"So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure, how amazingly unlikely is your birth. And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space, coz there's bugger all down here on Earth."
Eric Idle, 'The Galaxy Song', from 'Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life.'

"River" by Joni Mitchell is such a great song, sectant. She has a lot of my favorite lyrics.

"This Flight Tonight" -- Joni Mitchell

"I'm drinking sweet champagne
Got the headphones up high
Can't numb you out,
Can't drum you out of my mind"

Most of my favorite song lyrics are going to be sad. Not all of them, but most of them.

"It's been awhile since I talked to you
Nothing wrong
Just nothing ever goes as planned
Many times I thought I'd call
I didn't have your number in my hand

I know it's true
You'd never do
The same thing to me

I never meant to make you cry
And though I know I shouldn't call
It just reminds us of the cost
Of everything we've lost
Bad timing, that's all"

"Bad Timing" by Blue Rodeo, partial lyrics.

This entire song is just so, so sad. And he's right, I'd never do the same thing to him.

Blackdresss, I know what you mean. I have this list of lyrics I love and am surprised with how many seem sad. It's strange. But maybe they're naturally more profound?

Maybe, Skyflyer. I love these lyrics, too. I love this entire song, and there is a live version on YouTube where the entire crowd of thousands and thousands goes completely insane, jumping up and down and singing along, when they begin to sing it. I think it's a sad song, while also being a very uplifting song, but when he sings it, even when he's smiling and dancing, he still breaks my heart. When you're "confessing" and asking someone to "consider this the hint of the century" and you know you "slipped" and it's a "fail," it's just heartbreaking.

R.E.M. -- "Losing My Religion"

"Consider this
Consider this, the hint of the century
Consider this, the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed

What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try"

Okay, since we're doing the sad stuff, here's mega sad as can only be sung by mega sad Sinatra on mega sad Only The Lonely album. It's the last lines of Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry.

"Somebody said just forget about her
So I gave that treatment a try
Strangely enough I got along without her
Then one day she passed me right by
Oh wellllllll, guess I'll hang my tears out to dry."

You really need to listen to this to appreciate the heartbreak.

"Song To The Siren" by Tim Buckley

"I am puzzled as the oyster
I am troubled as the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or should I lie with death my bride?
Hear me sing, 'Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you.
Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you'"

I think this one has to be seen and heard:

(If you don't want videos posted in your thread, let me know and I won't. But this is one I watch and listen to every day, at some point.)

Oh no, Blackdresss, please share any and all videos you may have!

"Losing My Religion" is a great example. Love that one. When I was younger and heard it I thought he was singing about seeing a woman he loved getting hurt (and it was making him question God, a la "losing his religion").

This one is called "Honestly OK" by Dido.
It's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. I think a lot of people, at some point in their lives, can relate.

Oh, that's a great one, Jen. Thanks for posting it.

Okay, if videos are okay, back to "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. and this live video, that makes me both happy and sad. I don't think this was meant to be a happy song, but then it turned into one for a lot of people. But you can hear the pain in these lyrics. I hear both.

I love how excited that crowd is. That much energy in one place is just electrifying. And I love how happy everyone is, especially Michael Stipe, when he sings:

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

That was really cool! From the very second the first strums of that familiar guitar sound, the audience 1. knew what song it was and 2. went nuts! I think artists feed off of that electric energy, and who could blame them? It was nice to see him smile so much, too. Despite the gravity and feeling of the song he was singing!

"I know that starting over's not what life's about, but my thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth."- 'The World at Large' by Modest Mouse

"Smile for me if you can, I want to have that in my head." - 'Departure' by Baths. On the same note: "I love you enough to drive like an hour from wherever I am to be with you." - 'You're My Excuse to Travel' by Baths

"There's a party in my head and no-one is invited." - 'Solitude is Bliss' - Tame Impala

"When you punish a person, for dreaming their dreams, don't expect them to thank or forgive you." - 'The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton' by The Mountain Goats (John Darnielle is a lyrical genius.) Again, by The Mountain Goats: "The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you, and that you're standing in the doorway."

