Will you share some of your favorite lyrics with Funtrivia? They can be profound to you, make you smile, etc. I'll list some of mine too.

Ha! It's really funny that you noticed a lot of the cheerleaders smiling towards the end of Ted's full bluntal Nugity performance, Elle. I noticed the very same thing myself. Can't imagine why I was even looking in that direction to begin with. Just one of life's many mysteries, I guess. :-p

I'm a bit shocked about your boyfriend getting into trouble about playing those songs. You mentioned he had a radio show - was it just supposed to be strictly a talk show or something? I don't get it. Sounds like something that would happen right here in the heart of the Bible Belt. What would have happened if he would have had the audacity to go and play a terrifyingly satanic Priest tune, would they have nailed the guy to a cross or something? Jeez! Yeah, I'm not surprised one bit about the school almost erupting into anarchy over that one. Good God, man. I can think of a few songs that would have rightfully caused an outrage in any school, like Now it's Dark by Anthrax or Go 'N Breakdown by Suicidal Tendencies (check out the lyrics to both of those bad boys sometime), but for the songs that he played? Come on, man, please.

Hmmm...sorry, I never saw The Breakfast Club.

I don't have just 5 cover tunes that I like better than the originals, I was just saying that I like probably 5 out of every hundred that I hear, meaning there are a lot more out there than just 5 for me. To be honest, I can only think of a few right off the top of my head, and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like any of them. There's the Crue cover of Smokin' in the Boy's Room, which you don't like better than the original. Then there are a couple of Priest covers I know you wouldn't like better because they have the name "Judas Priest" attached to them. One is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez, and another is an old Fleetwood Mac tune called The Green Manalishi.

Then we have the song that I give my personal crown to as my personal favorite cover job that I've ever heard in my life, and that would be a cover of a Priest tune called Exciter by a band called Strapping Young Lad. I'm quite certain that you would very much dislike both of them. Considering that it was released in 1978, and considering the tempo and magnitude of this song, it runs rings around any rock song on the face of the earth that had ever been released up to that point in time. My opinion has absolutely nothing to do with that. All you have to do is completely erase any and all prejudices, then just simply listen to it very carefully and compare it with anything that had ever been released up to that time, keeping in mind the part about tempo and magnitude. Bingo. Eureka. There it is before God Almighty. I'm not saying that tempo and magnitude are the most important elements in a rock song or in any song for that matter, I am so not saying that at all, they are simply elements among very many others that are involved in the process of creating music. They are not the most important elements, they are not the best elements, they are just simply elements.

With that being said, I knew from the very first time I heard the album that Exciter is from - Stained Class - I was listening to the future of heavy metal. Not the future of rock and roll, the future of specifically heavy metal. There was no such thing as thrash metal or speed metal or hair metal or Goth metal or all these many other forms of the genre in 1978, none of that even existed back then. Stained Class was the very creation that spawned all of that. It doesn't mean that it was better than everything else or anything else. There is really no such thing as "better" in anything at all because "better" just comes down to personal taste. However, those facts that I mentioned still remain. This was something that didn't just open doors for the metal genre, it splintered them completely off the hinges into a misty vapor cloud. Anyway, the fact that this Lad version of a Priest tune was the cover of a Priest tune in the face of me being such a huge Priest fan has nothing to do with it getting my "personal favorite crown" so to speak. If that were the case, then my favorite would be one of the covers that Priest made, not a cover of a Priest tune that some other band made. Personally, I would just love to find any other person on the face of the earth who honestly feels like their favorite cover song they've ever heard - one that they honestly like better than the original - came from a band doing a cover of a song that was originally made by their favorite band of all time. I'd be willing to bet it never happens as long as I live.

