Subject: Headbanger's Ball Revisited

Posted by: sadwings
Date: Aug 27 19

Anybody remember Headbanger's Ball on MTV in the 80s and 90s? This is the place to be if you like that kind of noisy stuff. Thought I'd throw a bunch of boss-rocking videos from that era, and I'm sure many from outside that era, and please do feel free to contribute. If it isn't exactly classified as metal or if you aren't really sure, don't worry about it. As long as it rocks a little bit on the harder side. Anything with bands performing on stage or anywhere else along with out of control fans stage diving and crowd surfing is great, but this is certainly not intended to be limited to that. Just grab a fistful of metal and see if you can punch my lights out with it. :-)

Wow, Jo, I honestly don't remember the ice hockey video from Steve N Seagulls that you are talking about. What is the name of the song?

Elle, you might want to take a peek at the name of that Bulletboys tune. The name of it is actually "Smooth Up In Ya", and nope, that's not a misprint. It really does sound like he's saying "smooth opinion" but I promise you that isn't what he's saying.

By the way, Elle, did you catch those two vids from the out of control Finnish bluegrass guys - Steve N Seagulls? It's reply #28 and #29 on page 2 for those of you maniacs out there who might have missed that. They do a really wild and crazy Finnish bluegrass version of a smoking Iron Maiden song and a red hot AC/DC number. Definitely well worth checking out.

In the meantime, I have a special treat for all you special boys and girls who know where it's at. Umber had mentioned a few replies back that her favorite band has done some amazing cover songs, and this is one of them...

Thanks for posting that last one, Jo, now I remember that. That was pretty funny when that one guy kind of shoved that girl and then ran off. Those crazy cats are pretty amazing! I guess they could probably do pretty much any song out there if they wanted to.

Wow, Kev! I can't believe you posted a Disturbed video before I did!
The cover that displays David Draiman's vocal talents the best has got to be "The Sound of Silence", which is totally and completely awesome, but I also love this one, because it has lots of his lovely trademark growly noises :

I loved the one you posted, Kev, by the way. I can't tell you how much I love watching Dave Draiman doing his crazy psycho dance moves, something about the way he stomps around flailing his arms just mesmerises me!

Disturbed do mainly original stuff, despite what might seem like a LOT of covers. Here's a good one - this is for you, Elle. Stricken :

My all time favourite track from Disturbed is called "Inside The Fire" but I can't post a link because the video will scare people.

Powerful, aggressive rock and roll, man! :-) Those first two were pretty awesome, Jo. I noticed that Phil Collins cover when I looked up their cover tunes and picked out that Metallica number, and I was thinking I had seen it before on the same day that I saw the Sound of Silence cover, but I evidently didn't. That is such a great song that really has a lot of powerful stuff in the lyrics, and that video was really awesome, not to mention the awesome job the band did on covering that.

As for that second one you posted - I've already forgotten the name of it - that one got clicked over to my favorites list before it was even finished playing. When it was finished, another Disturbed tune started up that immediately got my attention and that one wound up on my favorites list as well. I don't know how I missed these songs a while back when I was checking out their stuff. Anyway, that made the 3rd Disturbed tune on my favorites list, and it's going to wind up being 5 of them because I need to get the Collins cover and the Metallica cover on there as well.

As for that last one you played, that definitely rocked, but I guess I'm just really picky about throwing stuff on my favorites list. Not something I do casually. I don't know, Jo, maybe that thing will grow on me enough to make my "elite, almighty, boss-rocking" list. :-p Things like that have happened many, many times with me. You know, songs that you thought were just kind of okay the first time you heard them, but then over time as you listen to them again, they just kind of somehow grow on you and you like them more and more.

Wasn't Stricken the name of that one you posted? Well, the one I mentioned that started playing after that is the one I'm about to play next. Pretty spooky and frightening and "Disturbing", this one. :-p After I make this post I've got to go check out that other one that you said would scare people. If you think that one is scarier than the one I'm about to post, I've got to go see that for myself! This next one kind of sort of reminded me of a creepy King Diamond video that I'll have to post pretty soon.

