Oh, Lord, Jen. Yeah, I've heard tons of tunes throughout my life that I assumed were originals that turned out to be covers, and that smoking hot Anthrax tune is on the list. It was several years after that came out, which is on my favorite Anthrax album, before I discovered it was actually a cover and not one of their own as I had assumed. I probably would have discovered it right after I had bought the CD if I had looked at the credits closely enough, but a lot of times I just don't pay attention to stuff like that and it gets by me. As far as bands coming out with tunes that I assumed were their own but were actually covers, I'd have to say Zeppelin has got the runaway lead on that on. I was in my 40s before I began discovering just how many of their songs are actually remakes of old blues tunes. I had already been aware of a good number of them but not nearly the number they actually have. They've got a pretty big bunch of them. I'm even guilty of that with my snuggly little beloved Priest Beast. They did a tune called Better By You Better Than Me from my fave Priest album (and very painful for me to admit, my second favorite heavy metal album) - Stained Class, that was a cover tune from some band that I have now forgotten the name of. Many years before I discovered that one. Same thing with a cover of an old Fleetwood Mac tune called The Green Manalishi that Priest did on Hell Bent For Leather and they also did a live version of that one on Unleashed in the East. There's at least one video on the net of them playing that one live as well. I guess the only two covers they ever did that I was aware were covers from the beginning were Diamonds and Rust from Joan Baez and Johnny B. Goode from Chuck Berry. That last one is an excellent video that's well worth checking out, especially if you like to watch people stage diving and crowd surfing and all that. Got lots of that going on from beginning to end! I suppose that for probably close to 10 years, the most shocking cover song I had ever discovered was a cover song was Rusty Cage by Soundgarden. By far my favorite Soundgarden tune that I've ever heard. It qualifies as being one of those songs I actually get adrenaline rushes from, and it's the only song I've ever heard by them that does that. Only serious, no-game-playing metal does that for me, and I hardly consider Soundgarden's music to be serious, no-game-playing metal. That is not criticism toward them in any way whatsoever, there are tons and tons of bands and songs that have absolutely nothing to do with metal. Anyway, I suppose it was probably about 7 or 8 years ago when I heard Johnny Cash doing that song on the jukebox at the little bar across the street from me. Never heard it before and I just automatically assumed that the Soundgarden version must have been a cover, but I soon discovered that it was the other way around. Cash was the one covering the Soundgarden tune. Completely blew my mind that Mr. Cash would ever cover a song like that. That remained my #1 mind-blower in the cover song department up until really not all that long ago, I guess maybe about 6 months ago. That's when I was knocked straight on my butt like never before when I discovered that Pat Give Me Metal or Give Me Death Boone had released an entire album quite a number of years ago that was all nothing but heavy metal covers. The whole album. Are you familiar with that crazy cat? That guy is just about as heavy metal as Doris Day at a church picnic on Easter Sunday, and here he is in a leather vest trying to look all tough and cool, and he's exploding all over everybody with all these metal cover tunes in an album that starts out with a Priest cover - You've Got Another Thing Coming. I wonder what in the world would have made him want to start things off with Priest out of all the heavy metal bands in the world? Hmmm...I just don't have a clue, Jen, that certainly is a big time stumper right there. ;-) Anyway, I'm still kind of shocked about that one. I mean, this is one of those guys who probably has never even farted in his entire life and he's Ramming it Down in a leather vest for the whole world to hear? Absolutely unbelievable. You should check this thing out sometime and just take a peek at the songs this maniac did. "In a Metal Mood" is the name of it. Pat Die With Your Boots On Boone. But is the Priestly cover my favorite on this explosive hellhammer? Sad to say, unfortunately not. If he had covered Painkiller or Ram it Down or Riding on the Wind or Delivering the Goods or quite a number of other Priestly masterPriests, it may well have been a different story. However, my crowned favorite on this one has got to be his demonically cutthroat, kill-or-be-killed version of Crazy Train by Ozzy. I'm sure you've been punched in the mouth by Ozzy's version before, but Pat Back Off Or Bleed Boone's version? Omg, Jen, you've gotta check this out.... https://tinyurl.com/y3cgz5w3 Reply #401. Woops. Up there in the 4th paragraph, I meant to say that there are tons of bands and songs "that I like" that have nothing to do with metal. Silly half-asleep me! :-p Reply #402. Aug 14 19, 7:12 PM |