Anyway, then there is the Metallica cover of Turn the Page by Bob Seger, and I already know which one of those you like better, you don't even have to tell me. I had an experience with this song that is such a prime example of the average music fan out there, even the most avid of fans. My favorite radio station here - a Classic Rock station - had this fun thing they did where they would play a certain song, a recently released song, and then have the listeners phone in and vote on it to help the station people decide whether or not they would keep playing it. Well, this one lady phoned in and gave it a thumbs down simply because "it wasn't Bob Seger." Seriously, lady? That's your reason? Think maybe she might have liked Seger a lot more than Metallica? Hmmm....what a mind-boggling mystery trying to figure that one out. So in other words, what that lady was clearly saying was that it didn't matter what band on earth did their version of that song, it just simply wouldn't be good enough to cut the mustard "simply because" it wasn't the original artist. Every band on earth automatically gets shot down and swept up off the floor before they ever even get up to the starting gate - "just because." Nothing like keeping an open mind and knowing just exactly what it means to be objective.

Anyway, I'm sure this has got to be about 748 octillion miles long by now, maybe even closer to 749 octillion miles. So let me just leave you for now with a very special song. A very special love song. You seem to like Nazareth a lot and I have one of their songs here, Elle. Not only do they get my vote for the best example of a tune where the singer sings "rock and roll" in the coolest way, but it also looks like they get my vote for the most tender-hearted, tear-jerking love ballad ever recorded, and no, I'm not talking about Love Hurts from the only one of Nazareth's 16 albums that anyone is ever familiar with. This is such a special love song, so tender and romantic and just bristling with all the happiness and joy of a newfound love. I get misty-eyed every time I hear it, Elle. So full of hope and joy and what true love is really all about. I may be wrong but I bet it's one you've never heard before...

You want me to be your friend
Hold your hand right to the end
What's in it for me?
What's in it for me?!

I'm about to start crying just from writing those few lines! :-p Seriously though, this may not have the rosiest lyrics of any "romantic luv ballad" ever made, but it really is a great tune and Manny's guitar work in this thing just punches everything that gets near it square in the nose. Anyway, all you lovers of great rock and roll out there check this one out...

Nope. That movie was banned from being shown anywhere in Oklahoma because they said it was anti-Christian. Just kidding! Hee hee! Seriously, I really never saw it. Must have been a pretty good one, ay? I'm gonna go watch the trailer to it right now.....

Yeah, I remember seeing those previews before. I really got a kick out of Paul Gleason's character in Die Hard, that jerk cop who was "in charge" down on the street until the FBI took over. Ha! Man, he really did a great job of playing a jerk.

McClain?! You've got some things to answer for, mister!"

Ahyuk! What a dweeb! I mean that character, of course, not the guy who played him. I'm sure the real guy is a fine man. What kind of part did he have in The Breakfast Club, was he a jerk in that one as well?

Don't You (Forget About Me) ~ Simple Minds

"Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh woh
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don't you, forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you, forget about me
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh woh
Don't you try and pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security
Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby
Don't you, forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you, forget about me
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on, call my name
Will you call my name?
I say
(Lala la la lala la la)
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by......"

Don't forget to raise one defiant fist in the air!

That is one incredibly cool song right there, Jo. No joking around. Generally speaking, metal maniacs don't really like nerdy stuff but that tune is one of those brilliantly outstanding exceptions with me. I've really got to see how well that thing did on the charts when I can get around to it, you know, just out of curiousity. Honestly, I see no reason why it couldn't be considered a masterpiece. I feel the same way about Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran. It could tarnish my reputation for life if it ever got out that I liked a Duran Duran song, but I like to live dangerously.

Speaking of that, here is my shockingly out of control, Sad Wings of By God Heavy Metal Destiny version of the chorus to Elvira by the Oak Ridge Boys....

Hell, fire it up
Hell, fire it up
My hearts on fire
So hell, fire it up

Giddy up a-oom boppa oom boppa MAUI WOWIE
Giddy up a-oom boppa oom boppa MAUI WOWIE!

Ha! WOO-HOO! Party Central Maui Wowie style, mains! :-)

What's wrong with Duran Duran? I love Duran Duran! Some of their lyrics were a bit nonsensical, but always beautifully poetic. My favourite songs of theirs are Save A Prayer, Hungry Like The Wolf, and A View To A Kill, which contains these totally awesome lines :

"Earth's crystal tears, the fall of snowflakes on your body
First time in years to drench your skin in lover's rosy stain
A chance to find the phoenix for the flame
A chance to die, but can we
Dance into the fire..."

