Subject: Headbanger's Ball Revisited

Posted by: sadwings
Date: Aug 27 19

Anybody remember Headbanger's Ball on MTV in the 80s and 90s? This is the place to be if you like that kind of noisy stuff. Thought I'd throw a bunch of boss-rocking videos from that era, and I'm sure many from outside that era, and please do feel free to contribute. If it isn't exactly classified as metal or if you aren't really sure, don't worry about it. As long as it rocks a little bit on the harder side. Anything with bands performing on stage or anywhere else along with out of control fans stage diving and crowd surfing is great, but this is certainly not intended to be limited to that. Just grab a fistful of metal and see if you can punch my lights out with it. :-)

Well now...

So the third one, the Rush video? "The City Eye"? You know I don't like Rush, right? That is a visually gorgeous video -- loved the construction guys on the bridge, loved the ferry all lit up, loved the policemen, loved the subway, loved the Christmas tree, loved Broadway, loved the parade, loved the guy with the bagpipes, loved all of it, but I started crying 4 minutes in, and it's 11 minutes long. I am still so freaked out about what happened to that city. I suppose everyone is, and I may just be really tired, but that one wrecked me.

And... I loved the song, too.

What are you doing to me??

Sometimes our minds get cluttered with things that we don't even know are there, Elle. Things that prevent us from seeing things the way they really are, prevent us from seeing all the details that whatever we are focusing on is composed of. It happens to every single one of us. When we clear our minds of these things, it just opens so many doors that we've never been through before. It opens up a whole new world for us. I think that is what has taken place with you, you have somehow been able to clear a lot of things out of your mind. I am just speculating, but I'm thinking that your time away from here may be a big factor in that, I don't know. The human mind is a very mysterious thing.

Anyway, Headbanger's Ball was just a program on MTV back in the 80s and 90s. It was all just heavy metal videos. I believe it was close to the mid 90s when the show was replaced by a show called Yo, MTV Raps. I've never really paid much attention at all to MTV ever since.

That Helmet tune was one that they played on a fairly regular basis. I really like that song a lot and it is honestly the only song from them that I have ever heard - I think. Somewhere in the back of my mind I think it's possible that I may have checked out the CD that song is from like many years ago and I just didn't really care all that much for any of the other songs, but I just really can't remember. I have experienced that very thing a lot of times in my life. You know, you hear a song that you really dig a lot, then you listen to the album that it's from and it turns out that you really don't much like any of the other songs, just that one song. Isn't that weird? I'm going to have to listen to more of their stuff whenever I can get around to it.

Yes, The Camera Eye from Rush truly is quite an incredible piece of work. It may possibly be my favorite tune that they ever did, but I'm not sure. That would not be an easy choice to make for me. You'll definitely never hear any other song like it, that is certain. That's one of the biggest reasons why I have always been fascinated by their music, they just simply march to the beat of a different drummer. They venture off down roads that are just simply not taken and they don't look back. Something I can very dearly relate to.

Been inclined to wander
Off the beaten track
That's where the thunder
Of the wind shouts back

That's just a verse from an old Priest tune. Yeah, I am definitely shocked that you liked the almighty by God Painkiller. That's one of the hardest raging onslaughts they ever unleashed. They are just about as far from one-dimensional as it gets, and they have got so much stuff you have never heard before.

Gotta rock the house and hit the sack for a bit. Here is another tune I discovered from Headbanger's Ball that they would play here and there, and this one has lyrics that actually have a worthwhile message. It's my favorite from this particular album.

Here's a little something from before MTV even existed. Rock and roll can be so very many different things, and sometimes it can be quite a dark and mysterious force.

Wow, how cool to be paid a visit on this particular thread by a player named "rockstar" of all things. :-) Cool name, man! I'm pretty sure I have seen your name here and there and I always have thought what a cool name it is.

Yeah, songs that have some kind of worthwhile story to tell or make you really stop and think about certain things are always cool. Unfortunately, metal or really just rock music in general is probably not the most ideal place to go for that particular type of thing, you know, as a whole. I'd say probably folk music would be the top dog for that specific aspect of music, but then, that's really what that kind of music is pretty much all about to begin with. I have always enjoyed that kind of stuff and I always will. The thing with metal and me personally is that I get really intense adrenaline rushes from it like I don't get from anything else, but it's only a fairly small percentage of it, when you look at the entire spectrum of what is out there in that particular genre. It's actually quite ironic but I would have to say that there is more of it out there that I dislike than there is that I really like. All of this death metal and Black metal and Goth metal and God knows how many other names for it they have now that I'm not even familiar with, I just really don't care for the vast majority of that stuff, and the thing is, when it comes to what is the most popular stuff in metal music, this is the kind of stuff that evidently has the runaway lead over everything else. I'm speaking strictly metal alone here. There is just tons and tons of that stuff out there like you would not believe.