Make that 6 Disturbed vids on my list now. Man, that would be so horrible to have that kind of experience. I can't even imagine. I don't know for sure, of course, but I think maybe you might have made the right decision by not posting that, Jo. You know, with kids being part of the FT family and all that. I can see where that might be pretty shocking for some people to see. It was pretty cool of Dave to take the time to warn his fans at the beginning of the video and offering that contact info. He seems like a really cool and level-headed and intelligent person.

You know, boys and girls, just exactly what kind of brutal, non-stop rock and roll beatdown does Headbanger's Ball Revisited provide for you? I believe I will allow the great Chris Farley (the second guy from the right) describe that quite accurately for you....

Dave Draiman had that horrible experience, that's why he wrote the song. When he was still just a teenager that happened with his girlfriend, Devon. Now have and the band are involved in a lot of campaigning to help other people in that same situation, or preferably before it gets that far.

I'm so glad these are getting on your favourites list! That last one, 'The Animal,' that's another of my favourites, too! Love the lyrics, love the sound, love the video! Great choice!

I wonder how much Dave Draiman benches?

Ha! Man, that How Much Ya Bench skit really busts me up pretty good, especially Chris Farley's part. "Wham! Bam! Bam! Bam! Down you go! Bam! Bam! Whack! Whack! When's it ever gonna stop? Survey says......NOT VERY SOON!!" That one is on my fave video list, too, along with a few other SNL skits.

Anyway, here's that creepy King Diamond video I was talking about. This cat can hit those high notes pretty much like Halford. You kids out there just keep in mind that the stuff in this video is just make-believe, it's not real. The only part about it that's real is the savage, brutal heavy metal beatdown! :-)

Hee hee! You think one of those silly clowns looks like Pee Wee, ay? Ahaw hawww! Hmmm...I'm trying to figure out which one of them. I think that video is so funny to watch. The way they throw their arms out like they are so cool and tough, and then there's all that crowd surfing going on as they are all walking across the bridge. Pretty hefty punch-in-the-mouth groove going on as well, but I can't say that I like it well enough to buy that stuff. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would buy music these days when you can listen to anything you want on the internet for free. I still don't understand the ins and outs on all of that to this day. I don't understand how professional musicians can make any money like that.

Anyway, I suppose that last tune could be classified as metal/rap, but this next one for me is like the king of all the metal/rap tunes I have ever heard.....

Oh, you were talking about that King Diamond video, weren't you, Jo? Ha! Yeah, poor Pee Wee! :-( Sometimes I wonder where they get some of these people to be in some of these crazy videos that get made. Like that kid in the King Diamond video and like that little midget guy in the Disturbed video.

Okay, apparently I can still post. That's a relief. And I can still play, and still communicate with my team. Also a relief!

You guys are so far ahead of me now, I'll never get caught up! And I crashed into sleep for endless hours and missed most of yesterday completely. Oops. And I really need food, and the lag in here is terrible right now, and I've shut down and rebooted three times.

But I did watch a Disturbed video! I had been wondering about them since Jo loves them, so I went to Youtube and watched the first one that came up in my feed that was live, and it was Disturbed on Conan, performing "The Sound Of Silence" backed by an orchestra.

Wow, it was so good. I started crying, it was so good! And that video also has over 97 million views and almost 42,000 comments -- I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Based on the first comment in that video, I am in for quite a shock when I go check out any other video, though.

I'll pop back in here on and off today, but I really need to play some trivia!

Hurricane update today has it moving away from the Florida coast. It's now heading for Ga and The Carolina's. We aren't out of the woods yet, but the picture is getting clearer!!

That's good news for you, Mike, and a welcome relief! But it's bad news for everyone in Georgia and The Carolinas, to include some of our teammates... oh no.