Oh, sadwings, me too! If we went through every credit for every song from every album from every album we’ve ever owned… well, we wouldn’t have time to write on these boards! It’s interesting sometimes how many songs a band will cover. “Rusty Cage” was good, and I liked one of the comments where someone said “This is my Friday song when I cannot wait to leave work!” Crazy how “older” singers or bands cover newer songs and we assume they were the first to do it (I thought the same thing with “Hurt” that Johnny Cash covered). Hey, what did you think of Pat Boone’s cover of “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming”? (Whoops, sorry, I read further and saw what you thought… I’m sorry) Haha, that version of Crazy Train was coocoo! It’s safe to say I wasn’t expecting a version like that! Reminds me just a little of a cover I first heard in, ironically, a remake of a movie. “Dawn of the Dead.” Curious what Jo thinks of this cover of Disturbed (warning: NSFW song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at02Fvdhk2I Reply #403. Jen, you really are the rock and roll coolest. I really appreciate the way you always seem to check out the links I post. It really goes way above and beyond the vast majority of people here. Even when stuff isn't exactly your cup of tea, you still have only nice things to say about it. Anyway, here's something that's a little change of pace from my normal runaway freight trains on steroids. There is really nothing like a nice, romantic, tender-hearted love song, and this is one that you may possibly have never heard before. I don't think I've ever posted it anywhere but I really can't remember. Anyway, it comes equipped with the lyrics off to the right, if you are able to read them without getting a little misty-eyed like me whenever I hear this song. I was shocked to see that whoever posted the lyrics only got one single word wrong. They've got one line down as "You don't really love me, you just love me for what I am." Well, the second "love" should actually be "want" and it's pretty crystal clear. I just don't know what's wrong with these people who post song lyrics. Would you believe that my band and I can play this song and make it sound pretty much exactly like the original studio recording? In fact, this may actually be us playing it, I'm really not sure. :-p https://tinyurl.com/y6rp4oql Reply #405. Aug 23 19, 7:09 AM |

Aww, you’re sweet to say that, sadwings! I do try to listen to any song someone recommends or… I guess even mentions. How else will people find new music to love if they don’t give some a try? I also try to be respectful, and I very rarely find something I don’t like from people here and there (not you, just over all the years I’ve been on this site). I wish I could play the guitar! I also wish you could post a video on youtube of you playing! I liked that line “You had it made in the shade… don’t let that tree fall down on you.” Reply #406. Aug 23 19, 11:55 AM |

Yeah, that really is a great line in that Skynyrd song. :-p Here's a video of me playing the guitar for a few friends. It's close to 20 years old now and I was going by a different name than I go by now. I was also with a band that you may have even heard of before. Hee hee! Silly me. I don't really know how to play a guitar at all, Jen. I honestly never intended to make anyone think that I did. All the times that I've ever mentioned anything at all relating to that, I just kind of assumed you knew I was just joking around. Anyway, nope, I've never played the guitar in my life. Drums have always been my thing. Oh, hey, I just happen to have a video of me playing the drums right here in my pocket! :-) Just keep in mind that I'm really not very good at all. This is me just monkeying around for a few pals on what would pretty much be considered a little toy drum set. I also had a pretty bad case of arthritis, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome going on all at the same time when I did this, so just keep all that in mind as you watch this! https://tinyurl.com/y6m9wonh Reply #409. I heard this song today on the way home from the doctor, and had forgotten how much I love it. I always sing and rock out in the car -- I have no shame, even in rush hour traffic with the windows rolled down. No one can sing like Ann Wilson, but I gave it my best shot: "Magic Man" by Heart "Cold late night, so long ago When I was not so strong, you know A pretty man came to me Never seen eyes so blue You know, I could not run away It seemed we'd seen each other in a dream It seemed like he knew me He looked right through me Yeah Come on home, girl He said with a smile You don't have to love me yet Let's get high awhile But try to understand Try to understand Try, try, try to understand I'm a magic man Winter nights we sang in tune Played inside the months of moon Never think of never Let this spell last forever Well summer lover, passed to fall Tried to realize it all Mama says she's worried Growing up in a hurry Yeah Come on home, girl Mama cried on the phone Too soon to lose my baby yet My girl should be at home But try to understand Try to understand Try, try, try to understand He's a magic man, Mama Ohhhhh He's a magic man Come on home, girl He said with a smile I cast my spell of love on you A woman from a child But try to understand Try to understand Ohh ohh Try, try to understand Try, try, try to understand He's a magic man Oh yeah Ohhhh He got magic hands Come on home, girl He said with a smile You don't have to love me yet Let's get high awhile But try to understand Try to understand Try, try, try to understand He's a magic man" Here's a great live video of the Wilson Girls from... 1976?? I didn't know they went back this far! This is wildly psychedelic for this era, too. And hello -- he got magic hands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps7tVvQHLyo Reply #410. Aug 27 19, 8:41 PM |

Rock and roll, man! :-) That was a pretty cool video, Elle, I had never seen that before. Ann and I met each other on a rainy night by a total freak chance and she did a song about our experience together. The song was written by a guy - might have been one of the Heart guys, I'm really not sure - because Ann really wanted to write a song about it but I guess she was just totally beside herself about the whole experience and couldn't find the right words. Anyway, whatever you do, don't tell anybody about it. I wouldn't want to cause any problems for Ann. They even made it into a video. Check this out... https://tinyurl.com/yxt6ne4p Reply #411. Did you see that totally out of control Headbangers Ball thread I just started like some renegade social outcast? Been right around 20 hours now and I haven't even played a Skid Row video yet. Shame on me! I wish I could come up with one that you had never seen before but I'm sure there's no way that would ever happen. So since that's the case, you know which one of theirs I've got to start out with, don't ya? The very first one I ever saw from them and it just happened to be on Headbanger's Ball. I remember looking at my friend Troy and saying "Those guys are gonna go places, man!" I'll never forget that. I really miss that show. That reminds me of a cool 6-word thingy I can throw down, then I'm gonna go throw down that boss-rockin' video! :-) Reply #414. Aug 27 19, 10:56 PM |

