven, down there's a town
Blackness everywhere a little light's shine
Blackness, blackness draggin' me down
Come on light a candle in this heart of mine

Star bright, star bright, you've got the lovin' that I like
Turn this crazy bird around
Should not have got on this flight tonight

I'm drinkin' sweet champagne, got the headphones up high
Can't numb you, can't drum you out of my mind

They're singin' -- "Goodbye baby,
Baby bye-bye,
Ooh! Love is blind"

Up go the flaps, down go the wheels
Hope you got your heat turned on, baby
Hope they've finally fixed your automobile
Hope it's better when we meet again, babe

Star bright, star bright, you've got the lovin' that I like
Turn this crazy bird around
Should not have got on this flight tonight
Should not have got on this flight tonight"

Now, let's compare it with Joni's version, since she wrote it:

"This Flight Tonight" by Joni Mitchell (Live at Carnegie Hall 1972)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmfT5YPWrr8

I think Joni rocks it more than Nazareth, she plays the holy heck out of that guitar, and her lyrics are more accurate, since she wrote the song. With a resounding applause!

However! I just found a live cover with Nazareth from 2007, and yow... (filmed at the Bang Your Head Festival Balingen 6/23/2007)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfU0P9dAWRs

Nazareth wins for rocking this song. Sorry, Joni. They just do. I found a live cover from 1985 that isn't as wild as the one from 2007. How is that even possible? But if you want to see Big Dan and Nazareth in 1985, here you go:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s80R8vJ1ojM

I wish Big Dan was still touring with them, and I wish they were showing up at Red Rocks this summer. What I wouldn't give to see these guys, live...

Everything is cool by all means, Jo. It just struck me odd that after I had suggested the idea of any possible song out there where the singer sings "rock and roll" in a cooler fashion than Dan, you had responded with "nobody beats Disturbed" but you didn't say anything about any particular song where the singer would have possibly accomplished this amazing feat. I'm assuming now that you never had any particular song in mind to begin with, which is pretty much what I figured from the beginning. ;-) Yeah, everything is quite cool, yo.

Speaking of that, let's talk about remakes for a bit. I've always been the kind of person who just loves to wander off the beaten path in life, and as a result, I am so very different from most people about so very, very many different things. However, when it comes to remakes and cover songs, I would say that I go along with most people and feel that nothing beats the original in most cases. In fact, and I have put considerable thought into this figure, I would say that I like maybe 5 remakes out of a hundred more than I do the original. After all, every song that has ever been written makes its own unique statement. Once that particular statement is made, it really can't be duplicated, but remakes really aren't about trying to "outdo" the original artist, are they? Of course they aren't. They are all about paying tribute and respect and admiration for the original artist, which is something that should be taken into consideration by all means.

The vast majority of music fans are going to like the original better simply because that's the one they heard first. Then there are the long list of reasons that are totally irrelevant. They don't like the remake because they don't like the outfits that are worn by the band who does it, or they don't like the other music that band makes, or they don't like this or that about that band. Please. Keep your eyeballs and your prejudices out of your earholes, people.

Wanna talk about open-mindedness for a sec? I don't think it's exactly a huge secret that I am a radical Priest fanatic until the day I get planted. With me liking 5 remakes out of a hundred better than the original, what do you suppose the odds would be that I would like a remake of a Priest tune better than the original? Well, it happened, but what about the odds of me feeling like it was actually the best job of any cover song I've ever heard in my entire life? Yeah, I never would have believed it myself if I hadn't heard it with my own ears, but it actually happened. I'm not gonna lie to myself about anything, what would be the point? Denial doesn't fly with me.

Anyway, that's a whole other story. In the meantime, I have a cover song here that's one of those 5 out of a hundred that I actually like better than the original, which was probably very likely to be the biggest hit that Brownsville Station ever had. Not only that, but it comes complete with a pretty cool and comical video. Most people will disagree with me as far as this cover being better than the original, but that's all okay with me because I've got a heck of a lot more grass under my feet than they do, which means I've been able to see things they've never seen. Wave that rock and roll banner to the very end, yo!

Without listening first, you like Brownsville Station singing "Smokin' In The Boys Room," right? Yeah, me too.

I like Bob Dylan singing "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" better than the cover by Guns n Roses.

However, I like "Live And Let Die" by Guns N Roses more than I like anything, really, by Paul McCartney and Wings.

I need to get off this thing and out of pain, but I'll think of more while I'm alternating ice and heat, and see what else I can come up with.

But first, I'm going to listen to the song you posted, but if it's not "Smokin'," I'll eat my keyboard. I think I may have heard B.S. in concert, but I might be thinking of someone else. I saw some crazy concerts when I lived in Tempe, Arizona -- some of them at ASU, and some of them in Phoenix. I'm really tired and my brain wants to shut down.

Oh. Sorry. I misread. I told you I was tired. You like Motley Crue's cover better. Not me! I do like their cover, but I don't like it better. Nice Japanese subtitles in the video, though, although now I'm not seeing them. Tell me you saw them, too? I may be more tired than I thought.

But come on, you have to admit, Nazareth doing a cover of a Joni Mitchell song is pretty out there. She's a folk singer, for cryin' out loud.

Now, I'm going to log out of here and alternate heat/ice and try to cool down and get out of pain, too. Wish me luck. But I'll think of more covers I either like better, or don't like better, and I'll come back later and let you know. Because I know you're dying to hear all about my opinions, right? Right. Byeeeeeeee for now.

P.S. I'd really like to hear the 5 covers you do like better than the originals, though. When I come back.

And speaking of being really tired, and great bands, did you know Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull fame is the father-in-law of Andrew Lincoln, the guy who plays Rick Grimes on "The Walking Dead?" They were both in an episode of "Ride With Norman Reedus" and Ian Anderson was SO ashamed of the way Andrew Lincoln couldn't handle his bike on their ride. It was mostly hilarious. Maybe you had to be there.

Haha! Ted is such a trip. A few of those cheerleaders were even smiling by the end of this. And the crowd was receptive, which is encouraging.

My boyfriend played Jimi's original version on the last day of our Senior year in High School during his one-hour radio show, blasting into the cafeteria (Oh My God! *Gasp!*) and almost didn't get to graduate. I don't suppose playing Alice Cooper's "School's Out" beforehand helped, preceded by Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2." I always have been a sucker for the "bad boys" and rebels, as long as they're also smart and funny. You know, like Bender from "The Breakfast Club"?

It almost turned into anarchy when the school found out how much trouble he was in.

"How come Andrew gets to get up? If he gets up, we'll all get up, IT'LL BE ANARCHY!"

"We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers! Leave them kids alone
Hey, teachers! Leave them kids alone
All in all it's just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall"