"To the sky up above: is that all you've got?" - 'Take It' by Jay Som

And this entire verse from 'White Ferrari' by Frank Ocean:
"I'm sure we're taller in another dimension
You say we're small and not worth the mention
You’re tired of moving, your body's aching
We could vacay, there's places to go
Clearly this isn't all that there is
Can't take what's been given
But we're so okay here, we're doing fine
Primal and naked
You dream of walls that hold us imprisoned
It's just a skull, least that's what they call it
And we're free to roam."

I'll probably think of more later.

I love that video so much, Jen. That crowd just goes nuts, and he tells them "This next song is yours. We're happy to play it for you." You just know it started out as his song, but then it spread to everyone who heard it and loved it. And obviously could relate to it. And I do love that he smiles when he's singing, in at least part of it, and when he dances, he does look happy. I like watching my music as well as listening to it.

I do think that's a sad song about a relationship where he divulged too much, and it didn't go well, and was a fail. I love everything about that song.

Daniel, your lyrics are great, too. I'd love to hear more.

I also read that when Tim Buckley first sang "Song To The Siren," someone laughed at his line, "I am puzzled as the oyster" so he changed it and wouldn't sing it that way again. I don't know what's funny about an oyster being puzzled. You get a little grain of sand in you, and it turns into a pearl. I'd be puzzled, too.

And as gorgeous as that song is, it's not a love song. It's about a sailor being lured to his death by a siren.

Tim, and Jeff Buckley, wrote such gorgeous songs and lyrics, although Jeff didn't think he was good at lyrics, or so he said. They were both so shy, too, unless they were singing. And even then, Tim didn't make eye contact. His eyes were generally closed.

I'll have to think of another one.

If you take these lyrics from Elton John's "Harmony"...

"Harmony and me
We're pretty good company
Looking for an island
In our boat upon the sea

Harmony, gee I really love you
And I want to love you forever
And dream of the never, never, never leaving harmony"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja2IRqEBuNs

And you kind of mash them with the lyrics from The Beatles "Golden Slumbers"...

"Once there was a way
To get back homeward
Once there was a way
To get back home

Sleep, pretty darling
Dot not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

Golden slumbers
Fill your eyes
Smiles await you when you rise

Sleep pretty darling
Do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

Once there was a way
To get back homeward
Once there was a way
To get back home

Sleep, pretty darling
Do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxjK0BW8k6Q

... you end up with a beautiful lullaby to sing babies, kittens, and puppies to sleep.

Re the Track Listings thread. I've already worked out that you'll be the one to post Harmony as the final track. Unless somebody kibbitzes. I love those old Yiddish/Jewish words.

Few more I've thought of-

"Tied to my bed/I was younger then/I had nothing to spend/but time on you." - Sharon Van Etten, 'Love More'
"I'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl." - Elliott Smith, 'Say Yes'
"Nobody broke your heart, you broke your own 'cause you can't finish what you start." - Elliott Smith, 'Alameda'
"It's too late to articulate it
That empty feeling
You share the same fate as the people you hate
You build yourself up against others' feelings
And it left you feeling empty as a car coasting downhill
I have become such a negative person
It was all just an act
It was all so easily stripped away.
But if we learn how to live like this
Maybe we can learn how to start again
Like a child who's never done wrong
Who hasn't taken that first step." - Car Seat Headrest, 'Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales'
Plus the entirety of "This Must Be the Place" and "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads.

"We're a happy family, we're a happy family, we're a happy family, me mom and daddy. Sitting here in Queens, eating refried beans, we're in all the magazines, gulping down Thorazines. We ain't got no friends, our troubles never end, no Christmas cards to send...daddy likes men."

We're A Happy Family by The Ramones. From the album Rocket To Russia.
(Essential listening.)
