Subject: Headbanger's Ball Revisited

Posted by: sadwings
Date: Aug 27 19

Anybody remember Headbanger's Ball on MTV in the 80s and 90s? This is the place to be if you like that kind of noisy stuff. Thought I'd throw a bunch of boss-rocking videos from that era, and I'm sure many from outside that era, and please do feel free to contribute. If it isn't exactly classified as metal or if you aren't really sure, don't worry about it. As long as it rocks a little bit on the harder side. Anything with bands performing on stage or anywhere else along with out of control fans stage diving and crowd surfing is great, but this is certainly not intended to be limited to that. Just grab a fistful of metal and see if you can punch my lights out with it. :-)

Lyrics are just another type of poetry, and I started writing poems when I was like, 4. It actually takes me longer to type than it does to come up with the words. I don't write so much anymore, but these are fun! I've got my Disturbed on, channeling Draiman lol

Well, this is rather irritating. I was gonna slam down Dr. Feelgood by Motley Crue, but the only ones I can find now are the ones with the naughty comments beneath the video that you can't post or you will get a spanking. The video I had on my favorites list didn't have all that crap underneath it, but now I'm getting this "video no longer available" message on that one. Anyway, you should dial that one up sometime and check it out if you've never seen it, Jo. Really boss-rocking car in it, one that was "traded for some powdered goods" as the song says. I wonder what that means, like talcum powder maybe, or maybe some of those yummy powdered donuts or something? :-p

In the meantime, let's explore the darker side of heavy metal for a moment, boys and girls, shall we? :-) Jo, I feel like I have gotten to know you pretty well, and I'm thinking that you might even find this next song as fascinating as I do. This thing touches on what is probably the most horrible evil known to mankind - hate. Part of the song describes the very origin and the very essence of hate itself. Not exactly the rosiest subject in the world, just a piece of cold, hard reality that can't exactly be swept under the carpet and ignored. I'm not a hate monger and I know you aren't either, but that is totally beside the point. As I say, this is just a fascinating piece of work.

The video itself is also quite awesome. It has some absolutely incredible artwork all the way through it. Fantasy art is what I believe this stuff would be called. That's all this video is, just all artwork. The song starts out pretty easy and mellow, but believe it or not, yeah, you are gonna get slammed by a runaway freight train on steroids. I know you can handle it, Jo, but I'm not so sure about anyone else around here. :-p

And now, boys and girls, I present to you the most talked about love song of the year - Silent Screams.

Since time began I made a vow
To drag you underground
To steal your soul of purity
And watch you waste away

I am pure, I am right
I'm the god that makes you fight
Yeah - hate
I am life, I am death
I will steal your final breath
Yeah - hate...

Jo's got her Disturbed on! :-) I've gotta get me some sleep but I'm gonna try to get my Priest on, but don't get your hopes up. :-p I've written a few poems and destroyed even more great songs with my own warped versions, but I don't know, it's like all the stars have to be lined up just right and I can't have anything else on my mind or anything else going on at all for me to even begin to come up with stuff. Cranking it out like a hurricane like you do just isn't happening. Wish I could be like that though, that would be pretty cool and fun!

What did you think about that explosively satanic Halford tune, Jo? :-)

Talk about hellfire unleashed with no place to run. Just imagine if Disturbed ever came out with anything that rocked this hard, Jo....

You know, gang, if any of you out there might feel that I would have a really hard time swallowing my pride, well, you might want to think again. I'm about to swallow a big mouthful of it right here and now. It's no big secret what a diehard Judas Priest fan I am, but I will be the first to admit that the guys in the following video are the guys who taught Priest everything they know about rock and roll. Not only do I not have a problem acknowledging that, I am also welcoming them to my boss-rocking music thread with open arms. Try to run away from the truth and it will just bite you on the butt, folks.

Hey, Kev, guess what? Just heard, Rob Halford is bringing out a Christmas album next month, the title is 'Celestial' and the first track to be released will be called 'Donner and Blitzen'. And no, I'm actually not kidding!

Wow, that was pretty cool. He released another Christmas CD about 10 years ago.

Hey, what did you think about that video I posted on reply #102? That has really awesome artwork all the way through it. Check out the dark lyrics ,too. Spooky and creepy! :-(

I've just been playing around with the lightweight stuff so far, you guys. This next stuff is the real deal. You probably think I'm joking but I'm not. These guys make Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and Pantera - all of them on steroids at the same time at Madison Square Garden - look just like a hospital nursery full of sleeping infants. Not only that, but Neil Peart from Rush designed his drum set from the one that the drummer is playing on in this incredible video. If you think I'm joking about that, just Google "Neil Peart drum solos" and a number of them will pop up. Just take a few seconds and check out his drum set, then compare it to the one in this next video and you will see that they look almost identical.

Hi Kev, I see Rob Halford is releasing a new album called Celestial which out here in the U.K. 18th October. It's not a Judas Priest album but collaboration with family and friends. It sounds quite interesting. You probably knew about this but thought I would do a heads up anyway.

Sorry Jo, I was so eager to write about this that I never read the earlier posts, but now see you had already written about the new Rob Halford album.
Smacked wrists for me then.

No, you are perfectly fine, rubytops. Thanks for thinking about me and giving me a heads up on that. Actually I didn't know anything about it until Jo mentioned it.

Okay, maybe these animals are just a little bit out of control with their rock and roll, but the words to a lot of their songs actually have quite a noteworthy message to them. Their music will kick you square in the butt hard enough to lift you right off the floor, but what do you know, sometimes so will reality.

Close your eyes to the horror
Close your eyes to the pain
When you live in a box
No one knows your name

Living in the street
Moms and kids with nothing to eat
Welfare hotels
Who says there's no place called hell...

Keep in mind that good old-fashioned, down to earth bluesy rock and roll is certainly not off-limits here by any means. Here's my favorite tune from that groovy, swinging Steve Miller guy and he's doing it live from Boss-Rock town.