Here's more irony. The video I'm about to unleash is from a bad that may possibly fall into one of the metal categories I just mentioned, I'm really not totally sure, but I do know that most of the songs I have heard from these guys, which is a pretty significant number, are songs that are just kind of so-so with me and not exactly the kind of stuff that I like to feed on, but they do have a small handful that I really like and this next hellhammer beatdown is one of them. It's one thing for a song to grab you by the throat, that's all fine and dandy, but when it lifts you a good three or four feet off the ground right before it drives you head and shoulders first right through the wall behind you, well, that's a whole different story, and that's where my romance with this stuff begins. The kind of brutal beatdown that plays no games.

With all of that being said, let me just leave you guys with one more thought and a valuable piece of advice: don't try this at home, kids.....

I do love it hard and heavy indeed, but please do give me at least *some* kind of melody, ya know what I mean? That's what I'm talking about. Sure, there is a lot of fun and good times involved with getting slammed by a runaway freight train, but the stuff that I really like the best is the stuff that has the wonderful combination of speed, power and melody going on all at the same time. With the glorious exception of the almighty Priest Beast, nobody really does that quite like Iron Maiden, the guys who are about to take the stage in my next video.

You know how a big bunch of these metal guitarists will make all these faces like they are demonically possessed and stick their tongues out and all of that? No biggie, just all part of the show. Well, check out the guitarist in this next video, the one who starts off the song. He is just ripping this thing to shreds, but he is going about playing his guitar so hum-drum casually that I'm kind of surprised he doesn't actually yawn a couple of times. In fact, in my opinion, if he *did* yawn a couple of times while doing what he does in this song - kablam! - Hall of Fame right then and there. No ifs ands or buts. That's where these guys have belonged for at least the last 20 years anyway. It's not just this song that this guy plays his guitar like that, he is pretty much like that all the time. In fact, now that I mention it, both Maiden guitarists are like that. Not a lot of demonic face activity going on with either one of these guys at all. Not criticizing these guys here - my God, are you kidding? - just making an observation.

This is really a great video, but it's also a great song to listen to with your eyes closed while you just let your imagination go wherever it wants to go. Try it out sometime.

Can you believe anyone would have the nerve to make their musical instruments make those kinds of noises? Well, you haven't heard or seen anything yet. Now check out these out of control Finnish bluegrass guys doing their version of the same song....

You guys are probably wondering what the maniacs look like who were making all those noises in that last video. I don't know if any of you have ever heard of these guys, but here they are making a bunch of noises in front of thousands of wild, out of control animals...

You are speculating like mad, Kevin. My "time away from here" was completely unplanned, and my mind was filled with mostly terror. It's still not cleared, trust me. And after watching the videos I did get to watch of the ones you posted, it fritzed my brain out again! All that flashing, along with being overly-tired and in here and typing like the wind for too long, did me in. Seriously, I had to shut everything off and down and sit with my eyes closed with ice on my back in a dark room with a sleeping, purring kitty in my lap (because that is so, so calming -- the kitty, not being overly-tired and in too much pain) and hope to God it didn't crash to where I had to "reboot" it like I did the last time. I don't ever want paramedics breaking into my house again. It's a miracle I was able to dial 911 when I did, and I wasn't sure I had made it. Apparently, I did, though, although I couldn't get to the door to unlock it. I probably freaked out the 911 Dispatcher, though, since all I could do by then was make weird noises. That's the wildest thing that has ever happened to me, and I don't ever, ever want a repeat.

The human mind, and the brain, are indeed mysterious, which has been verified by my new Neurologist, but I still know what I do and don't like. We all get to have our own opinions, right? And we get to change our minds, too, about everything.

I'm not reprimanding you, I'm just sayin'...I think I liked the videos and the songs you posted (even though all those videos fritzed me out, and the last one I watched made me CRY!) because maybe I was in the mood for them? I don't know if I watched them again, and I'm not going to risk it after yesterday, if I would still like them. My bet is, though, that I would still like the songs, even your very own "Judas By God Priest" song, "Painkiller." I am ready and willing and mostly able to try a few more, and so I will. I'll also let you know what I think, but if anything starts flashing at me, I'm going to reduce my screen and just listen to the song.