Ann Wilson is a goddess, and Nancy kissing her guitar -- I don't even know what to say. I know it's total schmaltz, and there is so much wrong with that song and video, but I still just love it! I mean for God's sake, they made "love like strangers" in a hotel, which was "a place I knew well." But I love the way she sings, "Standing by the road, no umbrelllla, no coat." and then "So I pulllllled up along side, and I offered him a ride..." While I was driving home and heard "Magic Man," it was Twofer Tuesday, so they also played "Barracuda," a great song, but if they had played this song, I fear for all those people in traffic who might have looked over while I was singing and rocking out. When I'm singing along, and I always sing along, I have at least my left hand raised, and my head is bobbing back and forth to the music. Like I said, I have no shame: "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" by Heart "It was a rainy night when he came into sight Standing by the road, no umbrella, no coat So I pulled up along side, and I offered him a ride He accepted with a smile, so we drove for a while I didn't ask him his name, the lonely boy in the rain Fate tell me it's right, is this love at first sight Please don't make it wrong, just stay for the night All I wanna do is make love to you Say you will, you want me to All I wanna do is make love to you I got loving arms to hold on to So we found this hotel, it was a place I knew well We made magic that night, oh, he did everything right He brought the woman out of me, so many times, easily And in the morning when he woke, all I left him was a note I told him, "I am the flower, you are the seed We walked in the garden, we planted a tree Don't try to find me, please don't you dare Just live in my memory, you'll always be there" All I wanna do is make love to you One night of love was all we knew All I wanna do is make love to you I got loving arms to hold on to Oh, oooh, we made love Love like strangers All night long We made love Then it happened one day, we came round the same way You can imagine his surprise, when he saw his own eyes I said, "Please, please understand I'm in love with another man And what he couldn't give me Ohhhh, was the one little thing that you can" All I wanna do is make love to you One night of love was all we knew All I wanna do is make love to you Come on, say you will, you want me to All I wanna do is make love to you One night of love was all we knew All I wanna do is make love to you Say you will, you want me to All night long..." Sigh.... Reply #415. Aug 27 19, 11:02 PM |

I did see your Headbangers Ball thread! I'm waiting for time to watch all of all you've posted. I'm trying to play all I can for our team, but I'm kind of burning out, so I'm heading in to listen to all of it soon! I really, really want to post the YouTube video of Led Zeppelin singing "The Ocean" live at Madison Square Garden in 1973, since it's phenomenal, but the comments are pretty rank, so there's no way I'll chance it. But have you seen it??? I watch it at least three times a day. I'd give almost anything to see those guys live. If Ann Wilson is a goddess, and she is, Robert Plant AND Jimmy Page are both gods. How Ann Wilson is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me. I don’t really care about the HOF, but it’s the principle of it, you know? Sadwings, you’re so goofy! You’ve had quite a history playing the guitar and drums… and my reaction to “All I Wanna Do” being about you… “Oh, my!” Thank you for inspiring Ann to write that because I truly enjoy that song! :) Reply #417. "I Can't Tell You Why" by The Eagles This video of them singing this live I am posting below these lyrics is also just gorgeous. I love Timothy B. Schmit's voice so much. Vince Gilley does a really beautiful cover of this, too. "Look at us, baby, up all night Tearing our love apart Aren't we the same two people who lived Through years in the dark? Every time I try to walk away Something makes me turn around and stay And I can't tell you why When we get crazy It just ain't to right Girl, I get lonely too You don't have to worry Just hold on tight 'Cause I love you Nothing's wrong as far as I can see We make it harder than it has to be And I can't tell you why No, baby, I can't tell you why I can't tell you why Every time I try to walk away Something makes me turn around and stay And I can't tell you why No, no, baby, I can't tell you why I can't tell you why I can't tell you why" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O43ymqIy4TU That's not the video I was looking for! This one is from 1995. I just saw them in concert where you couldn't see their breath when they sang, and Don Henley and Joe Walsh were with them. And now I can't remember where they were, but I have that concert recorded. Tim was wearing a long, white shirt outside his jeans, and he is one beautiful man, with a voice of an angel. I'm pretty sure this video is from their "Hell Freezes Over" tour, and this one isn't, And now that I think about it, I think it was their "Farewell Tour" from 2005. They still sounded so great. Jen, what did you think about that drum solo guy, wasn't that insane? Especially when the whole set rotated and all that. That cat is pretty amazing.