You've never seen "The Breakfast Club" because you're from the conservative State of Arkansas, and you wonder why we got into trouble for playing Jimi's version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in our high school??? With a little Pink Floyd and God forbid, Alice Cooper tossed in?

Because I'm from a large, conservative family in a small, conservative town in a large, conservative State, and went to a large, conservative high school (seriously and oddly, this high school was huge,) where they had probably never heard anything like that before in their lives. The faculty, not the students. Maybe not the students, either.

I was also the Good Girl with the long, blonde tresses who had just started dating the Bad Boy with the long, black tresses longer than mine, already causing quite a stir, and he listened to that wild, long-haired crazy rock music (so did I, but I kept that very hush-hush,) so when he blasted Jimi, all hell broke loose.

"PB & J with the crusts cut off... Well, Brian, this is a very nutritious lunch; all the food groups are represented. Did your mom marry Mr. Rogers?"

"Oh...obscene finger gestures from such a pristine girl!"

"I don't have it. Screws fall out all of the time, the world's an imperfect place."

"That's very clever sir, but what if there's a fire? I think violating fire codes and endangering the lives of children would be unwise at this juncture in your career, sir."

Vernon: "What if your home, what if your family -- what if your dope was on fire???"

Bender: "Impossible, sir; it's in Brian's underwear."

"Yeah. I got a question. Does Barry Manilow know you raid his wardrobe?"

Bender: "Uh, Dick? Excuse me, Rich? Will milk be made available to us?"
Andrew: "We're extremely thirsty, sir."
Claire: "I have a really low tolerance for dehydration."
Andrew: "I've seen her dehydrate sir. It's pretty gross."

Some of my best lines come from "The Breakfast Club." You should stop what you're doing, right now, and find this movie, maybe in YouTube, and watch it, STAT!

Hahaha, oh my god, classic! Bender is soooooo cool, he got all the best lines. And Ally Sheedy had some of the funniest scenes, too, without saying a word. Like when she's making her Cap'n Crunch and Pixie Stix sandwich, or making it snow on her picture. Then eventually, when you find out why she's in detention.....I can't say I was ever the Princess or the Jock in high school, but I was definitely the Weirdo, the Geek, and the Rebel.

Oh, get out of here. It just deleted my entire post because I copied the words "shtu up!" Apparently, you can say this in other threads, on this site, but not this one?

Let me try to rewrite it. SO frustrating.

Bender is my favorite Bad Boy, EVER.

Bender: "I like those earrings, Claire."
Claire: "Shtu up."
Bender: "Are those real diamonds, Claire?"
Claire: "Shtu up!"

Bender: "Remember how you said your parents use you to get back at each other?"
Claire: (nods)
Bender: "Wouldn't I be OUTSTANDING in that capacity?"

And then, at the end of the day, she puts one of her diamond earrings into one of his black leather gloved hands, and closes it, and he kisses her, and then he walks away, and that's when the fist pump happens. Heart-melting!

But before we have a mush total mush fest ("You're totalled, man." "Totally?") here is one more quote between Andrew the Jock and Brian the Brain:

Andrew: "Why do you need a fake I.D.?"
Brian: "To vote."

"Will you call my name?
As you walk on by?
Will you call my name?
When you walk away?"

I was just testing something out. Very shortly after I became a member I had attempted to make a post on one of my team threads, but it wouldn't let me do it because it had the word "stupid" in it. I was even referring to myself for something dumb I did. I guess they must have okayed that word somewhere along the line because I've seen other people use it here and there since then.

There is nothing wrong at all with Duran Duran, Jo. They are okay by me. They are just one of those nerd bands that nerds are attracted to for whatever reason. I didn't make the rules on that one for sure. Don't get me wrong, nerds are people with the same rights as everyone else, and to be totally honest, I think they are a lot better for society to have around than a lot of other people.