You know I love my music live, right? I love my music live, with visuals. But I'm obviously not as hardcore as you are.

That being said, bring them on! And I'm also happy that we have a bonafide Rockstar joining us!

Ahyuk! I can't believe you just now said "Judas by God Priest", Elle. That rocked with the Priestliest Priestliness! :-)

So you want summore of the Priest Beast, ay? Here's the one they opened up their concert in Dallas with in '86 - a concert my wife and I and a navy pal should have been at but my pal forgot to get the tickets like he said he was going to until it was too late. We could have been among all those screaming maniacs that got filmed! :-(

Anyway, I saw these guys in Biloxi, Mississippi a few years before that, and Rob made his entrance pretty much the same way as he does on this video. It wasn't the same song and the stage set up was not even remotely close to being as elaborate as the one in Dallas, but Rob kind of made the same type of entrance. You could hear him singing but you couldn't see him for a few lines and then he suddenly appeared on some kind of elevated platform.

Anyway, when this thing first came out on CD and video, it really threw me for a loop that they would open up with such a mellow tune, but after I thought about it for a bit, I began to understand the genius concept behind it all.

This one's got a little more juice to it.

In the cities of the world
You know every boy and girl
Goes crazy to the beat of rock and roll
And as the volume's soarin'
All the crowd is roarin'
Let it roll!

Well, we don't care in the least
'Cause our metal is a feast
But there's always someone trying to put it down
So we crank the music louder
And our voices turn to power
With a wall of sound we'll blow 'em all away...

Oh, I know -- I am a Priestess among the Priestiest Priestliness! And you think I don't read everything you say...

Losing your concert ticket, no matter how it happens, is grounds for a full-blown meltdown. I think I mentioned Dead James and what he did with one of my concert tickets, right? He got mad at me (God knows why -- he was fun except when he wasn't) so he gave it away! I missed one of Stevie Ray Vaughan's last concerts, you know, back when I was 10 years old?

And if Dead James hadn't actually died shortly after that, I probably would have strangled him. Not really, though -- I'm nonviolent.

And now they're both dead! Maybe it was fate that made me miss that concert, but I was so mad at the time.

Okay, since you've posted a new "Judas By God Priest All Over God's Front Lawn" video, I'm going to break my self-imposed rule and watch it next, rather than watching these in order so I don't get mixed up.

Don't try to thank me...

Going in!

Whoa, Dude....

What a great video! What a great song "Out In The Cold" is, and they are fantastic live! Not all bands are, but they really rock!

Halford is so chill. What's up with that? And while I am a life-long and self-proclaimed Bass Player Groupie, and I declare their Bass Player "Massively Studly," their drummer is highly-watchable, as well! I had a hard time deciding who to watch, between those three, and I always stay pretty much laser-focused on someone.

And the video itself, while starting off a little too flashy for me right now (in terms of actual flashing lights that my brain can't really deal with at the moment, but hopefully it will snap out of it,) is so crystal clear!

Oh no. I think I may be a Priest fan, and after all these years of saying, so loudly, just how much I don't like them.

You've ruined me, Kevin.

(I've also decided to blow off work today, since I can tell I need to play trivia, watch videos, and take just one more day of doing nothing else. Ruined, I say. Ruined.)

(I'm gonna watch that one again right now!)

Yeah, that's pretty much a perfect song and video. And Halford's voice is still so clear and he can hit alllll the notes. That's almost unheard of at his age -- he must have taken excellent care of those vocal cords.

I rarely watch anyone but the bass player, unless I'm watching Led Zeppelin or Skid Row videos. When Plant and Page are onstage, who has time to glance over at John Paul Jones? I barely notice John Bonham when those two are rocking out, and it's hard to ignore Bonham. Almost impossible.

And forget about Rachel Bolan. I don't like him on a good day. And hello, Sebastian Bach! I can't take my eyes off him.

Okay, when Aerosmith is singing to me, I only watch Steven Tyler, but he also pretty much demands my attention.

But if it's live, and I'm there, I'm watching the bass player, since has alllll the rhythm.

Look at my posts! You've got me practically unable to speak through my fingers!

I forgot to mention how chill that crowd is, too. Do you think they're just blown away completely, or maybe over-stimulated? They're just mostly standing there. No way would I be able to just stand there!