Have you guys ever noticed just how many live concert performances from tons and tons of different people that are available on the net? Entire concerts for free just everywhere. A lot of stuff I never even knew existed. I'm discovering more and more of it all the time.

Oh my gosh, here's a massive post with me catching up, I'm sorry.

Sadwings, I commend your open mind! I love that. I too always try to keep an open mind, especially about music. If you don’t let something new into your life, think about what you could be missing! Without knowing, your new favorite song of all time could be out there. One never knows!

Very nice story about Nazareth and their cover of This Flight Tonight. It was pretty crazy how that song—and Joni Mitchell—kept popping up in their lives. And I gave that some good thought , how they said they wanted to sound as different as possible from the original. I like that. It sounds like she was a good sport about Nazareth doing her song!
On one hand, a band might want to stay as true to the original as possible, to honor it, and share love of the song. On the other hand, maybe they want to add their own flair to it. I can see it both ways!
I know I’ve said this a lot, but I love how everyone’s different. Some people may love a certain cover while others much prefer the original, like sadwings said.
I personally prefer NIN’s original “Hurt” over Johnny Cash.

This may be blasphemy but here are some covers I enjoy:
The Rasmus “Ghostbusters” (originally by Ray Parker Jr.)
I love the horns they incorporate, and especially love the energy they bring to the song. It’s funny because The Rasmus is generally considered “dark” but this is one of their earlier songs and it’s just a lot of fun!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b9JaYXAyyM

Seal “Stand By Me” (originally by Ben E. King)
Please let me state: this song was one of my favorite songs of all time when I was growing up! I don’t know (I really don’t know!) if I like Seal’s version better, but this version inspired me and is a part of one of my story’s soundtracks. It’s pretty similar to the original, but the horns he added to the chorus! Ooh, I adore them! They get louder later on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVRaaCObo0M

Gary Jules “Mad World” (originally by Tears For Fears)
This one’s quite different from the original. I love how moody it is, how simple they made it. My friend ended up using this twice for his own stories… one of the remake, and then one using the instrumental version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Az2BvTcshg

Oh, sadwings, I wholly recommend watching The Breakfast Club! If I had it my way, I’d make every student watch it. Sure, it’s littered with R-rated content, but that’s realistic. I love Ally Sheedy dancing on her knees and then, eventually, on her stomach. That movie’s in my Top 10 movies of all time! And of course, “Don’t You Forget About Me” is so great! (sorry, I forgot to add the parenthesis there) Don’t worry, you can admit to liking a Duran Duran song… you’re among friends! :) I was definitely the Weirdo in high school.
Your classic rock radio station made me think of one of my own favorites (which, sadly, does not exist anymore). Every now and then you could go online and vote on recently released songs. I loved doing that! Not many radio stations want your opinion like that, and I’m glad yours did that! That’s really too bad that woman gave “Turn the Page” a thumbs down automatically. She could have done with a more open mind.

Elle, your boyfriend playing that music reminded me of The Shawshank Redemption:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzuM2XTnpSA

(I would totally do that too, except with some of my favorite music… ahhh…)

Here are some I thought of overnight:

“Such Great Heights” by Iron and Wine, originally by The Postal Service
Much slower and sleepier than the original. I very much enjoy the original, but this one, to me, is oddly reassuring. Comforting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIq_KLMvIY8

Another Seal song! Covering one of my favorite Steve Miller Band songs of all time, “Fly Like An Eagle”
I think Seal’s voice is beautiful. I simply adore the original, but there’s magic in this one. His backing vocals add so much charm. I think he stayed true to the original, but added his own spices!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVvUbBHd7Zg

Disturbed “The Sound of Silence” originally by Simon & Garfunkel
I think we’ve touched on this one here and there. This is a cover of arguably one of the best songs ever. When I first heard it, I was wary. But it won me over, it’s beautiful! Disturbed proved they were not a one-dimensional band. Even my mom, a massive fan of the original, said she thought it was great!

Sadwings, I thought that remake was pretty faithful to the original. Which one did you hear first? Have you ever liked a song and not realized it was a cover?
